IT’S 8 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, and you are headed for a business appointment 300 mi. away. You slide into your sleek, two-passenger air-cushion car, press a sequence of buttons and the national traffic computer notes your destination, figures out the current traffic situation and signals your car to slide out of the garage.

The car accelerates to 150 mph in the city’s suburbs, then hits 250 mph in less built-up areas

Traffic is heavy, typically, but there’s no need to worry. The traffic computer, which feeds and receives signals to and from all cars in transit between cities, keeps vehicles at least 50 yds. apart. There hasn’t been an accident since the system was inaugurated.

Computers also handle travel reservations, relay telephone messages, keep track of birthdays and anniversaries, compute taxes and even figure the monthly bills for electricity, water, telephone and other utilities.

Obesity: Scientists identify a protein that promotes the burning of body fat

Scientists have found a protein that can promote the burning of body fat – a discovery that could lead to new ways to tackle obesity.

Mice injected with a protein called BMP7 increased their production of "good" brown fat cells, while keeping their levels of the normal white fat cells constant.

In their experiments, Yu-Hua Tseng's team at the Joslin Diabetes Centre at Harvard Medical School looked at the factors that determine the amounts of different types of fat cell in the body. They identified a protein called BMP7 which promotes the creation of brown fat. Without it, the amount of brown fat in mice ran low.

The next step, he says, is to find specific drugs and techniques that could help the body make more brown fat cells or else genetically engineer white fat cells to turn brown.

Gorilla grieves over death of her baby

A female gorilla has been photographed grieving over the loss of her baby, showing a strength of emotion rarely witnessed in the animal world.

Gorilla Gana, 11, was left shattered in her compound at the zoo in Muenster in northern Germany at the weekend when her three-month-old baby Claudio suddenly died.

Visitors wept as Gana held her lifeless child up in the air, vainly seeking to restore movement to his lolling head, his limp arms.

She put the baby on her back and walked around, stopping to look at him after a few paces to see if he had recovered.

"On Wednesday he gave the impression to keepers that he wasn't feeling too well.

"On Friday he wasn't eating or drinking properly and seemed to be growing weaker.

"We were keeping a close eye on him but suddenly, on Saturday morning, he died."

By Monday morning the zoo keepers were still unable to get to the body of Claudio, so fiercely is Gana guarding him.

Over the next hour, as I held him in my hand, he warmed up and started to move.

I smashed up some nuts and dried fruit from my trail mix, mixed it with water, and fed it to the eager baby with a syringe from my first aid kit.

Needing my hands free for the hike, I found the perfect spot for Chip ... I emptied the water from my Nalgene bottle, put the fleece hat in the bottom to make a nice bed, and snuggled him inside.

Back home, he gets his first real meal of chipmunk-appropriate formula.

In less than a week, his eyes are open!

As the days go by, he gets more and more mature.

Based on where I found him (approx. 6000 ft elevation in the Olympics), I’m guessing he’s an Olympic chipmunk (a subspecies of the yellow pine chipmunk (Tamias amoenus caurinus).

He loves pockets.

A Biblical Seven Years

After attending the spectacular closing ceremony at the Beijing Olympics and feeling the vibrations from hundreds of Chinese drummers pulsating in my own chest, I was tempted to conclude two things: “Holy mackerel, the energy coming out of this country is unrivaled.” And, two: “We are so cooked. Start teaching your kids Mandarin.”

However, I’ve learned over the years not to over-interpret any two-week event. Olympics don’t change history. They are mere snapshots — a country posing in its Sunday bests for all the world too see.

China did not build the magnificent $43 billion infrastructure for these games, or put on the unparalleled opening and closing ceremonies, simply by the dumb luck of discovering oil.

China has been preparing for the Olympics; we’ve been preparing for Al Qaeda. They’ve been building better stadiums, subways, airports, roads and parks. And we’ve been building better metal detectors, armored Humvees and pilotless drones.

A beam of white light is made up of all the colours in the spectrum. The range extends from red through to violet, with orange, yellow, green and blue in between. But there is one colour that is notable by its absence (click here to check). Pink (or magenta, to use its official name) simply isn’t there. But if pink isn’t in the light spectrum, how come we can see it?

Here’s an experiment you can try: stare at the pink circle below for about one minute, then look over at the blank white space next to the image. What do you see? You should see an afterimage. What colour is it?

You should have seen a green afterimage, but why is this significant?

It is a common misconception that red is complementary to green. However, if you try the same experiment as above with a red image, you will see a turquoise afterimage, since red is actually complementary to turquoise. Similarly, orange is complementary to blue, and yellow to violet.
