Through more widespread adoption of copy-protection features and filtering tools like watermarking,

"all manner of intellectual property" can now be reproduced more easily than ever "at the click of the mouse."

the "artists" behind the content are fairly compensated.

content aggregators, Internet service providers, hosting companies and site operators themselves need to help in the fight against piracy, he said,

several cable companies have already begun working "cooperatively" with Viacom

Viacom doesn't need is new laws,

Letting the free market operate unfettered would be wiser, he added.

He also said his company's high-profile copyright suit against Google's YouTube filed earlier this year "promises to be a landmark case that will clarify the rights and responsibilities of all media and content owners in the digital age."

Tags: copywrite, drm, intellectual property rights, media

<clipSource>http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9789391-7.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20</clipSource>

Watermarking to replace DRM?

clipped by: hjharris
clipper's remarks: interesting area requiring a lot of new work

Clip Source: blogs.cnet.com

The idea: whenever a watermarked file is played on an ActiveNow-enabled device, the service could dynamically insert some sort of advertising--presumably audio, but perhaps video or text depending on the device being used.

I could see watermarking eventually taking the place of DRM, which is both ineffective and alienating to consumers

Instead of trying to prevent users from copying and sharing audio files, content owners could simply trace the paths of these files, then establish some sort of remuneration system. Activated Content's idea of dynamic advertising is interesting, but it seems more reasonable to me to build some sort of pooled payment system

Tags: drm, piracy, intellectual property rights

<clipSource>http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13526_1-9761049-27.html</clipSource>
