Who Will Tell the People?

Traveling the country these past five months while writing a book, I’ve had my own opportunity to take the pulse, far from the campaign crowds.

They are not only tired of nation-building in Iraq and in Afghanistan, with so little to show for it. They sense something deeper — that we’re just not that strong anymore. We’re borrowing money to shore up our banks from city-states called Dubai and Singapore.

Our president’s latest energy initiative was to go to Saudi Arabia and beg King Abdullah to give us a little relief on gasoline prices. I guess there was some justice in that. When you, the president, after 9/11, tell the country to go shopping instead of buckling down to break our addiction to oil, it ends with you, the president, shopping the world for discount gasoline.

Who will tell the people? We are not who we think we are. We are living on borrowed time and borrowed dimes.

Chinese artist Li Wei from Beijing started off his performance series ‘Mirroring’ and later on took off attention with his ‘Falls’ series which shows the artist with his head and chest embedded into the ground. His work is a mixture of performance art and photography that creates illusions of a sometimes dangerous reality. Li Wei states that these images are not computer montages and works with the help of props such as mirror, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics.

The Bay of Blood (Stop this Merciless Killing)

The Faroes are a group of about 30 islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean, situated halfway between Iceland and Scotland. They fall under the crown of Denmark, but are semi-independent. The population is about 46,000, and they inhabit about half of the islands. They depend soley on commercial fishing for their livelihood.

For hundreds of years, the people of the Faroes have hunted the pods of pilot whales which swim near their shores. The hunt, known as the Grindadrap is usually in the summer months, and hasn't changed since the first hunt, hundreds of years ago, although, with modern technology, it has gotten much easier. Power boats, radios, and echo-sounders make life great for these "hunters".

just for this gruesome purpose - a grindkniver. This weapon is 18cm long, (7 inches) and is used to sever the animal's carotid artery and jugular vein.

Johan Lorbeer became famous in the past years particularly because of his spectacular "Still-Life" Performances, which took place frequently in the public area. His installations like "Proletarian Mural" and "Tarzan" are famous in Germany, but still unknown internationally. This artist was pointed to us, by our fan Simon, who sent us the original article. I have no idea how these performances were done, it bugs me /a lot) quite frankly! So if you have some knowledge or ideas, be sure to post them under comments! This is what Simon sent us:
