Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada has been found guilty of corruption and jailed for life.

Mr Estrada was accused of embezzling about $80m (£42m) before he was forced from office by street protests in 2001.

He denies the allegations, accusing his successor Gloria Arroyo and Church leaders of conspiring against him.

There was tight security in the Philippine capital, Manila, ahead of the verdict, as Mr Estrada's supporters were kept away from the courthouse.

Analysts say that the fact that Mr Estrada will be spending more time behind bars is likely to anger the urban poor who make up the bulk of his support.

Journalists Fined Over Islam joke

A court in Casablanca has given two Moroccan journalists suspended sentences of three years for defaming Islam and breaching public morality.

The journalists' weekly magazine, Nichane, had published an article entitled How Moroccans laugh at religion, sex and politics.

The court banned publication of the magazine for two months and fined Driss Ksikes and Sanaa al-Aji about $8,000.

The journalists said the jokes they published were in common usage.

Their lawyer says they plan to appeal against the sentence.

The prosecutor had urged sentences of three to five years, saying journalists must balance liberties and responsibilities.

Their article had featured jokes about God, the prophets and the Moroccan king, which deeply insulted many ordinary Moroccans and their religion, says the BBC's Richard Hamilton in Casablanca.

The two journalists, backed by many international organisations, feel their prosecution was a blow to press freedom, says our correspondent.

Smurfs have been smurfing quite a stir since Belgian artist Peyo introduced them to the world on October 23, 1958. When Hanna-Barbera brought them to U.S. television sets in the early '80s, folks started accusing the sky-blue critters of being card-smurfing communists. They smurfed together in a commune-like setting, protecting themselves from Gargamel, a wretched capitalist who plotted to eat them or turn them into gold, depending on the episode. Some even believe that Karl Marx and Papa Smurf were separated at birth. (Nevermind that Papa's eternally 542 years old.) If the gossip wasn't about the Smurfs being commies, it was about their anti-feminist tendencies. Gargamel, after all, created the brunette Smurfette to wreak havoc on the village boys. Luckily, Papa smurfed a spell to pacify the lass. (Blonde locks and long lashes were just part of the makeover). The village smurfed over the blonde bombshell. And so did we. We couldn't get enough of Smurfette or the jolly Smurf dudes trying to impress her. We begged mom for Smurfberry Crunch, and us gals smurfed our hair obsessively to achieve our own Smurfette pompadour. Today, we suggest smurfing the politics in favor of singing: Happy Smurfday to you, enchanting village of blue.

The plight of these "night commuters" was documented in Invisible Children, a film by three San Diego college students. The history, politics, and religion of the LRA and its conflicts with both Uganda and southern Sudan are complex, and often inexplicable, affairs. In the end, however, the persistent question remains, stark and unignorable.

The attackers were reportedly two girls and three boy soldiers and eyewitnesses interviewed said they were Tongtong, a Sudanese nickname for the LRA. — The Monitor
The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), responsible for what is described as the second worst "forgotten" humanitarian emergency in the world, is blamed for the recent killing of 41 civilians and wounding of 15 in southern Sudan. Currently estimated at 2000 strong, the LRA abducts Ugandan Acholi children, both boys and girls, to form its ranks, an army of children that has forced 2 million (!) people into "internally displaced person" camps and has crippled Uganda's economy at a cost of US$100 million annually.
These five particular children, in dreadlocks (an LRA trademark), ambushed vehicles along highways outside Juba, Sudan where peace talks between LRA commanders and the Uganda government are ongoing. In response to the attacks, Uganda has banned vehicles from crossing the border both to and from Sudan. This closure comes at the beginning of the "return season", the time of year when Sudanese refugees return home now after the 21 year north-south civil war.
Joseph Kony, leader of the LRA, forged a syncretic religion from christianity, islam and and traditional african religions. Kony uses witchcraft rituals to brainwash the children to accept millenarianist beliefs and turn them against their parents and former neighbors. Because Kony's troops are child victims, humanitarian groups demand that the conflict be resolved peacefully. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Kony and four of his deputies in 2005 (the first warrants ever issued by the ICC) with charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder, rape, sexual slavery, and enlisting of children as combatants.

The Government is to ask university lecturers to spy on "Asian-looking" pupils and report Muslim students they suspect of involvement in Islamic extremism to police, it has been reported.

University bosses and lecturers reacted with anger and alarm last night over government plans to encourage academics to spy on their students. They said the measures, outlined in a leaked document obtained by the Guardian, were misplaced and likely to be counterproductive in the drive to root out extremist activity on university campuses.
