He has no idea how he does what he does. From most accounts, he does it very well.

“Phil finds the water,” said Frank Assali, an almond farmer and convert. “No doubt about it.”

Mr. Stine, you see, is a “water witch,” one of a small band of believers for whom the ancient art of dowsing is alive and well.

Emphasis, of course, on well. Using nothing more than a Y-shaped willow stick, Mr. Stine has as his primary function determining where farmers should drill to slake their crops’ thirst, adding an element of the mystical to a business where the day-to-day can often be painfully plain.

“I just tell people,” Mr. Stine said, “it’s the amount of lead” in your haunches.

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

What does he look for in a good dowsing rod?

“It’s got to have leaves on it, and it can’t really be bigger than your finger,” Mr. Stine said. “And you got to find one with a fork in it.”

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/09/us/09water.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin</clipSource>

McCain Loses It: Calls Americans 'My Fellow Prisoners'

clipped by: hitchhiker08
clipper's remarks: Ouch!

Clip Source: in.youtube.com

McCain Loses It: Calls Americans 'My Fellow Prisoners'

[Video]

Tags: mccain, senility, us presidential elections, us, youtube

<clipSource>http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=JYFm5kK4f1k</clipSource>

"Large Fella" Bikes Back to Life

clipped by: mugofcoffee
clipper's remarks: 50 pounds in the first four months – and they kept on coming off. He'll be quick to point out that he wasn't “dieting”; he was changing his life. Permanently.

He and his family left the east coast for Minneapolis, largely for its reputation as a cycling haven. Thus far Cutshall has dropped to about 230 pounds; he estimates that he'll plateau around 180 but says, “"It's not about a goal weight," he said. "I'm just doing what's healthy for my body, and the results will follow."

Clip Source: www.carectomy.com

In 2005, Cutshall weighed 501 pounds. The avant-garde jazz drummer, husband, and father was in need of a serious change. His size XXXXXXXXXXL lifestyle wasn't going to sustain him for much longer. His doctor told him that he'd need stomach-reduction surgery and lots of medication just to survive – and that his way over-stressed body only had about a 50% chance of surviving the procedure.

Cutshall opted for none of the above. He ordered a custom-made bicycle that could support his body and on Thanksgiving, 2005, he took his first spin around the neighborhood. He rode for 1.9 miles, gasping all the way, with five breaks to recuperate. I didn't want to cause a scene in front of your friends and make them question the sanitary quality of the food they were about to eat. Now that I have gotten absolutely nowhere with you I deeply regret this decision.

Europe and high income Asia-Pacific countries also own disproportionate amounts of wealth. In contrast, the overall share of wealth owned by people in Africa, China, India, and other lower income countries in Asia is considerably less than their population share, sometimes by a factor of more than ten.

Tags: wealth, economy

<clipSource>http://www.gizmag.com/go/6571/picture/29662/</clipSource>

Child bodies found in freezer

clipped by: kkcapricorn
clipper's remarks: What kind of comment can I possibly make about such an obscene tragedy?
~~~~
She is going to jail for a long time and will live with women, many of whom likely have children of their own -- in foster care(?). From populist opprobrium to elitist disdain — standard social behavioral devices have proved unable to dent humanity’s greedy nature.
Even religion’s not insubstantial powers of persuasion (think Hell) and coercion (think Inquisition) have proved insufficient to blot out this insidious sin.
Capitalism, in all its cleverness, decided that what you can’t beat, you should use. It worked to harness greed.
Yet despite the consistent failure to temper our greedy nature, I still have hopes
That piece is fear.
My suggestion, then, is to put fear back in the picture. When the banker who loses his or her bank also loses his or her shirt, greed will be tempered. At least for a while.
<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/29/opinion/29mon4.html?th&emc=th</clipSource>
