Boulder High students walk out during Pledge, recite own version

BOULDER, Colo.—About 50 Boulder High School students walked out of class Thursday to protest the daily reading of the Pledge of Allegiance and recited their own version, omitting "one nation, under God."

The students say the phrase violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

"Boulder High has a highly diverse population, not all of whom believe in God, or one God," said Emma Martens, a senior and president of the club, which has about a dozen members.

A glass or two of wine can boost our ability to remember, according to a new study.

With Dr Maggie Kalev he studied the effects on memory of moderate levels of alcohol consumption, equivalent to a glass or two of wine a day, and found they can enhance memory

said Prof During. "It is like the best way to build strength in a muscle is to challenge the muscle. But you have to get it just right."

Dr Kalev added that low levels of alcohol "promoted neutral memories, such as remembering objects."

Their research has been published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

The findings rubbished the notion of drinking to forget, as they also show drinking enough to exceed the limit for driving means you are more likely to remember the embarrassment of a boisterous binge - from making an indecent proposal to dancing without your trousers on.

A Russian woman has given birth to a baby weighing 7.75kg (17.5lbs), more than twice the average newborn weight.

"We were all simply in shock," reports quoted Nadia's mother, Tatyana Barabanova, 43, as saying.

"What did the father say? He couldn't say a thing - he just stood there blinking," she said.

All her previous babies had weighed more than 5kg (11lb), a local reporter was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying.

Among the heaviest babies recorded are a 10.2kg (22.5lb) boy born in Italy in 1955, and a 10.8kg (23.8lb) boy born in the US in 1879 but who died 11 hours later.

We could have seen it coming a hundred years ago if we’d only paid attention. But we were ignorant, arrogant, foolish.

Today every school child — all ninety-seven thousand of them, worldwide — knows the story. Or at least parts of it.

The big picture is that we’re all dying. Every last one of us.

It wasn’t global warming. It wasn’t pollution. It wasn’t genetically modified foods, or cell phones, or microwave ovens. It wasn’t personal computers or the automobile. It wasn’t war and it wasn’t famine and it wasn’t pestilence.

It was all of those things, and more.

Humanity will wither and die. It’s inevitable now.

We turned our minds — those of us who still had the will to use them — to what should happen next.

We started to consider our legacy.

Just four words. Our legacy. Our message to whomever or whatever should return to this place after the last fire has gone out.

DON’T BE LIKE US.
