WASHINGTON (Reuters) - America's alcohol prohibition lasted 13 years, filled the country's prisons, inspired contempt for the law among millions, bred corruption and produced Al Capone. What it did not do was keep Americans from drinking.

America's marijuana prohibition drew into its 72nd year this month. It has created a huge underground industry

in 1978, when a bill introduced by Senator Edward Kennedy was passed by the Senate but never got to a vote in the House.

1. Free Rolling Stones Concert at Altamont Speedway, 1969

Some heralded the event as being “Woodstock West,” with roughly 300,000 people in attendance.

The Rolling Stones hired motorcycle gang Hells Angels to provide security at the event. They traded the Angels $500 worth of beer in return for controlling the crowd.

2. The Who in Cincinnati, 1979

It was December 3rd, 1979, and 18,500 fans had gathered outside the Coliseum in Cincinnati.

The energetic scene quickly turned chaotic as the large crowd surged toward the doors, trampling upon and crushing 11 people to death.

3. Pearl Jam at the Roskilde Festival, Denmark, 2000

Roskilde Festival in Denmark is Europe’s largest outdoor concert. In the year 2000, it drew a crowd of about 100,000.

Robot teddy bear car navigation system

On June 3, engineers at iXs Research Corporation unveiled a robotic teddy bear designed to work as a talking car navigation system. The prototype robot stands 30 centimeters (1 ft) tall and has 6 joints in its arms and neck, which it uses to make gestures while providing spoken directions.

The robot bear is also equipped with functions to improve auto safety, such as an alcohol detection sensor embedded in its neck. If it smells booze, the robot confronts the driver, saying, “You haven’t been drinking, have you?” Other sensors detect reckless driving, so if the driver suddenly accelerates or slams on the brakes, the robot says, “Watch out!”

As a bonus feature, the robot bear provides information about nearby landmarks when you stroke its head.

We want to make it more compact,” says CEO Fuminori Yamasaki, “and we’d like to offer a variety of shapes, including other characters and a plain mechanical version.”

ScienceDaily (Mar. 10, 2008) — Previous studies have pointed out the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption as a factor in lowering cardiovascular risk. In a study conducted by the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, researchers found that middle-aged non-drinkers who began consuming moderate amounts of alcohol saw an immediate benefit of lower cardiac disease morbidity with no change in mortality after four years.

Studying 7,697 people between 45 and 64 who were non-drinkers and who were participating in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study over a 10 year period,
