Japanese look at fingers as credit cards

An employee of Hitachi demonstrates a cash machine using a biometric security system to read the user's fingers during a press conference in Tokyo in 2005. Taking the idea of a cashless society to a new level, the Japanese company has said it will try out a way to let customers pay simply by scanning their finger.

The system uses biometric technology to identify the veins on a person's finger, which can then serve as a credit card or ATM card.

Electronics maker Hitachi Ltd., which developed the technology with credit card maker JCB Co. Ltd., said the system was the ultimate in security.

"The growing use of credit cards is leading banking institutions to introduce reliable security based on biometrics to prevent fraud," Hitachi said in a statement.

Step 1

If you are standing - turn slightly and rest your weight on one foot. It may FEEL goofy, but you WILL look better.

If you are sitting – angle to one side or the other.

Step 2

Lean slightly toward the camera – Leaning slightly toward the camera adds interest, dimension, and a natural look to a photo. Think of having a long neck like a gazelle, and tilt your chin down just a bit to avoid the appearance of a double chin and also to prevent the camera from getting a view right up your nostrils.

Step 3

Models are taught to change state by developing a ‘trigger.’ So when they are about to have their picture taken, even if they are in a crummy mood, they can go from level 1 to level 5 in a heart beat. Firing a trigger is a reminder to do the things that make you look good. Believe it or not, THE most successful trigger we found over the years was called the ‘rear cheek squeeze.’ It’s really cool because it’s inconspicuous. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like; you squeeze the cheeks of your rear end together. Don’t make fun of it until you try it. To see it’s effectiveness try this experiment. Ask someone to sit on a chair and then ask them to squeeze their cheeks together. I have not met ONE person who doesn’t immediately smile and say something like, okay, now what?

Step 4

Learn to ¾ smile – People just don’t like pictures of themselves with huge smiles. Smiling too big exposes gums and causes your eyes to turn into slits.

Step 5

Never look directly at the lens – ALWAYS, look slightly ABOVE the lens.

Hey Rob,

I've been a long-time reader, and, in part, thanks to your amazing creations, I realised the magic of PVC piping!

At work, out department decided to do 80s Trivial Pursuit as our theme. I decided to be Elliot from ET.

And the iconic image is the hooded youngster with ET in his bike basket. The back and front of the bike is done out of PVC pipes and silver paint, while ol' ET himself is actually just a carved Styrofoam face glued onto a paper cone.

I sure hope I can out-pedal the feds!

If the Selk'bag had been thought of years ago it would seem we were taking a step back if someone invented the conventional sleeping bag now. We no more have to imitate an insulated maggot when camping, instead we can just be insulated with the convenience of mobility.

We all like to be comfortable when we sleep and very few of us actually sleep like a mummy, so it would seem a bit silly to sleep in something that restricted our movement for an activity most of us spend 30% of our lives doing. So why it has taken so long to invent the Selk'bag, we don't know.

The fact that bilinguals aren't forever spurting out words from the wrong language implies there's some kind of switch.

in 2007, brain surgeons reported evidence for a language switch when their cortical prodding with an electrode caused two bilingual patients to switch languages suddenly and involuntarily.

On the other hand, there's good evidence that languages are integrated in the bilingual mind.

bilinguals are faster at naming an object when the word for that object is similar or the same in the two languages they speak (e.g. ship/schip in English and Dutch).

even when bilinguals read sentence after sentence in their native tongue, access to words in their second language remains open, rather than switched off, thus having an effect on the way the native language is processed.

"Becoming a bilingual means one will never read the newspaper again in the same way," they concluded. "It changes one of people's seemingly most automatic skills, namely, reading in one's native language."
