How much will Microsoft’s Sandcastle boo-boo hurt?

Microsoft admits it goofed. Posting a project under an open source license without including the code is bad form.

The question is how much this might hurt Microsot. In the open source community it’s already as popular as George W. Bush at an Obama rally. How much worse can things get?

There remain a large cohort of programmers, partners, and simple fans who will stay with Microsoft and what it chooses to call open source no matter what. You might think of it as the Republican Party of open source.

But, sheesh. This went over like John McCain’s green screen speech. So maybe Microsoft needs to believe as Sen. McCain does, that there will be better days.

Will there? Can Microsoft mend its open source fences?

It won't surprise you to know that Office 2007 failed miserably. If you go by the strict OOXML schema, you get a 17 MiB file containing approximately 122,000 errors, and 'somewhat less' with the transitional OOXML schema. Most of the problems reportedly relate to the serialization/deserialization code. How many other fast-tracked ISO standards have no conforming implementations?"

Indianchild.com, a site devoted to Indian children, shares the same address, less an “a”, with indinchild dot com, an adult typo squatter.

This same content is served to americasgirl dot com, a URL remarkably similar to the popular high-end doll home page of americangirl.com.

McAfee has chosen to rate yellow (or “caution”) any site that triggers our typo-squatter criteria. This rating is lower than our red (or “warning”) label.

Microsoft offers a free tool that allows interested individuals to find and analyze squatters.

F-Secure looked at squatters who targeted the security industry.

Hewlett-Packard's new "Mini-Note" weighs less than 3 pounds with a screen that measures 8.9 inches diagonally. HP's Christine Wright holds a new class of the miniature laptop here.

SAN FRANCISCO - One more of the world's biggest technology companies is clamoring to enter the growing market for pint-sized computers targeted mainly for pint-sized customers.

The machines are so new the industry hasn't settled on a name for low-cost and scaled-down laptops used primarily for surfing the Internet and performing other basic functions like word processing.

Intel has labeled them "netbooks," and it expects more than 50 million netbooks to be in circulation by 2011.

Apple vs. Microsoft

Three Microsoft engineers and three Apple employees are traveling by train to a computer conference. At the station, the three Microsoft engineers each buy tickets and watch as the three Apple employees buy only a single ticket.

"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a Microsoft engineer.

"Watch and you'll see," answers the Apple employee. They all board the train. The Microsoft engineers take their respective seats, but all three Apple employees cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please."

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes the ticket and moves on.

Akill pleads guilty to all charges

Whitianga teen to be sentenced on May 28

Owen Walker, the 18-year-old Whitianga resident also known as Akill, has pleaded guilty to all charges he was facing under the Crimes Act for his part in attacking the University of Pennsylvania’s computer system and in a global adware scheme.

Walker pleaded guilty in the Thames District Court this morning to accessing a computer system with the intention of dishonestly obtaining payment for the installation of adware, accessing a computer system without authorisation, and several other charges related to his role in the attacks.

The pre-sentence report would cover home detention, community detention and community work, said Judge Arthur Tompkins.

If reparation is ordered, Walker's share would be around $8,000, says the documents.

Mini-Y2K fears over daylight saving change

The decision to extend daylight saving in south-eastern Australia could create a mini-Y2K by putting the internal clocks on computers, smartphones and corporate servers out of sync.

From this year on, daylight saving in NSW, Victoria, ACT, Tasmania and South Australia will end a week later than usual on the first Sunday in April and, with the exception of Tasmania, recommence three weeks earlier on the first Sunday in October.

The change was intended to harmonise daylight saving dates across the country and give Australians more daylight hours, which in turn benefits the environment by reducing evening electricity use.

Clocks must therefore be adjusted manually or via software updates from the device makers.

Microsoft has issued an advisory to users of its Windows, Outlook and Windows Mobile products recommending they download an update from microsoft.com.au that will synchronise computer clocks with the daylight saving changes.

A company claims it has cracked the anti-piracy technology on Blu-ray discs.

Slysoft says the new version of its AnyDVD programme allows users to make "backup security copies" of high definition movies.

The claim is a blow to Sony which developed the Blu-ray format.

The discs are protected by an anti-piracy system called BD+.

When it launched in 2007, developers boasted it would not be cracked for 10 years.

SlySoft says it hacked the BD+ technology in November.

It decided to wait for the result of the "format war" between Blu-ray and HD DVD before releasing a full product.

BD+ is designed to react to attempts on its technology.

Its developers say they can re-lock copied discs, making them unusable in the future.

SlySoft reckons it is prepared for this.
