Train hits man peeing on track

A man was critically injured last night when a train hit him while he was urinating on the track at Penrose station.

Police said the man, who was very drunk, suffered pelvic, leg and back injuries and was in Auckland City Hospital.

"It's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen," said Senior Sergeant Junior Abraham.

"I can think of better places to relieve myself."

A witness said the man tried three times to get back on to the platform when he saw the train coming but could not make it.

"We should not violate the principle that the Japanese police will firmly maintain security," Kyodo news agency quoted Shinya Izumi, head of the National Public Safety Commission, as saying.

Chinese state media have reported that the "flame protection squad", consisting of some 70 members of China's People's Armed Police, has been employed by the Beijing Olympic Organising Committee to safeguard the fire for 24 hours a day.

But the squad's heavy-handed approach in managing the torch relay, which has been a magnet for chaotic demonstrations in London, Paris, and San Francisco over China's human rights record and recent government crackdown on monk-led protests in Tibet, has made some uncomfortable.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has said that Australia, not China, would be the one to provide security for the flame.

Agent's insult earns top fine - $750

An LJ Hooker real estate agent told a seller she was so difficult her husband deserved a medal for living with her.

The Auckland couple listed a property with Good Real Estate, a member of the LJ Hooker Group, and the wife had been presented with an offer, which she rejected.

In response, the agent telephoned her and made the accusation. She lodged a complaint with the institute.

People can lodge complaints with the institute if agents have breached its code of ethics or rules of practice which stipulate how agents must behave.

The agent gave the tenant seven days' notice to quit and pay the rent, failing to give written notice, abide by the terms of the Residential Tenancies Act or to apply to the Tenancy Tribunal for an eviction notice.

The firm was ordered to pay $750 for breaking one rule, $750 for breaking another rule, $400 costs and $50 GST.

China Says U.S. House Tibet Resolution Is `Rude Interference'

``China is strongly indignant and opposed to this resolution,'' the official Xinhua News Agency cited Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu as saying in a statement today. The resolution, sponsored by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, ``flagrantly distorted the history and reality of Tibet.''

The House called on China to ``enter into a substantive dialogue'' with the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, on the future of the Himalayan territory.

President George W. Bush is among world leaders calling on China to open talks with the Dalai Lama.

`Internal Affairs'

``Tibetan affairs are purely China's internal affairs and none of the foreign governments or groups have the right to interfere,'' Jiang said in Beijing yesterday.

Protesters have used the global relay of the Beijing Olympic Games torch to highlight demands for Tibet's independence and for China to improve human rights.

The Dalai Lama said in Japan he supports China's right to host the Games.
