article, Georges Bataille’s notion of intimacy will be re-interpreted to show
that it has a role to play in the evolution of technology. The specifically
human form of intimacy can be experienced through the successful adoption of
technological devices that have the qualities necessary to fit in and work out
in our life context. If they manage to become part of our life, then we
experience them as projections of our psychophysical personality, and, as such,
they escape our positing, objectifying consciousness. Intimacy can be seen as
the organizing principle that shapes the evolution of technology towards an
ideal end that promises at least an approximation to the absolute intimacy that
is unique to the gods.

Introduction

According to Bataille, technology embodies the first act of a
consciousness that split the world into subjects and objects

Tags: georges bataille, intimacy, consciousness, technology

<clipSource>http://jetpress.org/v17/tomasi.htm</clipSource>

11 ways to browse through Flickr

clipped by: haraya

Clip Source: mashable.com

Give people an API and they start inventing crazy stuff all of a sudden. If people would spend their calories on transporting themselves to work by foot or bike instead, they wouldn't have to worry about the waist line and they would save a lot of time, money and carbon.
Gregg Fonarow of the University of California, Los Angeles, and his colleagues looked at the records of more than 100,000 patients hospitalised because their heart failure was worsening. They found that the fatter the person, the less likely they were to die during a week-long hospital stay (American Heart Journal, vol 153, p 74).

Fonarow suggests that fat people may cope better with heart failure because they have more metabolic reserves to draw on when the heart isn't pumping blood fast enough to meet the body's needs.

Tags: health, fat, study, medicine, heart, life, science, obesity, metabolism, body

<clipSource>http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn10992&feedId=online-news_rss20</clipSource>

Social Status Helps You Live Longer

clipped by: haraya

Clip Source: www.newscientist.com

Scientists who have won a Nobel prize live nearly two years longer than those who were merely nominated, according to a new study. The findings suggest that social status confers "health-giving magic", the researchers say.

Previous research has found a link between status and health in monkeys, but it has been difficult to investigate the link in humans because status often brings more wealth, which improves living standards and medical care.

Andrew Oswald and Matthew Rablen, economists at Warwick University in the UK, focused on Nobel prize winners "as an ideal group to study as the winners could be seen as having their status suddenly dropped on them".

The researchers studied 524 men – 135 winners and 389 nominees – in the competition for the physics and chemistry prizes between 1901 and 1950 – the cut-off point because the full list of nominees are kept secret for 50 years. They looked only at men to avoid differences in life span between sexes, and because the male winners provided a bigger sample size.

Like for like

Prize winners lived 1.4 years longer on average – or 77.2 years – than those who were nominated for the award. But when the survey was restricted to only comparing winners and nominees from the same country, the longevity gap widened, by about another eight months on average, the researchers found.

"Walking across that platform in Stockholm apparently adds about two years to a scientist's life-span. How status does this, we just don't know," Oswald says.

Though the prize money increased with time, the actual amount had no effect on the longevity of the recipient, he says. "Actually winning the Nobel prize was what counted," Oswald says.

Tags: life, health, science, society, scientists, research, nobel, prize, contest, medicine, wealth, lifestyle, environment, winners, competition, longevity

<clipSource>http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn10972&feedId=online-news_rss20</clipSource>

No One Dies of Old Age

clipped by: haraya

Clip Source: www.livescience.com

There are various ways of shuffling off this mortal coil, but people actually die from injury (such as a fall or car accident) or disease (such as cancer). No one dies of old age. Usually when a person is said to have died "of old age," it means that he or she succumbed to one of the diseases common in our later years.

While many older people do suffer from health problems, disease does not automatically accompany aging, and seniors are living longer and healthier than ever. Just as youth does not guarantee good health, old age does not guarantee poor health.

It is true that living cells have a finite life span, but that doesn't mean that the organism simply dies because the cells are old. Instead, genetic mutations, diseases, and damaging effects of the environment can foster a specific disorder or disease. As people get older, their cells simply don't work as well, and can't stave off disease as easily or heal as well as they once could. As a result, older people may die from injuries or diseases that a younger person would easily survive. But nothing dies from simply being old.

Tags: science, biology, man, environment, medicine, life, health, death, age, body, life span

<clipSource>http://www.livescience.com/mysteries/061114_old_age.html</clipSource>

Five Principles for Happiness in 2007

clipped by: haraya
clipper's remarks: I really like the fifth one.

Clip Source: finance.yahoo.com

What you need to do is create what I call the "Live Rich Factor" in your life. Now you're ready for a fresh start in 2007 -- a new beginning.

Principle 2: Get Connected with Your Truth

The hardest thing to do is be honest with yourself. Asking yourself some key questions will lead you to some amazing discoveries, and possibly motivate you to do what it takes to create the life you envision for yourself.

Principle 3: Stop Judging Yourself

Be nicer to yourself in 2007. Many people talk to themselves in a way they would never accept from a stranger, friend, or loved one. If this describes you, try stopping the negative conversations you have with yourself immediately.

Principle 4: Stop Judging Others

It's hard to be joyful when you're always judging others. In fact, it's close to impossible. Judging others creates a huge amount of stress in our lives. It affects our marriages and our relationships with our kids as well as the way we relate to friends, co-workers, and society in general.

We're not here to judge one another.

Principle 5 : Pursue Fun with a Vengeance

Why do we stop pursing fun as we get older? Fun shouldn't be squeezed into a few weeks of vacation each year. And it shouldn't be squeezed into the last chapter of your life when you "get to" retire. Fun deserves to be a part of your life now -- in 2007.

Tags: happiness, life, lifestyle, new year, list, living, people, reminder, change

<clipSource>http://finance.yahoo.com/columnist/article/millionaire/18930</clipSource>

When Life Becomes Scentless

clipped by: haraya
clipper's remarks:
The film Perfume portrays the world of a man who has an unparalleled, acute sense of smell. It is a story of 18th Century life in France, told in all its stinking glory, through repeated reference to smells - people's odours, street filth, country air, food and musky scents. A time and a world away from life for the 2% of people that researchers say lack the olfactory sense.

The causes range from severe head injuries, to viruses and nasal congestion conditions, to degenerative diseases including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Some suffer from anosmia, which means no sense of smell; hyposmia is a decreased ability; and dysosmia is when things smell differently than they should.

Our sense of smell is an underestimated life sense (albeit the basis of a hugely profitable perfume industry).

It plays a role in mental and physical health, emotion, sex and relationships. It helps people guard against bad or off food, and helps warn against dangerous situations.

When sight or hearing go, it is immediately obvious. With smell, its absence can take longer to sink in. Robert's went because of nasal polyps - protrusions that blocked the inside of his nose - cutting him off from the kind of world Suskind's anti-hero occupies.

And the scientists believe that they are still far from documenting all the different marine species. Advanced sonar equipment that can map oceanic areas 10,000 times larger than previously possible recently detected a shoal of eight million fish in a school the size of Manhattan off the coast of New Jersey. Images of the shoal revealed it pulsating, fragmenting and reforming as the fish moved through the water.

When the census is completed it will form a snapshot of ocean life that scientists will use as a reference to monitor the impact of the fishing industry and environmental change.

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

An ambitious attempt to draw up a census of life beneath the waves has revealed a clutch of exotic species and a shoal of fish which is the size of Manhattan island.
Research vessels dispatched to probe the depths of the world's oceans stumbled across an ancient shrimp, previously known only from fossil records, which was thought to have become extinct 50m years ago.

Nicknamed Jurassic shrimp, the creature was spotted on a sea mount near the Philippines and rivals the discovery of the coelacanth, a prehistoric fish now known to populate the waters off South Africa and Indonesia.

Scientists aboard another research vessel looking for life in the Nazare canyon in the sea off Portugal's coast spotted giant fragile microbes which protected themselves with plate-like shells made from mineral grains.

Other finds included the hairiest crab ever documented and a vibrant community of jellyfish and other creatures lurking in some of the darkest waters known, discovered when scientists drilled a hole through 700 metres (2,300ft) of Antarctic ice and lowered a camera into the depths.

The census was launched in 2001 to map life in the most under-explored environment on earth and uses half of the world's large research vessels and submersibles. Destined to finish in 2010, the £500m project involves 1,700 scientists in 73 countries.

"By 2010 we'll have a representative picture of what lives in the oceans from top to bottom and around the world," said Ron O'Dor, senior scientist on the project. "Everywhere we go we find more life than we'd imagined.
