The Powerhouse Museum is creating Australia's first public email archive to preserve present-day communications for future generations.

The museum, together with ninemsn, which runs Hotmail in Australia, is asking the Australian public to submit emails - from the heart-wrenching to the hilarious - in an effort to capture a snapshot of contemporary life.

"[With electronic communications] the media is unstable, the machines become obsolete and the data formats become obsolete," Mr Connell said.

"With paper, as long as you can keep it intact it will probably be readable in 100, 200 years down the track, but with a 3.5-inch floppy disk you'd be lucky to find someone with a drive that can read it now."

The irony of archiving electronic mail on paper is not lost on Mr Connell.

"We imagine that computers solve all our problems - and who would give up email - but it's funny having to go backwards in order to be certain that we can preserve these things."

Finnish minister sacked for texts to erotic dancer

Finland's foreign minister has been sacked after newspapers and magazines published suggestive text messages he sent to an erotic dancer, his party said.

Ilkka Kanerva sent about 200 text messages to Johanna Tukiainen, 29-year-old leader of the Scandinavian Dolls erotic dance troupe. At first he said they were related to her performing at his 60th birthday party.

A government spokeswoman said Stubb would be confirmed in the job by Finland's president on Friday.

"This has been the toughest decision as the leader of the party. Ilkka is my friend and he has done his job as foreign minister brilliantly," party head Jyrki Katainen said, adding that Kanerva had acted thoughtlessly in his private life.

In messages Kanerva had asked Tukiainen, who has posed nude in magazines: "Would you like to do it in an exotic place? Where could it be?"

Big crowd shears in Te Kuiti sheep run

MOB HITS TOWN: Te Kuit's main street was awash with wool as the annual New Zealand Shears Running of the Sheep event wove its way through town.

It was a ewe-ge event 1899 sheep pounding the tarmac through Te Kuiti's main street on Saturday.

The event, the largest of its kind in the world, has been held for the past five years in the town and is based on Spain's running of the bulls in Pamplona.

Co-ordinator Debie Glover said apart from a few escapes across the railway track and some animals getting stuck between cars, the event was a big success.

She said for the first time they had built a bridge for the sheep to run across, which made an impressive sight.

The sheep run is the brainchild of King Country farmer John Fagan and was started to coincide with the New Zealand Shearing Championships and the Great New Zealand Muster in the self-proclaimed shearing capital of the world.

'Labour mates' breaching law - English

Mr English has tabled an amendment to the Electoral Finance Act that would mean election adverts would not have to carry the home addresses of party officials.

Under the Electoral Finance Act, any political party or third party which wanted to advertise during the election campaign needed to list the name of a party official and their home address on the adverts.

Mr English said recently that anyone who saw the adverts would be able to track down the party official named on it at their home address "and do some of the crazy things all sorts of people do these days".

Mr English said Green Party billboards put up around Wellington two weeks ago contained "an illegal authorisation statement that is written sideways and in such tiny type that it cannot be read from the road".

Large billboards put up by NZ First in Tauranga contained no authorisation statement at all, he said.

Cullen backs China's refusal of visa

Deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen yesterday compared China's refusal of a visa for Capital Chinese News editor and political activist Nick Wang to the Government's 2004 denial of entry to British historian David Irving, a convicted Holocaust denier.

Wang had sought a visa to cover Prime Minister Helen Clark's China visit for the signing of the New Zealand-China free-trade agreement.

The deal, to be signed on Monday, comes amid international concern over China's bloody crackdown in Tibet.

Wang is a New Zealand citizen and outspoken critic of Beijing's human rights record. He has campaigned against closer ties between New Zealand city councils and their Chinese counterparts.

Despite being a member of the press gallery covering Parliament, he was evicted in April last year by police from a photo opportunity with visiting Chinese Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan.
