Death toll in China earthquake rises to 7,600

CHONGQING (AP) — A massive earthquake struck central China on Monday, killing more than 7,600 people and trapping nearly 900 students under the rubble of their school, state media reported.

The earthquake sent thousands of people rushing out of buildings and into the streets hundreds of miles away in Beijing and Shanghai. The temblor was felt as far away as Pakistan, Vietnam and Thailand.

Plainclothes officers in trouble - didn't recognize off-duty chief

Three-star NYPD Chief Douglas Zeigler

At least one cop has been disciplined for ordering the NYPD's highest-ranking uniformed black officer out of his auto while the three-star chief was off-duty and parked in Queens, the Daily News has learned.

In his briefing to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, Zeigler said the two cops, who are white, had no legitimate reason to approach his SUV, ranking sources said.

After they ordered him to get out, one officer did not believe the NYPD identification Zeigler gave him.

Zeigler, in his discussions with Kelly, said the officers never yelled "Gun!" sources said.

That cop was stripped of his gun and badge and placed on modified duty last night, sources said. The status of the second officer was unclear.

Zeigler has headed the Community Affairs Bureau since January 2006. His wife, Neldra Zeigler, is NYPD deputy commissioner for equal employment opportunity.

A woman's voice becomes more attractive when she is most fertile. That's according to Nathan Pipitone and Gordon Gallup of the State University of New York at Albany.

The pair recorded women counting from 1 to 10 at four occasions during their menstrual cycle. They then replayed the recordings at random to male and female students and asked them to rate the attractiveness of the voices. Both males and females judged the women's voices to be most attractive if they were recorded during the peak fertility period of the menstrual cycle, and less attractive if they were recorded during non-fertile periods (Evolution and Human Behavior, DOI: 10.1016/j.evolhumbehav.2008.02.001).

Geoffrey Miller at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, showed last year that women lap dancers earn more tips during their fertile days.

A Century Apart: Temple Meads

The 1870s joint railway station at Temple Meads. The early 1900s view (top) looks remarkably similar to how it does today (bottom). But as with the General Hospital, wartime bombing took its toll, in this case destroying the original French pavilion roof. An impressive array of early motors (presumably taxis) in the 1900s photo. Exterior lighting is present in the foreground of both shots, just with a different style and appearance.

1st St SW: 1928 / 2007

The only remaining portion of the Underwood Block is being integrated into Union Square condo development. A massive fire in the early 90's saw the large apartment block to be torn down. Parts of the old structure that were attached to the 3-story part were kept as to not disrupt the undamaged building.
