Nanotechnology Windshield Eliminates Wipers in Future Vehicles

The mechanism behind is four intelligent layers that work side by side to accelerate the cleaning process. The first, and also the top layer which made up of titanium dioxide is responsible to repel water to keep the external surface clean. At the same time, the second layer which uses nanotechnology will help to push dirt to the edge with the assistance of sensors embedded in the third layer. Lastly, the fourth layer will ensure sufficient current being delivered to the windscreen for proper operation. Combined with the aerodynamic structure design of the vehicle, it is able to clear away any dust or water on the surface in any kind of bad weather situation.

Although the development is still in very initial stage, it is believed to be productized within 5 years time. So, not to be surprise that you will not be able to find any wiper in future vehicles since it will be redundant.

In the market for a no-frills car under $10,000? Pack your bags. For that price, you've got to travel to emerging automotive markets like India and China.

The Tata Nano is the latest entrant into the cheap-car club. India-based Tata Motors (nyse: TTM - news - people ) says the Nano will roll out later this year. Price tag? About $2,500. The four-door car will be the world's cheapest car, besting India's current cheapest vehicle, the Suzuki Maruti 800, which sells for 195,000 rupees (about $4,994).

The Maruti is the cheapest in India for now ( 195,000 Rupees; $4,994). It costs only slightly more than the Chery QQ, which is produced in China by Chery Automotive and sells there for 34,499 yuan ($4,781). None of these vehicles are available in the United States; they are barred from entry in their current conditions, because, like the Nano, they don't meet U.S. safety and emissions standards.

Striking a good deal for plastic bumpers

A group of 120 State Insurance-approved panelbeaters in Auckland have signed up to a recycling initiative with a focus on plastic car bumpers.

State project development manager Mike Parbery said each year thousands of plastic bumpers damaged in car accidents were dumped in landfills.

"Most repairers would cut them up to fit into their skips."

But in a bid to save the environment and unnecessary dumping costs, Parbery found two Auckland companies that will take the bumpers for clients in China. They're compacted or chipped before being shipped overseas.

Now, for just $5 a load, Jones is able to recycle the waste. It means a $35 saving on dumping costs each month and, more importantly, a saving on the environment.

Hefner's ex back on the market

The 1969 model was purchased through Barrett-Jackson auction house in the United States and the 1971 model through a car dealership in Florida. They had both previously been in private collections.
