When and where will be able to get a CD of Service Pack 3 ?
I find my CD of SP2 indespensable at times.
The window of oppurtunity to procur the Service Pack 2 CD was small ,at least the zero cost window.
I am sure I am not alone in wanting to have the CD version rather than fooling around with downloads onto machines that may not have an internet connection now or ever.

CD images of the update package will be available at Microsoft Download Center on 4/29.

An online ordering tool for the same, similar to what is available for other service packs, will be available within the next month.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing

Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.

Microsoft responds to "Save XP" petition

A spokesperson noted that Microsoft had already delayed XP's demise by six months from its original Dec. 31, 2007, end-of-sales date, as software vendors, customers, and others complained that the deadline was too soon, coming less than a year after Windows Vista's release. "That's what informed our decision to extend the availability of XP initially and what will continue to guide us," another spokesperson told Computerworld Australia.

The first spokesperson expressed some surprise at the resistance some users have expressed to adopting Vista, recalling that many users were upset that Vista's original release had been delayed. She also noted that Microsoft has several options for people to install XP on new systems after June 30 and that the company planned on supporting XP for some time after it is no longer available for sale.

March 21, 2008 (Computerworld) The approaching death of Windows XP may upset you, but it shouldn't come as a surprise. Microsoft Corp.'s product life-cycle guidelines have foretold the fate of XP since 2001. In fact, Microsoft has been killing off one version of a product as it is replaced with another for years now. But this time around, the approaching demise of XP is getting more attention than, say, the final passing of Windows 2000.

This incipient consumer rebellion is a relatively new phenomenon, even in the short history of PCs. For most of the '90s, Microsoft couldn't bring out new products fast enough to satisfy customers. Computing technology was exploding, and Windows exploded along with it, from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 to Windows 98 to Windows 98 Second Edition to Windows Millennium Edition. PC sales boomed and Windows users raced to upgrade to the latest version.

Microsoft sounds bug alarm, confirms Windows-Word attacks

March 22, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. yesterday warned of a critical vulnerability that affects users of Word running on Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 SP1 -- several weeks after one security company first reported an exploit and a day after a second vendor confirmed ongoing attacks.

Florio also noted that there are at least two unpatched bugs in Jet that have been exploited by hackers. One of those bugs was reported three years ago.

Although Microsoft downplayed the threat, spokesman Bill Sisk confirmed that a patch was on the way. "We currently have teams working to develop an update of appropriate quality for release in our regularly scheduled bulletin process or as an out-of-band update, depending on customer impact," he said in a post to the Microsoft Security Response Center's blog.

Until a fix is available, Microsoft said users and IT administrators could disable Jet or block .mdb files at the gateway.

Last week, Jane Maliouta, the program manager for IE8 Deployment and Management, gave a clue pointing out that XP SP3 RC2 was the same, or very close to XP SP3 RTM. At the same time, Maliouta made a reference to Windows XP SP3 (RC2 candidate - Build 3311 or higher), without mentioning the build designed to succeed 3311.

But the jump from build 3311 all the way to 5503 means that this leaked release has to be taken with a grain of salt, because it might not be what it claims, and instead provide just a fake variant of an earlier testing build of XP SP3. At the same time, Microsoft appears to no longer be offering XP SP3 via Connect. This could mean that the Redmond company is in fact preparing to deliver the gold bits of XP SP3.
