Mozilla Says Firefox 3 Ready For Prime Time

A new version of Mozilla's popular Firefox Web browser is ready for download with improved security and memory use as the tiny company takes a stab at Microsoft Corp's dominant Internet Explorer.

The program's creators told Reuters on Thursday that the privately-held company's trial version of Firefox 3 browser is ready for the masses to use after months of development.

"In many ways it (Firefox 3) is much more stable than anything else out there," Mozilla Corp Vice President of Engineering Mike Schroepfer said in an interview.

Additions boost security and allow users to run Web sites when they are not connected to the Internet. Mozilla also says Firefox 3 uses less computer memory than Firefox 2.

But they said that as they concluded their fourth round of tweaking their software, they determined it was ready for prime time.

Protesters bid to unmask Scientology

The Church of Scientology in New Zealand has laid a complaint with police after allegedly receiving death and bomb threats from an internet-based protest group that has waged an online war against the religion.

The group, calling itself Anonymous, held a worldwide action day yesterday, with about 20 people gathering at Britomart in downtown Auckland and in other centres, handing out fliers attacking Scientology as a dangerous cult "that scams members with pseudo science".

The project was started in response to the Church of Scientology's attempts in January to remove a YouTube video featuring actor Tom Cruise.

New Zealand activists have for the past two weeks been posting messages on an anti-Scientology site, Enturbulation.org, discussing ways of exposing the local church's involvement in a controversial drug rehabilitation programme called Narconon.

During the routine, Carmit Bachar, who has since left the group, exposed a breast while Ashley Roberts was accused of revealing her private parts after her tiny pair of shorts left little to the imagination.

Promoters Absolute Entertainment were fined for allowing their act to perform "sexually suggestive" routines in the strict Muslim country.

He added: "I believe the way the Pussycat Dolls behaved on stage amounted to gross indecency,"

Under the country's Muslim laws, a female performer must be covered from her shoulders to her knees.

NAPLES - Ballot stuffing took on a new meaning in Italy's parliamentary election yesterday when a man ate his ballot paper in protest at the country's politicians.

Police in Naples said they had charged the 41-year-old businessman with destroying election materials. He said all Italian politicians and politics "are crap" and that he was protesting "against the system".

March 21, 2008 (Computerworld) The approaching death of Windows XP may upset you, but it shouldn't come as a surprise. Microsoft Corp.'s product life-cycle guidelines have foretold the fate of XP since 2001. In fact, Microsoft has been killing off one version of a product as it is replaced with another for years now. But this time around, the approaching demise of XP is getting more attention than, say, the final passing of Windows 2000.

This incipient consumer rebellion is a relatively new phenomenon, even in the short history of PCs. For most of the '90s, Microsoft couldn't bring out new products fast enough to satisfy customers. Computing technology was exploding, and Windows exploded along with it, from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 to Windows 98 to Windows 98 Second Edition to Windows Millennium Edition. PC sales boomed and Windows users raced to upgrade to the latest version.

Green tea may shield brain from sleep apnea effects

Researchers found that when they added green tea antioxidants to rats' drinking water, it appeared to protect the animals' brains during bouts of oxygen deprivation designed to mimic the effects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The findings suggest that green tea compounds should be further studied as a potential OSA therapy, the researchers report in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

OSA is a common disorder in which soft tissues in the throat temporarily collapse and block the airway during sleep, causing repeated stops and starts in breathing throughout the night.

The immediate symptoms include chronic loud snoring and gasping, as well as daytime sleepiness. Left untreated, OSA can eventually have widespread effects in the body; it's linked to high blood pressure, and research suggests that the intermittent dips in oxygen to the brain may lead to memory and learning difficulties.

Bangladesh army feeds troops potatoes

More than half a million Bangladeshi troops have been ordered to eat potatoes in an attempt to ease the impact of surging rice and wheat prices.

Potatoes are not traditionally on the menu for Bangladesh's 140 million people but army chief General Moeen U. Ahmed and the country's army-backed interim government has ordered a change in diet because the tubers are now cheaper and more abundant.

World prices of rice, wheat, edible oil and pulses have almost doubled over the last year, increases that poorer Asian countries can ill afford.

Bangladesh was hit last year by two severe floods and a cyclone that destroyed around 3 million tonnes of food grains, raising fears of a possible famine.

"The daily food menu now includes 125 grams of potato for each soldier irrespective of ranks," government agriculture adviser Choudhury Sajjad Karim quoted the army chief as saying on Thursday.

LOS ANGELES - The urge to smoke is contagious, but quitting apparently is, too. A team of researchers who showed that obesity can spread person-to-person has found a similar pattern with smoking cessation: A smoker is more likely to kick the habit if a spouse, friend, co-worker or sibling did.

What's more, smokers tend to quit in groups and those who don't stop puffing increasingly find themselves pushed to the edge of their social circles, the researchers found.

"Your smoking behavior depends upon not just the smoking behavior of the people you know, but also the people who they know" and so on, said Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a medical sociologist at Harvard Medical School and lead author of the new report.

"We ventured down through the smoke and fire and rubble. We came across the military arresting four Tibetan women. We were screamed at and hid behind a burning vehicle. Then they started shooting in our direction with live ammunition. We ran for our lives up," he said by telephone.

Ward said he saw at least one dead person being carried by Tibetans, describing a man in his 20s who had been shot at least three times.

If Vista “gets a long enough life cycle, it will not be remembered like Millennium Edition,” he said.

That life cycle is looking somewhat shorter than XP’s. Microsoft Corp. chairman Bill Gates said recently that the new version of Windows’ operating software, code-named Windows 7, will be released “sometime in the next year or so.”

In the meantime, the company is facing a class-action lawsuit in federal court over the way it advertised computers sold with XP as being capable of running Vista.

Among them, the company said earlier this month it will keep selling a version of XP for use on new, low-cost computers, such as Intel’s Classmate PC, through at least June 2010. Such computers are designed mainly for word processing, e-mail and Web surfing.

"But what they said is not true. They were attempting to mislead the world's opinion," he said. "The facts shouldn't be distorted."

Catholic Church stops drugstore from selling condoms

The Catholic Church has come under fire in a German town for preventing the sale of condoms in a drugstore whose premises are leased from the Church.

Pharmacy Schlecker has thousands of branches across Germany but a report this week that one shop in Fulda could not sell condoms has led to protests in the western town and sparked accusations the Church has failed to move with the times.

"It's like the Middle Ages. I don't know if this attitude is beneficial to the Church," Marlene Sormani, a local Schlecker manager, was quoted as saying by German radio.

The Church responded by saying it could not preach against using contraceptives and then allow their sale on its property.

"The sexual morality and ethical teachings of the Church are set out in the Catechism and apply to the whole world," he added. "Why should that be any different locally just because it doesn't tally with. . . public attitudes to these things?"
