To return to the airline, the problem was having no available workaround to solve the business-rule impasse, to ensure that all parties were satisfied. In terms of day-to-day business planning, the best idea is to empower your workforce - by providing adequate resources and sufficient personal development - to have the flexibility and confidence to deal with these exceptions when they occur.

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) appears to have rejected the appeals of four countries to the approval of Microsoft's OOXML XML-based document standard.

The governments of South Africa, India, Venezuela and Brazil all appealed the decision earlier this year by the ISO to ratify the OOXML standard under a fast track procedure, although detailed explanations of all four appeals didn't emerge.

Earlier in the year a UK Unix users group took the British Standard's Institution to court in an attempt to force the organisation to drop its support for OOXML, claiming that the organisation went from making 635 comments on the standard to openly supporting it without due consideration.

MediaWAN Backhaul allows media networks to install Encoders and Decoders at remote locations and automatically acquire and distribute video and audio content to central servers where it is immediately available for use.

The system operates over a private MPLS network that provides a very high QoS and highly efficient use of the bandwidth enabling broadcast-resolution video to be delivered at a fraction of the cost of traditional satellite transmission. The system operates at very low latency, which significantly improves the performance of the circuit for remote interviews.

Tory leader attacks NHS IT programme

Conservative Party leader David Cameron has attacked the government over its handling of the £12.4bn NHS National Programme for IT (NPfIT), claiming that ministers had “fallen for the sales patter” of IT suppliers and consultants.

“Spend a few million on these consultants, they're told, a few billion on this computer project, and everything will be ok. Well it isn't.”

“Today Google has three million medical articles online, there for public viewing and easy searching... It's this horizontal diffusion of knowledge that makes me so confident we can do better than the government's proposal for a vast, centralised, NHS database,” he said.

GPs dissatisfied with IT system - BBC

Doctors have called for a review into the £6.2bn NHS computer project, according to a survey by BBC News.

Half of the GPs said the "choose and book" online booking system was poor or fairly poor. The poll was completed by 447 hospital doctors and 340 GPs.

Four out of five GPs had access to the computer system, but half said they rarely or never use it.

Dr Simon Eccles, from Connecting for Health, the organisation overseeing the IT project, said: "We have no difficulty with an independent assessment. We would welcome such a move.

And Richard Bacon, a member of the Public Accounts Committee, said the entire project had been plagued by a "whole load of problems", while choose and book was "little short of a disaster".

Watermarking to replace DRM?

The idea: whenever a watermarked file is played on an ActiveNow-enabled device, the service could dynamically insert some sort of advertising--presumably audio, but perhaps video or text depending on the device being used.

I could see watermarking eventually taking the place of DRM, which is both ineffective and alienating to consumers

Instead of trying to prevent users from copying and sharing audio files, content owners could simply trace the paths of these files, then establish some sort of remuneration system. Activated Content's idea of dynamic advertising is interesting, but it seems more reasonable to me to build some sort of pooled payment system

According to Compete data there are roughly 7.5 billion search queries performed every month by the US Online Population. However there are only about 5 billion search referrals every month

Yahoo! pretty much takes the cake on this one with about 75% of searches performed on Yahoo! in August resulted in a referral. By comparison, searches on Google result in a referral about 65% of the time and searches on MSN/Live result in a referral about 59% of the time.

it is important to consider actual referrals as well as top level searches

The project will help set an example, said Greenpeace policy adviser Charlie Kronick.
