A new report says that we waste three hours a day faffing around, doing nothing in particular

The survey was carried out by the Learning and Skills Council, who, not surprisingly, argued we should instead use those three hours to Learn some Skills.

I beg to differ.

Faffing is when we disconnect from the matrix and idle for a while, like a car. Our body and spirit know deep down that human beings were not made for constant toil so subconsciously creates space through the mechanism of faffing.

Faffing of course does not fit the programme. We are supposed to be busy, productive citizens.

Clearly these sorts of ideals are designed to make us faffers feel bad. Well, don't.

Faffing is completely harmless, whereas its opposite - dynamic, purposeful activity - is often very harmful. Faffers do not tend to kill people or make them work 12-hour days or sell them shoddy merchandise or lend them vast sums of money that they cannot pay back.

carp kites which are flown for this festival are called 'koinobori'

They symbolise success due to the carp's long life and golden colour and are also supposed to drive away evil spirits. They are believed to represent strength and determination of spirit in the same way the carp travels against the current. In some houses, a carp is flown for each family member with the father's being the largest at the top down to the youngest child's at the bottom.

Record-breaking Mentos and Coke eruptions in Belgium

It was to be one of the biggest science experiments ever seen yet there was not a bunson burner or test tube in sight.

Around 1,500 students kitted out in waterproof ponchos discovered exactly what happens when you drop a mint sweet into a bottle of Coca Cola, in an attempt to break a world record.

The students, from Belgium, tried to out-fizz the previous record for so-called Mentos fountains by simultaneously putting Mentos mints into bottles of the soft drink.

The resultant chemical reaction shot hundreds of streams of carbonated soda into the air.

The explosive record-breaking event was held in Ladeuzeplein square in Leuven, Belgium.

This paper presents a theory of humor, that certain psychological state which tends to produce laughter. The theory states that humor is fully characterized by three conditions, each of which, separately, is necessary for humor to occur, and all of which, jointly, are sufficient for humor to occur. The conditions of this theory describe a subjective state of apparent emotional absurdity, where the perceived situation is seen as normal, and where, simultaneously, some affective commitment of the perceiver to the way something in the situation ought to be is violated. This theory is explained in detail and its logical properties and empirical consequences are explored. Recognized properties of humor are explained (incongruity, surprise, aggression, emotional transformation, apparent comprehension difficulty, etc.). Go into any store or turn on a TV and you will immediately be bombarded with products that are designed to save your precious time. Take your supermarket's selection of pre-sliced vegetables and fruits for instance. I mean, who really has time these days to slice their own apples? For that matter, why guide the vacuum cleaner yourself when there are new, automatic ones that suck up the dirt on their own?

My question is: what are people really doing with all these saved seconds and minutes? I am willing to bet that most of them are spent watching television or surfing the internet. Ironically, some become so engrossed in reality television that they fail to seize, or even grasp, their very own reality.

Why do we need these distractions? Because, let's face it: modern western society is a boredom culture.

Three years after tsunami, through the lenses of children

This month the Indonesian government dedicated the 100,000th new home in Aceh Province, three years after the towering waves of a tsunami crashed ashore in one of the deadliest natural disasters in history.

Roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, seaports and airstrips have also been built in Aceh, and most of the displaced population have found new homes.

Similar progress has been made in Sri Lanka, Thailand and other nations around the rim of the Indian Ocean, where the radiating waves that followed an earthquake off the Indonesian coast took 260,000 lives on the morning of Dec. 26, 2004.

In one such program, the American Red Cross distributed disposable cameras to about 80 children in Aceh and in Sri Lanka and told them to focus on what is happy in their lives.

Although love was the top choice overall and the number one choice for women, antidisestablishmentarianism was the top choice for men and the ninth most favourite word on the list.

Regionally, Welsh contributors favoured the word "cwtch" (cuddle) and Scots favoured "numpty" (an abbreviation of "numbskull").

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's three favourite words are love, serendipity and family, according to a charity effort to build a "wall of words".

Telecommunications giant BT and children's charity I CAN have already built a mile long "wall" from thousands of online submissions to their Internet site www.wallofwords.org.uk and are hoping to complete a second mile.

Visitors to the Web site submit their favourite word and the reasons why. The wall is made from virtual bricks represented by each word submitted. BT has already donated 50,000 pounds to I CAN on completion of the first mile and is offering prizes to contributors for the second mile.

It's not surprising that a nation which has seen a lot of slate grey skies over the winter chose sunshine as its fourth most favourite word or that a people famed for their stiff upper lips chose smile as number 6 and happy as number 10.
