What’s the difference between a Lego builder and a Lego artist? The answer is simple. Nathan Sawaya. Formerly studying law, Sawaya decided his life needed to go in a different direction. That direction happened to be a professional Lego artist. He currently displays his “brick” works in exhibitions.

Legos have never held this much cultural significance. Or something like that. I dunno, just trying to sound artsy. But wow, take a look at more of these pics after the jump.

Enter the work of fellow-Lego lover Mike Stimpson. On his Flickr set you can see his toy block genius at work: he takes classic photographs and recreates them with Lego. I appreciate how he doesn’t necessarily take any of the pre-supposed emotional impact of the Lego itself into account when he chooses which photos to recreate. Sure, Lego are always smiling, but that doesn’t mean he only recreates happy photos - like in his reenactment of the iconic “unknown rebel” in Tiannemen Square…

to minimize their contact surfaces", the most awesomely complicated way of saying "oil and water don't mix" possible. By preparing polyethylene microgel components and adding them to an oil/water mixture, the specially shaped bits align themselves along the spherical liquid interfaces. Applying a few seconds of UV light fixes the microgel in position and you have a ready made, biocompatible (and degradable) matrix ready for the addition of cells.

Replicating the different tissue organizations of different organs becomes nothing more than a recipe book, choosing your initial microcomponents, mixture and baking time.

Organs are important. This means it kind of sucks if you're waiting for one, because everyone is already using theirs, but recent research by MIT and Harvard researchers will help usher in an age where you can have them made to order.

There is a great deal of interest in self-assembling structures, where you can almost bake up the desired shape by your choice of initial ingredients and shaking it until you get what you want.

This technique has already met with success in computer applicable elements, and now a team of MIT and Harvard researchers led by Professor Ali Khademhosseini of Harvard are applying it to biological samples.

the ability to create custom cellular configurations will allow researchers to study poorly understood cellular communication mechanisms and more.

To begin with the focus is on replacing existing organs, but it's only a matter of time before people start designing improved models, or new ones altogether.

Lego fan marks 50th anniversary

A Teesside man who claims to have the biggest collection of Lego in the country has marked the iconic brick's 50th anniversary.

Phil Traviss, from Yarm, has more than 500,000 coloured bricks and has been collecting the pieces for 25 years.

The 50-year-old said he has spent tens of thousands of pounds on his haul which takes up most of his home.

In January 1958, Lego's Danish founder Ole Kirk Christansen secured the patent for the modern day brick design.

The toy has gone onto to become one of the biggest sellers in history.

Mr Traviss said: "Like most kids I was given a few sets of Lego but when I got to 25 I had the urge to build a collection.

"The 50th anniversary is a great milestone and I have been sharing my experiences with other collectors and builders across the country.

"But it is not just the bricks I have, I've got models used in shop displays which have been glued together, egg cups, badges, glasses anything to do with Lego really."
