Abstract

In this article, Georges Bataille’s notion of intimacy will be re-interpreted to show that it has a role to play in the evolution of technology. The specifically human form of intimacy can be experienced through the successful adoption of technological devices that have the qualities necessary to fit in and work out in our life context. If they manage to become part of our life, then we experience them as projections of our psychophysical personality, and, as such, they escape our positing, objectifying consciousness. Intimacy can be seen as the organizing principle that shapes the evolution of technology towards an ideal end that promises at least an approximation to the absolute intimacy that is unique to the gods.

The eyebox2 from xuuk is a palm-size video camera surrounded by infrared light-emitting diodes. It can record eye contact with 15-degree accuracy at a distance of up to 33 feet. A simple glance from a passerby scores an impression, providing a tally that enables new Google-like measurement metrics that real-world advertisers could only dream about until recently.

But while Vertegaal suggests that the "first" use for xuuk's technology is ambient advertising, he has his sights set on other areas. His grand vision is to use eye activity to create "a mouse for the real world." One potential outcome is more polite devices: Cell phones that won't ring when you're in a conversation, hearing aids that amplify the person you are looking at and TV sets that turn off when you're not watching them.

A device that allows police to see through walls could transform the way they deal with hostage situations, according to the Cambridge-based technology company that developed it.

The short-range radar machine allows the operator to track people moving inside a house and so decide, for example, where and when to storm the building. Rescue workers could also use it to see where earthquake survivors are trapped under rubble or in a burning building.

One option for police and security services dealing with hostage situations is to drill through the wall of the building under siege and insert tiny cameras. This tactic was employed during the Iranian embassy siege in London in 1980. To cover the noise of drilling police planted bogus workmen outside with pneumatic drills.

But the prism 200, developed by Cambridge Consultants, gives a much more immediate picture of what is going on inside a building without potentially alerting occupants. It works by firing 100 radar pulses a second and listening in the short gaps between each one for echoes from inside. It has a range of around 20 metres.

If the room is large and empty then following a moving person using radar is relatively easy. But if the space is cluttered with chairs and desks, for example, the complicated set of reflections coming back becomes too difficult to interpret. The prism 200 works by filtering out radar returns from static objects and only displaying things that move.

Alan Wiltshire of Cambridge Consultants said: "We analyse all the reflections that we get back and we aim to record and remember the static things in the room so we can then track the moving things, which are presumably people."

Although radar is an established technology, he said that until recently computers were not powerful enough to do the processing necessary to filter out the clutter in indoor spaces.

The device, the size of a large briefcase, can be held against the wall of a building or mounted a few metres away on a tripod.

Hi Tech T-Shirt Really Rocks

It's called the WIS - the Wearable Instrument Shirt - and it is tipped to make the air guitar as obsolete as the horse and cart.

Scientists at the CSIRO's Textile and Fibre Technology division in Geelong have woven electronic sensors into a T-shirt so that it can be played liked a real guitar.

Movements by the wearer's arms are mapped and beamed by radio to a computer which interprets them and turns them into musical notes.

The wearer only has to act out playing the instrument to make sounds.

"The left arm chooses a note and the right arm plays it," said Richard Helmer, a CSIRO chemical engineer who led the project. The arrangement can be reversed for left-handed musicians.

"You can play with yours hands above your head," said Dr Helmer. "You can turn around and jump. Whatever you like."

One year ago, this would not have been possible, but the world has changed. In the past 12 months, thousands of ordinary people have become famous. Famous people have been embarrassed. Huge sums of money have changed hands. Lots and lots of Mentos have been dropped into Diet Coke. The rules are different now, and one website changed them: YouTube.

It's been an interesting year in technology. Nintendo invented a video game you control with a magic wand. A new kind of car traveled 3,145 miles on a single gallon of gas. A robot learned to ride a bike. Somebody came up with a nanofabric umbrella that doesn't stay wet. But only YouTube created a new way for millions of people to entertain, educate, shock, rock and grok one another on a scale we've never seen before. That's why it's Time's Invention of the Year for 2006.
