Striking a good deal for plastic bumpers

A group of 120 State Insurance-approved panelbeaters in Auckland have signed up to a recycling initiative with a focus on plastic car bumpers.

State project development manager Mike Parbery said each year thousands of plastic bumpers damaged in car accidents were dumped in landfills.

"Most repairers would cut them up to fit into their skips."

But in a bid to save the environment and unnecessary dumping costs, Parbery found two Auckland companies that will take the bumpers for clients in China. They're compacted or chipped before being shipped overseas.

Now, for just $5 a load, Jones is able to recycle the waste. It means a $35 saving on dumping costs each month and, more importantly, a saving on the environment.

He is thought to be the ringleader of an international botnet group called A-Team, and has been named as a co-conspirator in a large-scale cyber attack in the United States.

Further suspects were spoken to in Northland and Canterbury, but Waikato Crime Services Manager, Detective Inspector Peter Devoy says it appears that those were victims rather than co-conspirators.

AKILL is alleged to have been one of those behind a concentrated DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack at a Philadelphia university in February last year.

The 17-year-old John McGlashan College student last night became the Guinness Book of Records newest world champion - for texting blindfolded.

Elliott twice broke the previous record texting a 160 character message blindfolded in 51 seconds and then 45 seconds.

The old record was set by an Italian at 1 minute 23 seconds.

Green Party Human Rights Spokesperson Keith Locke is calling for the Government to withdraw the Terrorism Suppression Amendment Bill, currently before Parliament, in the light of the forthcoming Law Commission review of the 2002 Terrorism Suppression Act.

"It would be quite wrong to go ahead with the amending bill when the whole Act, which the Solicitor General has called 'incoherent' is to be reviewed by the Law Commission," Mr Locke says.

The beads contain a chemical that when swallowed can produce the banned party drug Fantasy in the body.

One child was unconscious on arrival at the Starship children's hospital after swallowing the beads.

Mr Rushton said the ministry had acted immediately after learning from Australian counterparts of a New South Wales state ban on the award-winning children's craft toy, which consists of hundreds of the beads.

The Solicitor-General will shortly make a decision whether to approve terrorism charges against the Maori, peace and environmental activists arrested last month. Nicky Hager describes how the decision will be made and the factors the Solicitor-General needs to take into account.

More important, the Terrorism Suppression Act is worryingly vague and, since it has never before been used, there is no experience upon which to sensibly decide where it does and does not apply. The problem is that "terrorism" is not a neutral term. It does not even have a clear and agreed meaning. The Terrorism Suppression Act does contain a (contentious) definition of "terrorism", but it gives no clarity because so much of the connotation and meaning of terrorism are not addressed.

Canada Pension Plan making fresh bid for New Zealand airport stake

The Canadian pension fund said in a statement it would make an all-cash partial takeover offer of NZ$3.6555 a share direct to shareholders in New Zealand's main international airport.

The Dubai company's 2.6 billion New Zealand (US$1.8 billion; €1.3 billion) cash-and-stapled-securities bid for up to 60 percent of the airport operator faced stiff opposition from central and local government officials concerned about a significant national infrastructure asset going into foreign control.
