Zittrain thinks we're seeing the end of the freewheeling Internet and PC era. He calls the technologies of today "tethered"

items like iPhones or many brands of DVR -- they're sterile to their owners, who aren't allowed to build software that runs on them. But they're generative to the companies that make them

worse than plain old sterile technologies. They allow for abuses undreamed of in the IBM mainframe era.

Zittrain's solution to the tethering problem is to encourage the existence of

people who work together to create open, untethered technologies and information repositories. They are the force that pushes back against companies that want to sterilize the Internet and turn it back into something that spits information at you

this is a good start, but there are a lot of problems with depending on communities

to fix a system created by corporate juggernauts

companies can create an incredibly oppressive tethering regime while still allowing users to think they have control.

The internet is a copy machine. At its most foundational level, it copies every action, every character, every thought we make while we ride upon it. In order to send a message from one corner of the internet to another, the protocols of communication demand that the whole message be copied along the way several times. IT companies make a lot of money selling equipment that facilitates this ceaseless copying. Every bit of data ever produced on any computer is copied somewhere. The digital economy is thus run on a river of copies. Unlike the mass-produced reproductions of the machine age, these copies are not just cheap, they are free.

When copies are super abundant, they become worthless.
When copies are super abundant, stuff which can't be copied becomes scarce and valuable.

When copies are free, you need to sell things which can not be copied.

Well, what can't be copied?

The Pew Internet Project's recent report, "Digital Footprints," has been receiving a lot of coverage regarding its statistics related to people searching for information about themselves online. Namely, the process of "googling" oneself has more than doubled in the last five years, from 22% to 47%, according to Pew data. Surprisingly, though, just 3% of respondents claim to check their digital footprints on a regular basis, while 74% have only checked their search results once or twice.

more and more I have become concerned over the possibility of incorrect or otherwise private information being posted online. In the past year, there have been several reports linking negative information found by potential employers in an online search to a lost job opportunity.

one of the most interesting takeaways from this report is that while people are certainly more aware of their virtual identities than they were five years ago, there still remains significant room to grow.

Andrew Keen’s website claims, without a hint of humility, that he’s “the leading contemporary critic of the Internet.” No kidding? The entire Internet? A curious reader might wonder whether such an all-inclusive battle is similar to taking on, say, “music” or “radio waves.” It is.

More specifically, Keen’s depressing book, The Cult of the Amateur: How Today’s Internet Is Killing Our Culture, laments techno-utopianism, free content, and the rise of citizen journalists, filmmakers, musicians, and critics as cultural arbiters. It is a book, in other words, of spectacular elitism.

His central argument is—to pinch a word he loves to use—seductive. He’s right that the Internet is littered with inane, vulgar, dimwitted, unedited, and unreadable content, much of it fueling outrageous conspiracy theories, odious partisan debates, mindless celebrity worship, and worse. And then there’s the stuff that’s not even entertaining.

A 17-year-old boy in northeastern China was so disappointed with the looks of a woman he met over the Internet that he hanged himself after seeing her face-to-face, state media reported Friday.

The unnamed teenager first contacted the woman -- known by her chat moniker "Qunjiaofeiyang", or "Flying Skirt" -- using the popular Chinese online messaging software QQ, Xinhua news agency said.

The girl described herself as a beautiful 19-year-old and the pair chatted on the Web for weeks before arranging a December 26 rendezvous in the nearby city of Mudanjiang, in far northeastern Heilongjiang province.

The boy arrived to discover the woman far less attractive than advertised and 10 years older than him, Xinhua said.

The boy immediately returned home, lost his appetite, and four days later hanged himself from a tree.

Library Pulls Plug On Internet Access

The Mt. Clemens Public Library has shut down Internet access on the three computers in the adult section, because people are looking up porn.

"We have children and young families who are in the library, and I don't feel that it's appropriate," library director Donald Worrell said . "It's very unfortunate that people who want to use the computers legitimately have to suffer."

He added that library computers have filters, but the law requires them to be turned off if a patron over 18 requests.

Worrell said the best solution was to discontinue Internet access until library attorneys can hammer out a policy. He doesn't know when computer access will return.

Ellen Frizzell of Mt. Clemens and her four children used to go online at the library, but now plan to go elsewhere.

The homemaker seemed resigned: "If they have to completely take out service altogether to control that, so be it. For children who don't have access to the Internet, that's a damper for them."

Web friends as important as real-world counterparts

A survey found 43% of online networkers from the US felt "as strongly" about their web community as they did about their real-world friends.

It also revealed net-users had made an average of 4.6 virtual pals this year.

The survey, from the US-based Center for the Digital Future, of 2,000 individuals forms part of a six-year study into attitudes to the web.

Each year, the University of Southern California researchers publish data tracking the changing opinions of the same American households to the internet.

On the results of their sixth report, Jeffrey Cole, director of the centre, said: "More than a decade after the portals of the worldwide web opened to the public, we are now witnessing the true emergence of the internet as the powerful personal and social phenomenon we knew it would become."

Social interaction on the web has become a phenomenon in recent years, with the rise of sites like MySpace and Bebo, and the development of virtual worlds such as Second Life.

However, the report also discovered virtual friendship is not confined to the PC - those surveyed had met an average of 1.6 of the friends they had made online in person.

Keeping in touch

It also found 40% of net-users were using the web to stay in contact with people, and 37.7% believed the internet was enabling them to communicate more with friends and family.

The survey also revealed 7.4% of those surveyed kept a blog, double the figure in 2003; and in that period, the number of people posting pictures online grew from 11% to 23.6%.

Mr Cole added: "The internet has become an essential source of entertainment, information and communication... However, in 2006, we are beginning to measure real growth and discover new directions for the internet as a comprehensive tool that Americans are using to touch the world."

The Cutting Edge Of Ivy League Students

A survey of 3,069 students on the campuses of Cornell University and Princeton University, has arrived at a conclusion that some might find shocking: Fully 17 percent of these Ivy League college students have cut, burned, carved or otherwise harmed themselves. Less than 7 percent have ever sought medical help for their self-inflicted injuries.

The study by researchers at Cornell and Princeton is billed as the largest study on self-injurious behavior (SIB) in the United States to date. "Self-injurious behavior is defined as inflicting harm to one's body without the obvious intent of committing suicide," Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self-Injurious Behaviors in the Family Life Development Center (FLDC) at Cornell and lead author of the study, said in a news release. SIB also may include such behaviors as ripping or pulling skin or hair, biting, bruising and breaking bones, she said.

They are also coming together on the Internet. "Internet message boards provide a powerful vehicle for bringing self-injurious adolescents together, and to a great extent, they provide a safe forum and a source of valuable support for teens who might otherwise feel marginalized and who may be struggling with shame," said Whitlock. However, while the majority of the postings are supportive in nature, some reinforce self-injury behaviors and could create a "social contagion" effect, the researchers warned.

The Internet Black Hole That Is North Korea

the stark realities of life in North Korea were perhaps most evident in a simple satellite image over the shoulder of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld during an Oct. 11 briefing. The image showed the two Koreas — North and South — photographed at night.

The South was illuminated from coast to coast, suggesting that not just lights, but that other, arguably more bedrock utility of the modern age — information — was pulsating through the population.

The North was black.

This is an impoverished country where televisions and radios are hard-wired to receive only government-controlled frequencies. Cellphones were banned outright in 2004. In May, the Committee to Protect Journalists in New York ranked North Korea No. 1 — over also-rans like Burma, Syria and Uzbekistan — on its list of the “10 Most Censored Countries.”

That would seem to leave the question of Internet access in North Korea moot.

At a time when much of the world takes for granted a fat and growing network of digitized human knowledge, art, history, thought and debate, it is easy to forget just how much is being denied the people who live under the veil of darkness revealed in that satellite photograph.

While other restrictive regimes have sought to find ways to limit the Internet — through filters and blocks and threats — North Korea has chosen to stay wholly off the grid.

Julien Pain, head of the Internet desk at Reporters Without Borders, a Paris-based group which tracks censorship around the world, put it more bluntly. “It is by far the worst Internet black hole,” he said.

Warner Music videos to be free on YouTube

Music videos from artists including Madonna are to be made available free on the popular video website YouTube, as part of a deal with Warner Music.

The agreement will see thousands of videos and interviews placed online on YouTube. It is not the first deal of its kind, as television broadcasters have been working with the site for some time. Capitol Records is also among the music companies to have embraced the site, but YouTube co-founder and chief executive Chad Hurley said the Warner deal was one of the most important he had ever made. "This is a real landmark for our company," he said.

YouTube carries more than 100m videos a day, but it is not popular with everyone. Last week another record label, Universal, said it was considering legal action against the site for copyright infringement.

The news of the Warner deal came as a music industry veteran yesterday warned record companies they had to act faster if they were to survive on the internet.
