Chicken soup also good for souls of pandas

Everyone needs some chicken soup for the soul - even pandas.

The Wuhan Zoo in central China has been feeding its two pandas home-cooked chicken soup twice in a month to reduce stress and give them a nutritional boost, a zoo official said Friday.

He Zhihua said 3-year-old Xiwang and Weiwei - literally meaning "Hope" and "Greatness" - were tired and suffering from a little shock since the start Tuesday of the week-long National Day holiday, one of the biggest travel seasons of the year.

The pandas were served 1kg of soup in giant dishes, in addition to their regular diet of bamboo, milk and buns, He said. It was a hit.

"They drank it all like they drank their milk. They loved it," he said.

Pandas' diets usually consist mostly of bamboo, but they also can eat meat and He said in the wild they sometimes catch insects and small birds.

Powderly: None of them worked. We did nothing. We were arrested and detained in China...for doing nothing except for thinking about it.

While being detained, Powderly snapped this shot of a dozing interrogator.

They told some of my collaborators they were gonna shoot us. They really didn't know what we were doing or who we were...At about the 26th hour, they gave up. So they filed us all in vans...and started driving us way on the outskirts of town... Before long we see this ominous spectre of a giant building surrounded by barbed wire. That was Chongwen detention center.

They stripped us and took photos of us naked. They put us in little red shorts and red shirts, prison clothes, and marched us into general population prison cells...At that point we were in a position no or very few Americans had been before.

LOS ANGELES - The urge to smoke is contagious, but quitting apparently is, too. A team of researchers who showed that obesity can spread person-to-person has found a similar pattern with smoking cessation: A smoker is more likely to kick the habit if a spouse, friend, co-worker or sibling did.

Turkish students light up in Istanbul in January 2008. A law banning smoking in public places has come into effect in Turkey -- a country where nearly two-thirds of men smoke. [Agencies]

What's more, smokers tend to quit in groups and those who don't stop puffing increasingly find themselves pushed to the edge of their social circles, the researchers found.

"Your smoking behavior depends upon not just the smoking behavior of the people you know, but also the people who they know" and so on, said Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a medical sociologist at Harvard Medical School and lead author of the new report.

"It seems women go into the bedroom and expect it will happen quickly, automatically, with orgasm, even be multi-orgasmic, but without spending the time to do so."

"They're busy and stressed and not taking the time for their sexual expression," the professor said.

The online survey questioned more than 400 women about their sex lives and sexual feelings, and found 65 percent had some form of sexual dysfunction.

Half had a diagnosable sexual desire disorder, said McCabe, who oversaw the study by Ph.D student Katie Giles.

McCabe believed anxiety and depression were found to be contributing factors, but stress and poor body image had the biggest influence on sexual interest and response.

The results could help women feel that they are not alone, and that they can seek help, McCabe added.

Bangladesh army feeds troops potatoes

More than half a million Bangladeshi troops have been ordered to eat potatoes in an attempt to ease the impact of surging rice and wheat prices.

Potatoes are not traditionally on the menu for Bangladesh's 140 million people but army chief General Moeen U. Ahmed and the country's army-backed interim government has ordered a change in diet because the tubers are now cheaper and more abundant.

World prices of rice, wheat, edible oil and pulses have almost doubled over the last year, increases that poorer Asian countries can ill afford.

Bangladesh was hit last year by two severe floods and a cyclone that destroyed around 3 million tonnes of food grains, raising fears of a possible famine.

"The daily food menu now includes 125 grams of potato for each soldier irrespective of ranks," government agriculture adviser Choudhury Sajjad Karim quoted the army chief as saying on Thursday.

Three Microsoft engineers and three Apple employees are traveling by train to a computer conference. At the station, the three Microsoft engineers each buy tickets and watch as the three Apple employees buy only a single ticket.

"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a Microsoft engineer.

"Watch and you'll see," answers the Apple employee. They all board the train. The Microsoft engineers take their respective seats, but all three Apple employees cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please."

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes the ticket and moves on.

Hackers "open source" Vista

Microsoft reacted swiftly this morning to close down a site distributing the complete source code of its flagship Vista operating system -- but not before dozens of other sites had mirrored the code.

The compressed 4.2GB file called Ballmers_Balls.zip -- apparently in reference to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer -- is, according to one source, "all over the net like a rash."

Analysts familiar with the operating system have declared it to be "obviously genuine."

'Completely starkers' cop nabs would-be thief

An off-duty policeman did not let being naked stop him from nabbing a man from trying to steal his wife's car.

The Balcultha policeman was woken by his wife early in the morning when she heard noises outside their home.

"The officer rolled over and recognised the sound of a starter motor turning over," police magazine Ten One reported.

The officer leapt from bed "completely starkers".

He grabbed a torch and raced outside to grab the offender, who had managed only to roll the car a short distance out of the carport.

The offender bolted with the officer in hot pursuit, the magazine report.

The officer's wife, more suitably attired, came out to help and when the offender ran into her, she grabbed him by the collar.

The policemen arrived moments later and ordered the man to the ground.

"The offender...startled by the sight of a naked constable with just a torch coming towards him, took off."

Promoters Absolute Entertainment were fined for allowing their act to perform "sexually suggestive" routines in the strict Muslim country.

He added: "I believe the way the Pussycat Dolls behaved on stage amounted to gross indecency,"

Under the country's Muslim laws, a female performer must be covered from her shoulders to her knees.

Cyclist videos bike ride to work to highlight cycling dangers

A Christchurch teacher is going all out to educate road-users about the perils of cycling on New Zealand roads.

Cyclist Josh Campbell has grown so frustrated with other road users, he has taken to filming his misadventures to and from work and posted the footage on YouTube for the world to see.

“You're always telling people friends, family that you almost died on the way to work,” Mr Campbell said. “They have no idea, they don't believe you.”

The footage shows cars cutting him off and performing u-turns in front of him. One car even pulls out across an intersection while towing another vehicle behind - it misses him by just centimetres.

“I know they're not trying to kill me,” Mr Campbell commented. “It just seems to be the way it's working out.”

Mozilla Says Firefox 3 Ready For Prime Time

A new version of Mozilla's popular Firefox Web browser is ready for download with improved security and memory use as the tiny company takes a stab at Microsoft Corp's dominant Internet Explorer.

The program's creators told Reuters on Thursday that the privately-held company's trial version of Firefox 3 browser is ready for the masses to use after months of development.

"In many ways it (Firefox 3) is much more stable than anything else out there," Mozilla Corp Vice President of Engineering Mike Schroepfer said in an interview.

Additions boost security and allow users to run Web sites when they are not connected to the Internet. Mozilla also says Firefox 3 uses less computer memory than Firefox 2.

But they said that as they concluded their fourth round of tweaking their software, they determined it was ready for prime time.

March 21, 2008 (Computerworld) The approaching death of Windows XP may upset you, but it shouldn't come as a surprise. Microsoft Corp.'s product life-cycle guidelines have foretold the fate of XP since 2001. In fact, Microsoft has been killing off one version of a product as it is replaced with another for years now. But this time around, the approaching demise of XP is getting more attention than, say, the final passing of Windows 2000.

This incipient consumer rebellion is a relatively new phenomenon, even in the short history of PCs. For most of the '90s, Microsoft couldn't bring out new products fast enough to satisfy customers. Computing technology was exploding, and Windows exploded along with it, from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 to Windows 98 to Windows 98 Second Edition to Windows Millennium Edition. PC sales boomed and Windows users raced to upgrade to the latest version.
