Melamine found in 31 new milk powder brands

(AP) -- New testing has found melamine tainting in another 31 brands of Chinese milk powder.

The new testing follows earlier results showing widespread contamination among infant formula blamed for the deaths of four children and kidney ailments among 54,000 others.

Cadbury milk chocolate bars are seen in a store in Beijing, China, Monday.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong authorities said the amount of melamine found in samples of chocolate made at British candy maker Cadbury's Beijing factory was legally acceptable for human consumption.

Tuesday's announcement came a day after the company recalled 11 items sold in parts of Asia and the Pacific.

Chinese food safety personnel check the fresh milk at a milk collection station in Chengdu, China, Sunday.

Cadbury said the Hong Kong test results did not change their decision to recall the products from the Beijing plant.

Nightclub fire in China kills 43, injures 88

Chinese firefighters and investigators check the burnt out 'Dance King' nightclub in the city of Shenzhen. The fire broke out at around 11:00 pm on September 20, and a subsequent stampede killed 43 people and left 88 injured in the latest deadly incident highlighting China's abysmal fire safety record.

A fire that broke out late Saturday inside a nightclub near the Hong Kong border caused a stampede of panicked partygoers trying to escape killing at least 43 people, and leaving more than 88 injured. What caused the inferno is said to be fireworks which were a part of a show featured inside the nightclub.

The fire, which broke out late Saturday, also injured at least 88 people, an official with the Shenzhen Work Safety Bureau said. Like many Chinese officials, the man refused to give his name.

Shenzhen is just over the border with Hong Kong in Guangdong province.

After attending the spectacular closing ceremony at the Beijing Olympics and feeling the vibrations from hundreds of Chinese drummers pulsating in my own chest, I was tempted to conclude two things: “Holy mackerel, the energy coming out of this country is unrivaled.” And, two: “We are so cooked. Start teaching your kids Mandarin.”

However, I’ve learned over the years not to over-interpret any two-week event. Olympics don’t change history. They are mere snapshots — a country posing in its Sunday bests for all the world too see.

China did not build the magnificent $43 billion infrastructure for these games, or put on the unparalleled opening and closing ceremonies, simply by the dumb luck of discovering oil.

China has been preparing for the Olympics; we’ve been preparing for Al Qaeda. They’ve been building better stadiums, subways, airports, roads and parks. And we’ve been building better metal detectors, armored Humvees and pilotless drones.

The Price of China’s Olympic Success

I always knew being a professional athlete meant making serious sacrifices and that gymnasts don’t really have a childhood, but this like modern day torture to me.

It’s nice to compete and win a title for your country but I have to wonder if it’s worth going through all this…

As a parent I couldn’t let my kids go through anything like this, no matter how much I wanted them to be successful in sports, it’s just too much.

This evening, NBC interrupted its Olympics coverage of women’s gymnastics for an interview with President Bush. Last week, Bush gave a speech and expressed “deep concerns” with China’s “detention of political dissidents, human-rights advocates and religious activists.” Costas brought up this speech and asked about “America’s own problems.” Bush denied that America has any problems:

COSTAS: This past week, you restated America’s fundamental differences with China. But given China’s growing strength, and America’s own problems, realistically, how much leverage does the U.S. have here?

BUSH: First of all, I don’t see America having problems. I see America as a nation that is a world leader that has got great values.

The LEGO Beijing Olympics

A team of LEGO and sports enthusiasts presented a LEGO model of some of the buildings built by the Chinese for the 2008 Olympic Games. The model was presented in Hong Kong and includes small scale replicas of buildings such as Bird’s Nest stadium, Water Cube swimming center and the Olympic Village.

The LEGO Beijing Olympics were created by members of the Hong Kong LEGO users group and took more than 100 hours to complete. Great effort, the model looks amazing.

Hidden Wonders of Tibet

When I came across this image it brought back many memories for me as I miss the beauty of Tibet China. The landscapes of Tibet are simply startling and out of this world!!

The view of the valley below was taken from the Reting Monastery; it sits up in the mountains at 13,500 feet above sea level. The valley below is extremely beautiful and if you look really carefully, you can see the winding river that is also supplied by the melt off of snow.

Heavy snowfall in some areas is very normal.
