Using homemade lab equipment and the wealth of scientific knowledge available online, these hobbyists are trying to create new life forms through genetic engineering - a field long dominated by Ph.D.s toiling in university and corporate laboratories.

You would not suggest giving a teen who has just maxed out their first credit card more credit so they could somehow spend their way out of the financial hole they have made, nor will this approach work for a business or a nation.

If you are unable to pay your debts, you are insolvent. In some cases, credit can help you bridge a "low" time. If, however, this credit only increases debt you still cannot afford, then the inevitable has merely been postponed.

The same mistakes that were made during the Great Depression are being made now. The call to prop up prices will grow to a din as the self-interests of businesses push themselves on the Federal Reserve and Treasury.

The business and economics establishment will soon call for a new New Deal,

and respun to the unwitting public, and the years that follow will be ones of pain, high prices, and a real fall in the standard of living.

Melamine is an industrial chemical that has sickened hundreds of thousands of children in China and killed babies and pets across the world. It has no place in the food supply whatsoever. For these health agencies that are supposed to be serving the public to now claim that a person can "safely" eat 13.6 mg of melamine per day, every day, is simply outrageous. It is a betrayal of the very public these agencies are supposed to serve and protect.

In other words, the health authorities of the world are now setting food safety standards in precisely the same way that a fifth-grade takes a history quiz… by guessing!

I have a radical idea: How about setting a standard that would require no industrial chemicals in the food supply?

And why is that so radical anyway? Shouldn't that just be common sense? Why are the FDA and WHO shoving chemicals down our throats and insisting they're all safe to eat?

Why have our food safety agencies become pushers of industrial chemicals?

Offshoring and the Auto Industry

The U.S. government is about to kick $15 billion over to the U.S. auto industry. And what we have seen with all of the bailout cases thus far -- from AIG to Citibank -- is that that amount is probably just a down payment on a future bigger draw.

Ben Bernanke's Pretense of Knowledge

In response to the meltdown of financial institutions, unprecedented power has been unleashed by the federal government. Between actions by the Federal Reserve, the TARP, guarantees made by the FDIC, and other direct bailouts, the total comes to nearly $8 trillion.

All of this monetary pumping hasn't put anyone to work. The labor department reports that 533,000 jobs were lost last month.

But the argument is that we must be patient with our wise men at the Fed and the Treasury.

After all, Ben Bernanke is an expert on the Great Depression, we're told over and over. He knows what to do to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Bernanke and company are making matters worse by endlessly inflating and bailing out dysfunctional firms. The result will be more unemployment, not less. But not-so-bashful Ben is arrogant enough to believe that he can step on the monetary gas, make things all better, and then return the Fed balance sheet to normal (whatever that is).

Financial Crisis—Call for a Steady-State Econom

The growing meltdown of the U.S. financial sector is a wake-up call to all of us that an economy based on infinite growth within a finite system, mother earth, will eventually overshoot, breakdown, and fail. The only question is when, and how much will our infinite growth economy and culture degrade the earth’s resilience before it stops. What we are really talking about is what will be left after our rush to consume the planet is over.

Invest in some good black dirt in a community of like-minded people. You are better off in a yurt on good land that you own than you are in a house or apartment that you don’t own.

MODESTO, California (CNN) -- The photograph became an icon of the Great Depression: a migrant mother with her children burying their faces in her shoulder. Katherine McIntosh was 4 years old when the photo was snapped. She said it brought shame -- and determination -- to her family.

With the nation sinking into tough economic times and analysts saying the current economic crisis is the worst since the Great Depression, McIntosh says if there's a lesson to be learned from her experience it is to save your money and don't overextend yourself.

She says she'll never forget the lessons of her hard-working mother, who died at the age of 80 in 1983. Her gravestone says: "Migrant Mother: A Legend of the strength of American motherhood."
