Burma Report Back

Avaaz Members Donate over $325,000 to the Burmese Democracy Movement

3 months ago, thousands of Avaaz members donated over $300,000 (in just 4 days!) to support the Burmese people's efforts to peacefully promote political change and tell the world about their struggle.

Reasons for Hope:

The protests last fall brought a whole new generation of nonviolent activistsinto politics. Hundreds of thousands of new people are eager to take up the cause.

1) Technology - $92,000- Burmese groups need to be able to communicate with each other effectively both to coordinate their activities and keep links with the rest of the world.

5) Reserve - $13,000 - we kept a small reserve for upcoming projects and needs that we haven't yet identified. Many plans are being developed for 2008, and this money will help kickstart the best one or two of them.

If we're talking about the lungs, the two biggest concerns are emphysema and lung cancer. Tobacco scores far worse in both categories:

Emphysema was detected in only one of the cannabis smokers (1.3%), in 15 (16.3%) of the cigarette smokers, in 17 (18.9%) of the combination smokers, and in none of the non-smoking groups. [MedPageToday.com]

With regards to lung cancer, the case for is even stronger. Conclusive evidence shows that marijuana does not cause lung cancer at all, and may even help prevent it.

While smoking marijuana is never good for the lungs, the active ingredient in pot may help fight lung cancer, new research shows.

we have noticed an interesting development. There is now great fear around questioning anything in your society, government or the things you perceive around you everyday. We see now more than ever before, that it has being infiltrated by a force that is severely limiting your discourse and discovery of each other and your world.

That force is "fear".

It is apparent that simply questioning anything at this point in time is seen as somewhat of a negative or disrespectful act. It has even been called unpatriotic by some or seen as an attack on the person or institution being questioned. This development can severely hamper your efforts to stand in your own truth and create your world in your highest good . The strongest force which prevents you from speaking your own truth is "fear". To allow yourself to be caught up in this mass consciousness of fear based thinking is a trap with slippery slopes indeed.

Autistic Savant Draws Rome After Viewing it Once

Autistic artist Steven Wiltshire is a "star among savants." In the film Beautiful Minds, A Voyage into the Brain, he is introduced as "The Living Camera." As a child, Stephen was mute and did not relate to other human beings. When he was 11 he sketched the entire city of London in detail after viewing it only once from an airplane. The film tests his ability to draw the city of Rome in panorama after seeing it for the first time in a helicopter. He is given three days to complete the drawing and succeeds brilliantly in rendering exactly the number of columns and archways. (Video 5:15)

Students use the Internet to help Darfur

High school students Nick Anderson and Ana Slavin of Gill, Mass., knew they could raise some money at their school to help the people of Darfur. But they knew they could raise a lot more by enlisting the help of high school students all over the country.

They didn't have friends at every school, but they did have a powerful tool for reaching out to young people — social networking sites.

Six months later, the project started by Anderson and Slavin, Dollars for Darfur, had raised more than $300,000 from students at 2,000 high schools, showing the strength of banding together over the Internet.

All the teens we know are checking these sites all the time, and we wanted to put them to good use as a networking tool that could go to something good," says Anderson, 18.

Students feed homeless despite officials' warnings

For nearly two years, students, parents and staff at the Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School have handed out food and supplies to the homeless once a week on the sidewalk near JFK Plaza in Center City.

But last Thursday, the city's new managing director, Loree Jones, showed up and told the group to move the program elsewhere. The city in recent months has begun to discourage outdoor feeding of homeless people along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and in JFK Plaza.

Veronica Joyner, the charter school's chief executive officer, said police showed up a short time later and ordered the group to disperse, prompting 13-year-old Karima Mims-DeWitt to fearfully ask: "Are we going to go to jail for giving food to the homeless?"

A University of Arizona scientist who has specialized in studying how fireflies and other creatures communicate has won a million-dollar grant to conduct a pioneering 5-year study on the roles that attention and memory play when the human brain hears and processes spoken langua

"What you read in the text books is that if you're right handed, then language is localized to the left hemisphere of your brain," Christensen said. "I found out right away -- that's just not true. Analyzing a human voice also involves the right hemisphere and even parts of the cerebellum." The cerebellum is a large part of the brain that serves to coordinate voluntary movements, posture, and balance in humans.

"These MRI images destroy the myth that you're only using about 10 percent of your brain for any particular task," Christensen said. "The crux of this grant is to learn more about the language, attention and memory centers in the brain, and also about the complex interactions between them."

An earlier Daily Galaxy post, The Importance of Being Forgetful, featured the built in neural process of forgetting, which discussed why the average human brain is equipped with the ability to filter through seemingly irrelevant details. While the average person may not have vast memory resources, it appears to be an evolutionary trade-off that allows the majority of us to focus on the most relevant facts.

However, some of the most incredible minds on Earth lack this ability to filter irrelevant facts, or perhaps it is more accurate to say that to a savant, the irrelevant IS relevant, and incredibly so. Somehow their brains are able to store and access incredible loads of information, even perceiving and relating to this information in an entirely different way.
