LOS ANGELES - Mathematicians at UCLA have discovered a 13-million-digit prime number, a long-sought milestone that makes them eligible for a $100,000 prize.

The group found the 46th known Mersenne prime last month on a network of 75 computers running Windows XP. The number was verified by a different computer system running a different algorithm.

"We're delighted," said UCLA's Edson Smith, the leader of the effort. "Now we're looking for the next one, despite the odds."

Primes are numbers like three, seven and 11 that are divisible by only two whole positive numbers: themselves and one.

Mersenne primes — named for their discoverer, 17th-century French mathematician Marin Mersenne — are expressed as 2P-1, or two to the power of "P" minus one. P is itself a prime number. For the new prime, P is 43,112,609.

Large prime numbers serve as the foundation for the cryptological techniques used to keep online transactions and coded communications secure

There are many cases which the doctor cannot cure without committing himself. When important matters are at stake, it makes all the difference whether the doctor sees himself as a part of the drama, or cloaks himself in his authority.

The doctor is effective only when he himself is affected. "Only the wounded physician heals." But when the doctor wears his personality like a coat of armor, he has no effect.

He wanted to be an analyst. I said to him, "Do you know what that means? It means that you must first learn to know yourself. You yourself are the instrument. If you are not right, how can the patient be made right? If you are not convinced, how can you convince him? You yourself must be the real stuff. If you are not, God help you! Then you will lead patients astray. Therefore you must first accept an analysis of yourself.

A few weeks before the jump I check into the research wing of Stony Brook University Hospital to undergo two days of testing so that Mujica-Parodi can get a baseline reading of my stress level. She's particularly interested in a brain region called the amygdala, part of the system that regulates the fear response. She believes that if she can understand the dynamics of the amygdala, she will have found the holy grail of stress research: a way to predict how a person will perform under alarming conditions by examining him beforehand in the calm of a laboratory. That ability would be of obvious interest to the military, which is why the Navy is backing her research. It could also prove useful in recruiting and training anyone else who might face danger in the line of duty.

While this sounds like a new phenomenon, the term was first used in 1970 by Alvin Toffler, an author, who warned that the human brain did not have the capacity to take in, interpret and store increasingly large volumes of information.

• More recently, a psychiatrist at King's College London found that information overload can harm concentration just as much as marijuana, with men twice as likely to be distracted as women.

• Research found information overload can reduce a person's ability to focus just as much as losing a night's sleep.

• Psychologists who study visual processing and decision-making have shown the brain can cope with only about five messages at any one time.

BRITAIN is becoming a nation of "ninfomaniacs", with each adult absorbing around 13 pieces of new information a day, ranging from pop gossip about Amy Winehouse to the latest credit crunch news, research released today reveals.

Some people are so desperate for new information they scour television and the internet, pushing their daily quota to 20 items of news a day.

Researchers who interviewed more than 1,000 people said modern adults were exposed to more information than ever from newspapers, magazines, television, radio and, increasingly, the internet.

But last night experts on human memory and organisational behaviour said bombarding the brain with information provided no guarantee that facts were fully understood or retained.

"People who research into learning differentiate between deep learning and 'strategic' learning – otherwise known as 'shallow' learning. Shallow learning tends to consist of quick facts and soundbites which we need to keep up to speed in so many areas.

Heart Robot has a beating heart, a breathing belly, and sensors that respond to movement, noise and touch. Cuddle him, and he seems to soak up the affection. His limbs become limp, his eyelids lower, his breathing relaxes, and his heart beat slows down.

But if he is given a violent shake, or shouted at, he gets upset. He flinches, his hands clench, his breathing and heart rate speed up, and his eyes widen.

Heart Robot, created by scientists at the University of the West of England in Bristol, was designed to explore how humans react to a machine that appears to show feelings.

It’s interesting to see people’s responses. I tend to have as much of an uncanny valley experience as the average person. I just recognize it when it happens.

(The Uncanny Valley is a phenomenon in which, the closer to human an artificial being gets, it actually becomes more strange and repulsive to an actual human.)

clipper's remarks: Why would anyone want to refer to themselves as a pit bull with lipstick? Is that some kind of endearing quality? Is that some kind of characteristic we want in our leadership? I just don't get it. Pit bulls are notorious for attacking innocent bystanders (often children) with fierce vengeance - that's certainly their stigma at least. So why in the world is it something that a potential President of the United States would be proud of comparing herself to? Personally, i find it very scary that she would say that and i honestly find it scary that a room full of people would stand up and cheer the idea.

1 16-oz. pkg. frozen blueberries, thawed, or 2 cups fresh blueberries

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup lemonade concentrate, thawed

1 1/2 cups ginger ale

Bring blueberries, 1/2 cup water and sugar to a boil over medium heat. Cover, simmer 5 minutes; let cool. Purée mixture, then stir in lemonade and ginger ale. Pour in 9x9-inch baking pan; freeze 1/2 hour. Remove; scrape ice crystals into mixture. Refreeze. Scrape every 20 to 30 minutes.

Mound slush into 6 dishes; serve.
