Words failed to stamp out smoking, so Britain will require graphic pictures of diseased organs on cigarette packs next year, the government announced Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007. The images include a diseased lung, a chest cut open for heart surgery, and a large tumor on a man's neck. In all, Britain chose 15 images from a selection developed by the European Commission. Britain will be the first member of the European Union to require such warnings, Health Secretary Alan Johnson said. With apologies to old Will Shakespeare, what's in a number? This past week saw a resolution of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s secondary drama -- the destination of the No. 8.

If you've been on vacation, hadn't read SI.com, a newspaper or turned on a cable television channel, let us fill you in: Earnhardt won't be racing with his No. 8 Chevrolet Hendrick Motorsports next year after negotiations with his present team, Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI), fell through.

NASCAR racing is very different from other types of professional team sports, which have franchises whose teams own their own numbers. In the case of stock car racing, NASCAR owns the numbers.

Here's an interesting analogy, when Alex Rodriguez joined the Yankees he couldn't keep the No. 3 he had worn with the Mariners and Rangers because Babe Ruth's No. 3 had long been retired by the team.

The current speculation is that Junior will run No. 81 next year, similar to A-Rod's situation where he wears the No. 13 now.

Error In Ark. Law allows kids to Marry

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A law passed this year allows Arkansans of any age — even infants — to marry if their parents agree, and the governor may have to call a special session to fix the mistake, lawmakers said Friday.

The legislation was intended to establish 18 as the minimum age to marry but also allow pregnant teenagers to marry with parental consent, bill sponsor Rep. Will Bond said. An extraneous "not" in the bill, however, allows anyone who is not pregnant to marry at any age if the parents allow it.

"It's clearly not the intent to allow 10-year-olds or 11-year-olds to get married," Bond said. "The legislation was screwed up."

The bill reads: "In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is not pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage."

Woman has pencil removed from head!

After being plagued for 55 years with the torment of a pencil lodged in her head, a German woman has finally had it removed.

Margaret Wegner, now 59, was 4 years old when she fell while carrying the 3.15 inch-long pencil, which went through her cheek and into her brain.

"It bored right through the skin and disappeared into my head," Wegner told Germany's best-selling newspaper, Bild. "It hurt like crazy."

At the time the technology did not exist to safely remove the pencil, so Wegner had to live with it — and the chronic headaches and nosebleeds that it brought

But on Friday, Dr. Hans Behrbohm, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Berlin's Park-Klinik Weissensee, was able to

then take most of it out.

The operation was particularly difficult because of the way the pencil had shifted as Wegner grew, Behrbohm told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Van Halen, Roth to announce tour next week

Van Halen will announce a 50-date American reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth during a news conference in Hollywood next week, sources said.

The arena trek will begin in early October.

Roth, who split from the rock group in the mid-1980s in hopes of solo stardom, will reunite with co-founders Eddie Van Halen on guitar and brother Alex Van Halen on drums. Eddie's teenage son Wolfgang will sub for Michael Anthony on bass.

A proposed summer amphitheater tour by the group never got off the ground, with Eddie Van Halen entering a rehabilitation facility for undisclosed reasons in March.

In the months since, the guitarist has been seen publicly looking healthy and fit.

Van Halen last toured in 2004, with Roth's replacement, vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

The FBI and IRS have searched the home of Republican Sen. Ted Stevens in a ski resort in Alaska as part of an investigation into his links with an oil-services company

"All I can really say is we are conducting a search at the residence. We can't go any deeper into detail than that," said Dave Heller, spokesman for the FBI

The FBI and IRS entered the senator's Girdwood, Alaska home in the early afternoon with a search warrant.

The longest-serving Republican in U.S Senate history, known for delivering billions of federal dollars to his home state,

said: "My attorneys were advised this morning that federal agents wished to search my home in Girdwood in connection with an ongoing investigation.

I continue to believe this investigation should proceed to its conclusion without any appearance that I have attempted to influence the outcome,"

Stevens, 83, is the subject of a grand-jury investigation into his links with managers of VECO Corp., the state's largest oil-services company

Four dead babies found in Maryland home

The remains of four premature babies have been found hidden in garbage bags and a blanket at the home of the owner of a taxi company in Ocean City, Maryland

Christy Freeman, 37, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with the death of one of the babies. Further charges may follow

Police found the body of one baby wrapped in a blanket in Freeman's apartment last Thursday after she was admitted to a local hospital with cramps and bleeding

Doctors at the hospital determined that Freeman had been pregnant but was no longer, prompting police to search her apartment.

At the apartment, police also found a garbage bag hidden in a trunk in Freeman's bedroom. Inside were three smaller plastic bags, two of which contained the remains of two more infants, and a third contained what police said was a placenta.

The next day, the remains of a fourth infant were found

None of them were full-term

Freeman has four other children who are believed to be teenagers

A New York man has been charged with beating his mother to death with a barbell after losing his temper while watching a baseball game on television.

Michael Anthony, 25, was watching the New York Mets lose a game on Saturday from his home in the borough of Queens when he began furiously banging on the walls, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement on Monday.

His father Fred Fischman shouted at him to stop, but Anthony punched him in the face and threw him to the ground, according to the criminal charges.

When Anthony's mother, Maria Fischman, 61, tried to intervene, prosecutors said he stabbed her once in the head with a knife before chasing her into a bedroom where he struck her several times with the 20 pound (9 kilogram) barbell.

"It is difficult to imagine a crime more heinous than that of a son viciously attacking his parents and, in the process, fatally beating his mother to death," Brown said.

Anthony has been remanded in custody and faces a maximum of life

suffered a seizure at his summer home

on Monday, causing a fall that resulted in minor scrapes, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said.

He will remain in a hospital in Maine overnight.

"It's my understanding he's fully recovered, said Christopher Burke, a spokesman for Penobscot Bay Medical Center, where Roberts was taken.

Roberts, 52, was taken by ambulance to the medical center, where he underwent a "thorough neurological evaluation, which revealed no cause for concern," Arberg said in a statement.

Roberts had a similar episode in 1993, she said.

Doctors called Monday's incident "a benign idiopathic seizure," Arberg said. The White House described the January 1993 episode as an "isolated, idiosyncratic seizure."

A benign seizure means that doctors performed an MRI and other tests to conclude there was no tumor, stroke or other explanation.

But after two seizures, the likelihood of another at some point is greater than 60 percent.

In its most recent report, "Out of Balance," the consumer advocacy group found that debit cards are the largest source of account overdraft fees for banks and credit unions. Debit card point of sale and ATM overdrafts cost consumers $7.8 billion in 2006, which represented 45 percent of the $17.5 billion the financial institutions received in overdraft fees last year.

In hopes of reducing overdraft fees, the center is supporting legislation sponsored by Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., and Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., that would require banks and credit unions to warn their customers before authorizing an electronic overdraft. The House recently held a hearing on the legislation.

And financial institutions should restrain their fee frenzy and stop routinely allowing consumers to withdraw funds that exceed their account levels, only to slam them with overdraft charges.

One of the biggest selling points for debit cards has been that you couldn't spend more than you had in your bank account, making them a good alternative to racking up debt on a credit card.

But, as many users have discovered, the debit card carries the same problem as its credit card cousin: You can spend over your limit.

The practice of approving a check or debit transaction when the account has insufficient funds is an intentional effort to drive up revenue, according to a new study by the Center for Responsible Lending, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and policy organization.

"Banks should protect customers' funds, not plunder them with high fees and harmful practices," said Eric Halperin, director of the center's Washington office.

This year, the center published a report that found that debit card purchases at point of sale terminals and withdrawals at ATMs triggered 46 percent of overdrafts. The rate for paper checks was just 27 percent of overdrafts.
