Users performed the worst on the online dating and credit card categories. Only 40% of quiz takers correctly selected plentyoffish.com rather than cupidjunction.com as the dating site that respects e-mail privacy. Some quiz takers were probably skeptical of plentyoffish.com's free membership. They may have tried to intuit the site's business model, perhaps concluding that the only way the site could make money was to sell customer e-mail addresses. But our inbox of only 1 e-mail per week supports their privacy policy statement that they do not share personal information with third parties.

What’s In A Name: The State of Typo-Squatting 2007

Indianchild.com, a site devoted to Indian children, shares the same address, less an “a”, with indinchild dot com, an adult typo squatter.

This same content is served to americasgirl dot com, a URL remarkably similar to the popular high-end doll home page of americangirl.com.

McAfee has chosen to rate yellow (or “caution”) any site that triggers our typo-squatter criteria. This rating is lower than our red (or “warning”) label.

McAfee could but does not currently re-direct traffic away from typo-squatted domains for users of its SiteAdvisor software.

Microsoft offers a free tool that allows interested individuals to find and analyze squatters.

F-Secure looked at squatters who targeted the security industry.

Man found not guilty over LPG lighter death

A young man accused of killing his friend by flicking a cigarette lighter after huffing LPG gas in a car in Blenheim has been found not guilty of manslaughter.

Thomas Kelson Hillman, 18, died of heat-related internal injuries after an explosion in the car on October 30, 2006.

In the High Court at Blenheim yesterday, a jury took two hours to decide Tristian Ceciel Grant Beckett, 19, was not responsible for Mr Hillman's death.

Beckett had said he never thought his action would cause an explosion.

Email finding helps no one: Brash

Yesterday NZ First leader Winston Peters - who also had copies of emails - said the leak was from inside Dr Brash's office.

"I know that. So does Dr Brash. Going to the police and laying a complaint was an absolute fraud and a feint, he knew who the person was."

Dr Brash said Mr Peters' claims were "unadulterated crap".

Dr Brash said the finding helped nobody and was a warning for all MPs.

"I think when the Leader of the Opposition has computer emails stolen on a very large scale, no one in Parliament can feel secure. [The police] strongly implied the offence was by someone within Parliament. That means the culprits are either MPs' parliamentary staff, or Parliament's computer staff. As long as they don't find a culprit everyone is under suspicion."

"I believe the National Party used the allegations of theft, and thereby wasted police resources, to try to distract attention away from the serious revelations in the book."

Sex billboard ruled to be offensive

In a decision released yesterday, the Advertising Standards Authority upheld 38 complaints received about the billboard for the Advanced Medical Institute.

Complainants said the billboard was near two schools and there was a high likelihood it would be seen by children. They said it was not clear what the actual product was and the dominant message was sex.

Upholding the complaints, the authority acknowledged that premature ejaculation affected about 30 per cent of men. But it said it was conscious of the public concern at using billboards to advertise matters relating to personal health problems.

It said the combination of the wording, large type size, bold colours and overall size of the billboards promoting a product for adult men to assist with a personal health problem was likely to cause widespread offence.

This was particularly so as it was visible to a very wide audience, including children.

Thrilled by the potential the free trade agreement with China brings, potato chip-maker Steven Wong is spending $2.8 million on new machinery to double his factory's production.

But the chief executive of Fresher Foods is now faced with a new problem - New Zealand does not have enough potatoes to meet China's demands.

Mr Wong, 60, who was in Beijing as part of the delegation accompanying Prime Minister Helen Clark, said the new machinery at his East Tamaki chip factory to be installed this month would double weekly production to 800 tonnes.

"The lowest price I can offer for the chips at the moment is still about 5c above what the Americans and Europeans charge, but all that will change when the tariffs are eliminated," Mr Wong said. "Who knows what the demand will be like then."

"China wants 25 tonnes of potato chips from us every week, but we can only supply them with that quantity in a month."

Hackers are bypassing codes, passwords and security systems to ring up massive phone bills for unlucky Aussies.

A Melbourne retailer and university were last week hit with collective phone bills of more than A$100,000 ($118,990) of overseas calls with police still gathering evidence of more victims.

Both parties are angry with Telstra which, they say, is insisting they pay the bills.

A Swinburne University spokeswoman said it knew nothing about the scam until it was hit by an A$80,000 bill.

Police sources have said the scam is carried out by overseas-based manufacturers of phone cards commonly used by students to make cheap overseas phone calls.

"That's how they (phone card sellers) get cheap rates for their customers, through illegally tapping phone lines."

The hackers bypass codes, passwords and other security systems as computers run through various combinations in milliseconds until they find the right one, Mr Koh said.
