Double speak and New Speak seem to have come to reality and with domestic spying *blinks* well G. Orwell would find his novel parallels frightening.

What next? The constitution is not being followed, international law broken, treaties trounced, what next -- oh yea Iran.

Clip Source: www.motherjones.com

Having been subjected to them all, I know these techniques, if in fact they are actually being used, are not dangerous when applied in training for short periods. However, when performed with even moderate intensity over an extended time on an unsuspecting prisoner – it is torture, without doubt. Couple that with waterboarding and the entire medley not only “shock the conscience” as the statute forbids -it would terrify you. Most people can not stand to watch a high intensity kinetic interrogation. One has to overcome basic human decency to endure watching or causing the effects. The brutality would force you into a personal moral dilemma between humanity and hatred. It would leave you to question the meaning of what it is to be an American....

Tags: waterboarding, politics, political, torture, bush, chaney

<clipSource>http://www.motherjones.com/mojoblog/archives/2007/10/6001_waterboarding_i.html</clipSource>

Doctors use vodka drip to save dying man

clipped by: Deepti

Clip Source: www.hindustantimes.com

Australian doctors in a far-north Queensland hospital saved the life of an Italian tourist by putting him on a drip-feed of vodka to flush out the poison he had drunk in a suicide attempt, local media reported Wednesday

"The patient was drip-fed about three standard drinks an hour for three days in the intensive care unit," physician Todd Fraser said Tuesday.

In secret trials last week, the Army said it had made a vehicle completely disappear and predicted that an invisible tank would be ready for service by 2012.

The new technology uses cameras and projectors to beam images of the surrounding landscape onto a tank.

Tags: invisible, tanks

<clipSource>http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=490669&in_page_id=1770</clipSource>

Should news sites be free?

clipped by: Brett Nelson
clipper's remarks: More food for thought in a world of splintering media.

Clip Source: www.slate.com

Why You Didn't Pay To Read ThisShould newspaper Web sites really be free?

The New York Times' retreat from a subscription model is widely portrayed by online commentators as a humiliating and belated acceptance of the inevitable. But Matthew Gentzkow, an economist at the University of Chicago, recently published research that suggests that there has been no expensive mistake. Both the subscription model then and the advertising model now were likely to have been reasonable choices. Free online access makes more sense now not because of some fundamental law of online economics, but because the online advertising market has matured.

Tags: newspapers, internet, economics

<clipSource>http://www.slate.com/id/2176626/fr/flyout</clipSource>

Great tips for optimizing your computer

clipped by: kennedyhouse
clipper's remarks: a fantastic collection of tips and tricks. Most times it will be a losing proposition.

Clip Source: www.joelonsoftware.com

Well, yes. They did. They did it by making the single worst strategic mistake that any software company can make:

They decided to rewrite the code from scratch.

There's a subtle reason that programmers always want to throw away the code and start over. The reason is that they think the old code is a mess. And here is the interesting observation: they are probably wrong. The reason that they think the old code is a mess is because of a cardinal, fundamental law of programming:

It's harder to read code than to write it.

It's important to remember that when you start from scratch there is absolutely no reason to believe that you are going to do a better job than you did the first time. First of all, you probably don't even have the same programming team that worked on version one, so you don't actually have "more experience". You're just going to make most of the old mistakes again, and introduce some new problems that weren't in the original version.

Tags: software development

<clipSource>http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html</clipSource>
