Medicine Wheel teachings are among the oldest of First Nations people and are based on the seven directions (North, East, South West, Father Sky, Mother Earth, Centre.

They create a holistic foundation for human behaviour and interaction; the teachings are about walking the earth in a peaceful and good way; they assist in helping to seek healthy minds (North) strong inner spirits (South), inner peace (West), strong, healthy bodies (East). A Medicine Wheel can best be described as a mirror within which everything about the human condition is reflected back to you. Among other things, It requires courage, honesty and trust to look into the mirror and really see yourself because some of it is painful, while others joyful and reflective. However, it is ultimately facing the pain that makes you stronger.

he term "Medicine" as it is used by First Nations people does not refer to drugs or herbal remedies.

East is where the sun rises. The eastern spirit of sun or fire brings warmth and light. It is the place of beginnings. Its light brings wisdom. It is the power of knowledge.

South is the sun at its highest point. It is the direction from where warm winds blow. South is the spirit of earth, the power of life. It represents peace and renewal.

West is the spirit of water. It is the direction from which darkness comes. It is the power of change, the place of dreams, introspection and the unknown. The west signifies purity and strength.

North is the spirit of wind. The cold wind blows from the north. It is the power of wisdom. Here we take time to reflect on what we began in the east, in the morning, in our youth.

When a Native American prays to the four directions, it is a prayer to the spirits of the world, to life and the Great Spirit that encompasses the four directions and everything that is. The Medicine Wheel is a symbol that incorporates the four directions. Its spokes point east, south, west, and north. The four quarters are colored red, yellow, black, and white representing the races of man, the seasons, and the stages of life from childhood to old age. The circle is the earth, the moon and the planets. It is the circle of life and all creation.

The simplicity of the symbol is profound. It is four directions. One could divide the world into 8 points of a compass, 360 degrees, or an infinite number of directions, but four is perfect. We humans KNOW four directions. We see forward, but not back, and facing forward we have two sides. Four directions are part of our biology and our psychology. They are archetypes of the highest order. As such they are powerful carriers of symbolic meaning.

The four directions are examined here within the context of the animal totems. Each direction has its own special characteristic and meaning. When the animals are seen coming from or going to a particular direction, the depth of meaning can be enhanced. This is another way to tune into the subtle language of animals. Intuitions and general knowledge should help you in discerning this unique relationship.

There are hidden qualities and forces of nature that we can access if we are attuned to the natural forces around us. In this section, we can learn some of the natural language the animal kingdom is telling us. The animals express the spirit nature of that species and exemplify qualities we can learn from. They are psychological and spiritual symbols that convey to us qualities we are needing or lacking in our daily lives.

Carl Jung termed "archetypes" as primordial symbols of the "collective unconscious". Animal totems are archetypes that work with the subconscious mind, tapping into the energy that is present in all things. Totems can be seen as channels or frequencies on a radio depending on the need of the individual. Our electromagnetic energy field taps into that frequency. However, the key to understanding this language is being perceptive and aware of our surroundings.
