The findings suggest that social status confers "health-giving magic", the researchers say.

Previous research has found a link between status and health in monkeys, but it has been difficult to investigate the link in humans because status often brings more wealth, which improves living standards and medical care.

Andrew Oswald and Matthew Rablen, economists at Warwick University in the UK, focused on Nobel prize winners "as an ideal group to study as the winners could be seen as having their status suddenly dropped on them".

The researchers studied 524 men – 135 winners and 389 nominees – in the competition for the physics and chemistry prizes between 1901 and 1950 – the cut-off point because the full list of nominees are kept secret for 50 years. They looked only at men to avoid differences in life span between sexes, and because the male winners provided a bigger sample size.

Like for like

Prize winners lived 1.4 years longer on average – or 77.2 years – than those who were nominated for the award. But when the survey was restricted to only comparing winners and nominees from the same country, the longevity gap widened, by about another eight months on average, the researchers found.

"Walking across that platform in Stockholm apparently adds about two years to a scientist's life-span. How status does this, we just don't know," Oswald says.

Though the prize money increased with time, the actual amount had no effect on the longevity of the recipient, he says. "Actually winning the Nobel prize was what counted," Oswald says.

Tags: life, health, science, society, scientists, research, nobel, prize, contest, medicine, wealth, lifestyle, environment, winners, competition, longevity

<clipSource>http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn10972&feedId=online-news_rss20</clipSource>

No One Dies of Old Age

clipped by: haraya

Clip Source: www.livescience.com

There are various ways of shuffling off this mortal coil, but people actually die from injury (such as a fall or car accident) or disease (such as cancer). No one dies of old age. Usually when a person is said to have died "of old age," it means that he or she succumbed to one of the diseases common in our later years.

While many older people do suffer from health problems, disease does not automatically accompany aging, and seniors are living longer and healthier than ever. Just as youth does not guarantee good health, old age does not guarantee poor health.

It is true that living cells have a finite life span, but that doesn't mean that the organism simply dies because the cells are old. Instead, genetic mutations, diseases, and damaging effects of the environment can foster a specific disorder or disease. As people get older, their cells simply don't work as well, and can't stave off disease as easily or heal as well as they once could. As a result, older people may die from injuries or diseases that a younger person would easily survive. But nothing dies from simply being old.

Tags: science, biology, man, environment, medicine, life, health, death, age, body, life span

<clipSource>http://www.livescience.com/mysteries/061114_old_age.html</clipSource>

Chinese people getting taller, heavier

clipped by: haraya

Clip Source: www.chinadaily.com.cn

Beijing - China as a nation has grown in stature since

China as a nation has grown in stature since unleashing its economy more than two decades ago but so have its people, who are getting taller and heavier, state media reported.(AFP" />

Chinese children are an average 6 cm (2.34 inches) taller and roughly 3 kg
(6.6 pounds) heavier than they were 30 years ago, Xinhua said, citing a
report released by the Ministry of Health on Saturday.

The average height of six-year-old boys grew from 112.3 centimeters in 1975
to 118.7 cm, according to the survey conducted in 2005.

Girls averaged 117.7 cm tall, 6.2 cm more than in 1975, the survey said. The
survey has been conducted every 10 years since 1975.

China's people suffered from decades of privation, but have seen incomes and
nutrition blossom more recently.

The survey polled 138,775 children in urban and suburban areas of nine major
cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.

The average weight of boys in 2005 was 21.7 kg, up 3 kg from 1975, while
girls averaged 20.8 kg -- 2.7 kgs heavier, Xinhua said.

Being better fed has brought problems, however, including an alarming rise in
obesity -- once unheard of in China -- and related illnesses such as diabetes.

Health officials have blamed the problem on reduced consumption of grains and
vegetables in favor of more fatty junk foods.

Saturday's report pointed out some adjustments made necessary by China's
growth spurt, including Beijing's move this year to raise the height under which
children get free public bus rides.

Despite the better nutrition in cities, countless children in China's
still-backward rural areas suffered from malnutrition, the report
noted.

Tags: asia, china, people, society, research, weight, height, chinese, health, children, nutrition, news

<clipSource>http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2006-12/31/content_772367.htm</clipSource>

Are you a Tofi? Jacobson of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and his doctoral student, Laura McLay. Their paper, published in the current issue of The Engineering Economist, calculates how much extra gasoline is used to transport Americans now that they have grown fatter. The answer, they said, is a billion gallons a year.

Their conclusion is in the same vein as a letter published last year in The American Journal of Public Health. Its authors, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, did a sort of back-of-the-envelope calculation of how much extra fuel airlines spend hauling around fatter Americans. The answer, they wrote, based on the extra 10 pounds the average American gained in the 1990’s, is 350 million gallons, which means an extra 3.8 million tons of carbon dioxide.

“People are out scouring the landscape for things that make obese people look bad,” said Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale.

Tags: obesity, health, society, people, environment, food, cartoon, life, humor, global warming

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/29/weekinreview/29kolata.html?_r=1&oref=slogin</clipSource>

10 Reasons To Drink More Water

clipped by: jarek69

Clip Source: projectririan.blogspot.com

I know you've heard this many times - "Drink more water!".
