Deal Reached to Cut Public Health Option

Majority Leader Harry Reid refused to provide any details at a mid-evening news conference where he told reporters a "broad agreement" had been reached between liberals and moderates on the controversial issue.

With it, he said, the end is in sight for passage of the legislation that Congress has labored over for months.

In place of a government-run plan, originally designed as a way of forcing competition on private industry, officials said the Democrats had tentatively settled on a private insurance arrangement to be supervised by the federal agency that oversees the system through which lawmakers purchase coverage. Additionally, the tentative deal calls for Medicare to be opened to uninsured Americans beginning at age 55, a significant expansion of the large government health care program that currently serves the 65-and-over population.

WASHINGTON – The Virginia couple who crashed a presidential dinner met President Barack Obama in the receiving line, the White House said Friday, as a "deeply concerned and embarrassed" Secret Service acknowledged its officers failed to check whether the couple was on the guest list.

A White House official did not make clear whether Michaele and Tareq Salahi shook hands with the president or spoke with him. Guests going through a receiving line usually shake hands with the president.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of an ongoing Secret Service inquiry that could turn into a criminal investigation.

The Secret Service earlier this week had said the president was not in danger because the couple — like others at the dinner — had gone through magnetometers. But in light of their close proximity to the president, no such claim was made Friday.

1965 Dodge Deora Concept

You can only get into this 1965 Dodge Deora Concept through its windshield. Otherwise, it’s a very nice design.

Am I the only one here that had a Deora? Geez, when were you guys born? Deora was one of the most famous designs to come out of the Hot Wheels garage back in the 60’s. Between that and the Twin-Mill there was heaps of excellent designs by Hot Wheels that made it into the considerations of car companies at the time.

The government employed 95% of Nauruans, and lavished free medical care and schooling for its citizens. The adults didn’t really work, either – office hours were flexible and the most popular pastime was drinking beer and driving the 20-minute circuit around the island. For a while, Nauru was a paradise – for a brief moment in 1970s, Nauruans were even amongst the richest people on the planet.

The tough-talking former Marine immediately laid down some new rules. Among them, he forbade the Hispanic workers at the run-down, Southwestern adobe-style hotel from speaking Spanish in his presence (he thought they'd be talking about him), and ordered some to Anglicize their names.

TAOS, N.M. – Larry Whitten marched into this northern New Mexico town in late July on a mission: resurrect a failing hotel.

No more Martin (Mahr-TEEN). It was plain-old Martin. No more Marcos. Now it would be Mark.

The 63-year-old Texan, however, wasn't prepared for what followed.

Former workers, their relatives and some town residents picketed across the street from the hotel.

(Oct. 28) -- When a California elementary school handed out T-shirts to promote a recent fundraising jog-a-thon, the garments featured a cute, motivational slogan: "1-800-EAT-DUST." But as the Orange County Register reported, that number connected callers to an adult chat line.

The T-shirts were distributed at Linda Vista Elementary School in Yorba Linda, Calif., in anticipation of the Oct. 16 event, said the Register. Nobody had thought to dial the number beforehand. Luckily an adult gave the number a spin that morning and discovered the blunder.

The school promptly recalled all the shirts before the end of the day, the Register said. School officials also called parents, just in case one of the salacious items slipped through the net.

"It was an innocent mistake," said Rosemary Gladden, public information officer for Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.

Maine girl with 'mermaid syndrome' dies at 10

PORTLAND, Maine – Shiloh Pepin, a girl who was born with fused legs, a rare condition often called "mermaid syndrome," and gained a wide following on the Internet and national television, has died. She was 10.

Doctors had predicted she would only survive only for days after her birth at the most, but the girl, described by her mother as "a tough little thing," died at Maine Medical Center on Friday afternoon, hospital spokesman John Lamb said. She had been hospitalized in critical condition for nearly a week.

Being born with "mermaid syndrome," also known as sirenomelia, meant that the Kennebunkport girl had only one partially working kidney, no lower colon or genital organs and legs fused from the waist down.
