My office is above the garage, a five-yard commute every morning, and I think the subliminal proximity of tools and gardening equipment is an aid to productivity. I'm tidy, except when immersed in a project, which is when the cups, pistachio shells and half-eaten meals pile up. I look out on to trees, until it gets dark and they look back at me. Then it's time to knock off.

In praise of Netscape Navigator

The internet bubble started pumping up when Netscape was launched on the market. During its first day of trading, August 9 1995, its shares came close to tripling in value. Irrational exuberance famously followed, but there was good reason for the excitement about Netscape's Navigator. The easy-to-use internet browser gave ordinary human beings their first-ever window on to the world wide web.

Before long Explorer was everywhere, and Navigator withered away. In 1998 Netscape was bought out, in 2003 many of its staff were laid off, and - as of today - Navigator is no longer being supported at all. But out of its ashes Firefox has arisen, developed by redundant Netscape staff. Along with other browsers, such as Flock, it is giving web users a choice. Its hour may have passed, but Navigator should be remembered with awe for having untangled the web.

Once again I’m seeing Slawesome listed in a “W2.0″ list, this for a site that hasn’t functioned for me for quite a while. It’s a great site when working, and I used to use it a lot. Have you used it successfully recently? I contacted the site creators awhile back and was told that they had moved on to other projects and didn’t have the time or interest in fixing and maintaining it.
I just checked it again after seeing it in your list, and still cant get it to work.

Y Combinator startup Heroku, which has been in private beta since October, is coming out today with more details about how it’s out to ease the development and deployment of Ruby on Rails (RoR) applications.

There are two sides to Heroku’s offering. The first is a completely in-browser development environment where RoR programmers can build their apps instead of doing so with software on their own computers. Relative to other programming languages, Ruby and the Rails framework can be particularly onerous just to install and configure. Heroku wants both amateur and advanced programmers to get coding right away by making RoR development possible with any browser-equipped computer.

Song

The bridle-path, the river bank,
and where they crossed I took a length
of hazel bark, and carved a boat
no bigger than a fish, a trout,
and set it down and saw it float,
then sink. And where it sank
an inch of silver flesh declared itself
against the sun. Then it was gone.

And further south, beyond the bridge,
I took a nest of cotton grass
and flint to make a fire. Then watched
a thread of smoke unhook a pair
of seed propellers from a sycamore
which turned together and became
a dragonfly that drew the smoke
downstream. But the fire would not light.

Then at night, the house at the mouth
of the river. Inside, a fish,
a trout, the ounces of its soft
smoked meat prepared and on a plate.
I sat down there and ate. It is
the way of things, the taking shape
of things, beginning with their names;
secrets told in acts of sunlight,

The closest his family came to religion was the Star of David on top of the Christmas tree, so what happened when AJ Jacobs decided to tell only the truth, wear no mixed fibres, stone adulterers and live the Bible to the letter?

I've read bits and pieces of the Bible before, but never the whole thing, straight through from Genesis to Revelation. So that's what I do for four weeks, five hours a day. As I read, I type into my PowerBook every rule, every guideline, every suggestion, every nugget of advice I find. When I finish, I have a very long list. It runs to 72 pages.

I have chosen September 1 to start my project and, from the moment I wake up, the Bible consumes my life. I can't do anything without fearing I'm breaking a biblical law. It begins when I open my closet to get dressed. The Bible forbids men to wear women's clothing (Deuteronomy 22:5), so that comfortable college sweatshirt is off limits. It was once my wife's.

Stars - Canadian indie band

Stars is a Canadian progressive indie pop band. Originally formed in Toronto in 2000 by vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman, the band relocated to New York City and then subsequently to Montreal.
The band also includes singer-guitarist Amy Millan and bassist Evan Cranley. Drummer Pat McGee has toured with the band for years, despite not appearing on their albums until the release of Set Yourself On Fire. Violinist Genevieve Walker and guitarist Steve Ramsey (of Young Galaxy) have toured with the band in the past; neither are joining the band on their current tour, which features Alan Snoddy on guitar.
