Windows XP To Windows 7 A Risky Path, Microsoft Warns

Customers that don't deploy Windows Vista are missing out on proven benefits such as better security, productivity, search, mobility, and manageability, says a Microsoft executive.

Symantec chief operating officer Enrique Salem recently told InformationWeek that only a small percentage of the security software company's large business customers have upgraded their corporate PCs to Vista.

"For the most part, we're not seeing it," said Salem, in an interview. Salem said most of Symantec's enterprise customers continue to run their systems on the older Windows XP operating system because "they're not yet comfortable with Vista."

The lukewarm embrace given Vista may be starting to impact Microsoft's bottom line. The company in April revealed that third-quarter sales of Windows licenses plunged 24%, compared with the previous year.

reacted swiftly this morning to close down a site distributing the
complete source code of its flagship Vista operating system -- but not
before dozens of other sites had mirrored the code.

The compressed 4.2GB file called Ballmers_Balls.zip --
apparently in reference to Microsoft CEO Steve
Ballmer -- is, according to one source, "all over the net
like a rash."

Analysts familiar with the operating system have declared it to be
"obviously genuine."

It became clear soon after Vista's release, that there were serious problems when it came to finding compatible software drivers to allow everything to work properly with Vista. For that, Microsoft and its industry partners have a lot to answer for.

Linux, being open source, is much more available for user update. If you don't have a driver, you can make one yourself or have someone make one for you. That is why you can blame the OS because the OS is compiled by people who are not much different than yourself.

Anything Debian-based basks in a huge supportive community. There are thousands of users with different peripherals and different setups. The reason why your stuff works is because someone before you has used the same setup/peripheral.

The only way to get what you want, is to make Windows open source. I'd like to see it but the odds of that happening are slim to none in the near future. I only like my peripherals when they work, so I'll just stick to my Linux box until then.

"I repeat: support for SP1 will NOT cost you anything -- as long as you choose the correct option for support."

It looks like more and more people are turning off (based on advice from websites) for easier friction free use.

By the way, notice that even Microsoft execs can't remember the proper name of this feature -- it's user account control, not user access control.

<clipSource>http://blogs.computerworld.com/microsoft_exec_we_know_users_hate_uac</clipSource>

Vista junk PC you may be in luck

clipped by: hotdoge3
clipper's remarks: Vista junk get back

Clip Source: blogs.computerworld.com

Bought a Vista-Capable 'junk' PC? An unnamed employee wrote in an email, for example, "Even a piece of junk will qualify" to be called Windows Vista Capable. And Mike Nash, now a corporate vice president for Windows product management, wrote in an email message, "I PERSONALLY got burnt...Are we seeing this from a lot of customers?...I now have a $2,100 e-mail machine."

details.

If you were one of those stuck with a $2,100 e-mail machine, or a "piece of junk" it may be your chance to finally get back some of the cash you forked over.

If you're looking to be involved in the lawsuit, check out this blog entry for details.

<clipSource>http://blogs.computerworld.com/bought_a_vista_capable_junk_pc_you_may_be_in_luck</clipSource>

Vista lowered requirement to help Intel

clipped by: hotdoge3
clipper's remarks: mistake ?

Clip Source: blogs.computerworld.com

Was Intel behind the Vista 'junk PC' scheme?

In the end, we lowered the requirement to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 graphics embedded. This in turn did two things: 1. Decreased focus of OEMs planning and shipping higher end graphics for Vista-ready programs and 2. Reduced the focus by IHV's to ready great WHQL [Windows Hardware Quality Labs] qualified graphics drivers. We can see this today with Intel's inability to ship a compelling full featured 945 graphics driver for Windows Vista.

Later on in the email. Kalkman admits the Vista Capable scheme was a mistake:

...it was a mistake on our part to change the original graphics requirements. This created confusion in the industry on how important the visual aspects of visual computing would play as a feature set to new Windows Vista upgraders.

<clipSource>http://blogs.computerworld.com/was_intel_behind_the_vista_junk_pc_scheme</clipSource>

Microsoft & Intel

clipped by: hotdoge3
clipper's remarks: What did Intel give Microcoft ?

Clip Source: blogs.computerworld.com

1. What did Intel give Microsoft in return for Microsoft launching the ill-fated Vista Capable scheme?

As I've written in a previous blog, Microsoft launched its Vista Capable plan to help Intel sell its aging 915 chipset, and to help Intel meet quarterly earnings. That's going out on a very big limb, and helped give Vista a bad name. So Microsoft must have gotten something very significant in return. What, exactly did Intel do, or promise to do, for Microsoft?

2. Is Vista Home Basic really Windows Vista?

After reading the emails, you can easily make the argument that Vista Home Basic isn't even Vista at all. After all, it doesn't include one of the most important pieces of the operating system, Aero. In fact, in an August 10, 2005 email Microsoft Director Rajesh Srinivasan refers to Vista Home Basic as "Windows 2006," a clear indication that Microsoft execs knew that it wasn't truly Vista. So why did they bother to create it, considering that no one wants it?

<clipSource>http://blogs.computerworld.com/five_unanswered_questions_in_the_vista_junk_pc_lawsuit</clipSource>
