Girl who bleeds without being cut baffles doctors

Twinkle Dwivedi has a rare condition where she bleeds spontaneously from any part of her body

Villagers near her home in Uttar Pradesh, India, believe she must be cursed and shout cruel things in the street.

Indian medics now believe her condition is an extreme version of a rare blood platelet disorder for which they cannot find a cure.

"It didn't hurt. But it was scary and messy, and my friends thought it was disgusting.

Finally doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi decided she has Type 2 Platelet Disorder, a rare condition where blood is dangerously low in clotting particles.

However, a blood specialist in Britain came up with a different diagnosis and believes there may be hope.

Consultant haematologist Dr Drew Provan, of Barts Hospital in London, said:

"She may have Type II von Willebrand disease and she should see a coagulation doctor for treatment."

Delhi shopping areas hit by bombs

Five bombs have ripped through busy shopping areas of India's capital, Delhi, within minutes of each other, killing at least 20 people, police say.

The explosions, which also injured about 90 people, are not thought to have been very powerful but happened in crowded areas.

More than 400 people have died since October 2005 in bomb attacks on Indian cities such as Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

India has blamed Islamist militant groups for these previous bombings.

Four unexploded bombs were also found and defused, police said.

CNN-IBN, a local TV news channel, said it had received an e-mail before the blasts from a group calling itself the "Indian Mujahideen".

In the space of two weeks, Hurricane Gustav has caused an estimated $3 billion in losses in the U.S. and killed about 110 people in the U.S. and the Caribbean, catastrophic floods in northern India have left a million people homeless, and a 6.2-magnitude earthquake has rocked China's southwest, smashing more than 400,000 homes.

If climate change is having an effect on the intensities of storms, it's not obvious in the historical weather data. And whatever effect it is having is much, much smaller than the effect of development along coastlines.

But the most insidious effect of building condos and industry along water is that we are systematically stripping coasts of the protection that used to cushion the blow of extreme weather. Three years after Katrina, southern Louisiana is still losing a football field's worth of wetlands every 38 minutes.

The amazing well of Chand Baori

Built back in the 10th century, the incredible well of Chand Baori, India was a practical solution to the water problem in the area. The arid climate forced the locals to dig deep for a dependable water source, one that would last throughout an entire year.

Chand Baori well is 30 meters deep, it has 13 floors and 3,500 steps. Legends say that ghosts build it in one night and that it has so many steps to make it impossible for someone to retrieve a coin once it’s been dropped in the well.

There has been much debate in this campaign about which of our enemies the next U.S. president should deign to talk to.

The real story, the next president may discover, though, is how few countries are waiting around for us to call. It is hard to remember a time when more shifts in the global balance of power are happening at once — with so few in America’s favor.

According to Congressional testimony Wednesday by the energy expert Gal Luft, with oil at $200 a barrel, OPEC could “potentially buy Bank of America in one month worth of production, Apple computers in a week and General Motors in just three days.”

The first rule of holes is when you’re in one, stop digging. When you’re in three, bring a lot of shovels.

Sherpa climbs Everest for record-breaking 18th time

A 48-year-old Nepalese Sherpa broke his own world record Thursday by getting to the summit of Mount Everest for a breathtaking eighteenth time.

"This is another proud moment for the whole mountaineering fraternity."

Since it was first summitted in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the 8,848-metre (29,028-foot) mountain has been summitted more than 3,000 times.

Kidnapped Pakistani diplomat freed

The brother of Pakistan's ambassador to Afghanistan says the envoy has been released, three months after he was kidnapped near the two countries' border.

Tahir Azizzudin said on Saturday the authorities had told the family of Tariq Azizuddin that he had been released and was in good health and likely to reach home soon.

Azizuddin disappeared in February in Khyber tribal region along with his driver and bodyguard as they drove from the Pakistani city of Peshawar towards the Afghan border.

On a video aired on April 19 on an Arab satellite channel, Azizuddin said Taliban fighters had kidnapped them.

Azizudin's recovery comes amid recent headway in peace talks between the Pakistani Taliban and the six-month-old coalition government in Pakistan led by Yousuf Raza Gilani, the prime minister.

It was not immediately known whether a swap led to the release of the envoy.
