Some dogs are extremely sensitive and as soon as one flea has hopped on the scratching starts! On some breeds, and if there are quite a lot of fleas you may be able to see them moving around on your dogs belly. If your pet has black and white grains in its fur, pick some out and add some water - if the black particles turn red then they are flea faeces - the white particles are flea eggs!

Flea bites can cause bacterial skin infections and flea allergy dermatitis - a very common skin disorder in dogs. If fleas are left untreated dogs can develop a hypersensitive allergy to the saliva of the flea - this gets worse over the years and can result in the use of cortisone. Very heavy flea infestations in small dogs or puppies can result in anaemia.

My wife started complaining that if she did not get to sleep before I did she was kept awake by the horrendous noise I was making! I thought she was exaggerating until we went on holiday with some friends of ours, they were sleeping on the opposite side of the cabin from us and they could still hear me! I must say I was a bit sheepish in the morning when I realised my wife had been telling the truth!

I tried a few snoring aids: a snoring pillow – I didn’t want to buy one just in case it didn’t work so I constructed my own from some foam. The trouble was I could not actually fall asleep on it so it did work, but only because I never fell asleep!

I tried those funny sticky strips that are meant to open your nostrils up and let in more air, Breathe Right I think they were called, but they did not make any difference either.

When I visited my doctor about my anxiety attacks, she suggested medication, either tranquilisers or anti depressants. But I prefer to take as little as possible in the way of medicines, and will choose a natural approach if I can.

This means I tried things such as relaxation techniques where you learn to meditate and use breathing exercises to relax your muscles and relieve tension. Correct breathing is also meant to ease hyperventilation, a symptom of panic attacks caused by rapid breathing.

Social anxiety disorder which is where you suffer from anxiety specifically when you are in a social situation of some kind. This could include going to a party, going to a class or even just going to work if there are a number of people there.

Phobias are the fear of either a certain situation or a certain thing. Some of the more well known phobias are aerophobia – the fear of flying, arachnaphobia – the fear of spiders, or Nyctophobia – fear of the dark. Many phobias defy logic, you know the fear makes no sense but you still cannot stop it from happening. My friend Evie has a phobia about lizards, she knows they cannot hurt her but it does not stop her from being scared of them!
