Midnight, is, according to ancient lore, the witching hour. It's when ghouls, ghosts and computer viruses are at their most potent; a time of ill feelings and odd superstitions. And, as it transpires, if you were a Telstra employee working a bit of overtime last Monday, also the time you may have found your screen going black.

No warding of ghoulies or goblins here, however -- it's part of a company initiative to go green, by eliminating a standardised Telstra screensaver -- replete with company-affirming messages -- and replacing it with a black screen.

SAN FRANCISCO - One more of the world's biggest technology companies is clamoring to enter the growing market for pint-sized computers targeted mainly for pint-sized customers.

The machines are so new the industry hasn't settled on a name for low-cost and scaled-down laptops used primarily for surfing the Internet and performing other basic functions like word processing.

Intel has labeled them "netbooks," and it expects more than 50 million netbooks to be in circulation by 2011.

Three Microsoft engineers and three Apple employees are traveling by train to a computer conference. At the station, the three Microsoft engineers each buy tickets and watch as the three Apple employees buy only a single ticket.

"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a Microsoft engineer.

"Watch and you'll see," answers the Apple employee. They all board the train. The Microsoft engineers take their respective seats, but all three Apple employees cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please."

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes the ticket and moves on.

They find themselves having to live with a looser interpretation of how their content is used, or "sampled" even, especially in the face of a shifting public perception about what is OK to use fairly and what should be paid for, or licensed, in the intellectual property realm.

But, as Google spokesperson Ricardo Reyes noted, the DMCA is the "millennium," not "decade," copyright act. Having said that, YouTube abides by the DMCA by honoring any request to remove content, he added.

But, he said, Google cannot police the content before it's posted. "The user-generated [material] is still the most popular."

Microsoft and Intel have put their money where their fear is. The two companies have shelled out $10m each to the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Illinois to fund research around advanced software programming techniques for PCs and mobile devices.

Microsoft, in particular, has been viewed as a laggard in the race toward multi-threaded applications. When told by Intel of the shift toward multi-core chips, Bill Gates remarked, "We can't write software to keep up with that." Gates then urged Intel to continue producing faster processors as it had always done. "No, Bill, it's not going to work that way," Intel vice president Pat Gelsinger responded.

Teen charged with e-crime faces jail

Teenage computer whiz Owen Walker faces up to seven years in jail after becoming the first person in New Zealand to be charged with botnet crime.

But it now seems unlikely the Whitianga teenager will be extradited to the United States to face charges.

Using the cyber-id Akill, Walker is alleged to have been part of a small but elite botnet coding group that developed malware which is estimated to have caused more than US$20 million ($24.5 million) of economic loss and involved cyber crimes committed in the United States ranging from vandalism to virtual bank robbery.
