"It seems women go into the bedroom and expect it will happen quickly, automatically, with orgasm, even be multi-orgasmic, but without spending the time to do so."

"They're busy and stressed and not taking the time for their sexual expression," the professor said.

The online survey questioned more than 400 women about their sex lives and sexual feelings, and found 65 percent had some form of sexual dysfunction.

Half had a diagnosable sexual desire disorder, said McCabe, who oversaw the study by Ph.D student Katie Giles.

McCabe believed anxiety and depression were found to be contributing factors, but stress and poor body image had the biggest influence on sexual interest and response.

The results could help women feel that they are not alone, and that they can seek help, McCabe added.

Man found not guilty over LPG lighter death

A young man accused of killing his friend by flicking a cigarette lighter after huffing LPG gas in a car in Blenheim has been found not guilty of manslaughter.

Thomas Kelson Hillman, 18, died of heat-related internal injuries after an explosion in the car on October 30, 2006.

In the High Court at Blenheim yesterday, a jury took two hours to decide Tristian Ceciel Grant Beckett, 19, was not responsible for Mr Hillman's death.

Beckett had said he never thought his action would cause an explosion.

Should birthday cake at school be allowed as an occasional treat?

Oteha Valley School, at Albany on the North Shore, has told parents that birthday cake brought for students to share is off the menu.

It says the Government's healthy food guidelines, to come into effect in June, are the reason for the ban.

Birthdays can still be celebrated, but shared edible treats will not be allowed for students having the big day at the school from next term.

Wait for facts on Tibet - Peters

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters has come out on the side of China over Tibet and says not enough facts are known to make a judgment over who is to blame for turmoil there.

Speaking at a news conference in Auckland with Australian counterpart Stephen Smith, he discouraged any form of boycott, either of the whole Olympic Games or its opening ceremony.

Mr Peters took a different view from Prime Minister Helen Clark. Last week she told Parliament the Government was concerned over events in Tibet and called for restraint.

Mr Peters said people should not "rush to judgment".

Asked if he felt the exiled Dalai Lama was not an innocent in the affair, Mr Peters refused to say. "He wasn't anywhere near the event personally."

"The idea of boycotting the Olympics is not the Government's position in terms of the opening ceremony," he said.

Dogs and skateboards have already been banished from Masterton's central business district and spitting could be headed the same way.

Masterton District councillor Edwin Perry has suggested the ban be put through as part of this year's annual plan.

Potential punishments had not been discussed but Mr Perry says any ban would mostly be about raising awareness that spitting was not a desirable habit.

Most New Zealanders want the use of mobile phones while driving banned.

A new Research New Zealand (RNZ) poll showed 86 per cent of New Zealanders believed that phoning/texting and driving should be illegal.

The Government has so far rejected an outright ban, and Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven has said cellphone use was a factor in only a small percentage of crashes.

The issue of distraction was the problem.

The now jailed British motorist was texting on her cellphone when she hit and killed a red-light running cyclist. She was sentenced to four years in prison and banned from driving for five years.

This week Robert Stonestreet, who killed an Ashburton couple while driving drunk and texting, was given nine months’ home detention, a two-and-a-half-year driving ban and community service and ordered to pay $10,000 to the couple’s children.

Supermarket chains are split on whether selling fireworks is responsible business.

Yesterday Progressive Enterprises announced that it will stop selling fireworks in its Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown shops.

But today Warehouse spokeswoman Cynthia Church said the Red Shed will not be looking at a ban.

"We're going to carry on selling them," Ms Church said.

One child was unconscious on arrival at the Starship children's hospital after swallowing the beads.

Mr Rushton said the ministry had acted immediately after learning from Australian counterparts of a New South Wales state ban on the award-winning children's craft toy, which consists of hundreds of the beads.

The Solicitor-General will shortly make a decision whether to approve terrorism charges against the Maori, peace and environmental activists arrested last month. Nicky Hager describes how the decision will be made and the factors the Solicitor-General needs to take into account.

More important, the Terrorism Suppression Act is worryingly vague and, since it has never before been used, there is no experience upon which to sensibly decide where it does and does not apply. The problem is that "terrorism" is not a neutral term. It does not even have a clear and agreed meaning. The Terrorism Suppression Act does contain a (contentious) definition of "terrorism", but it gives no clarity because so much of the connotation and meaning of terrorism are not addressed.
