Boise man survives getting partially sucked out of airplane

Chris Fogg, who lives near Boise, is a critical-care nurse with an air ambulance company. He said he was flying with a patient from Twin Falls, Idaho, to Seattle last Wednesday when he got out of his seat on a two-engine turbo prop to fetch a water bottle.

When he sat back down he heard a loud boom and the window next to him exploded. He hadn't yet buckled his seat belt, and his head and his right arm were sucked out of the window.

"My left hand was on the ceiling and was holding me in, and my knees were up against the wall," said Fogg. He said he pushed as hard as he could and got enough air between his chest and the window to break the seal.

He fell back into his seat, blood pouring from his head. He said the pilot knew the plane had gone into rapid decompression but didn't know about the broken window, so he put the airplane into a dive to a safe altitude of 10,000 feet.

clipper's remarks: While I'm not interested in buying an iPhone (it's not a good fit for how I use mobile devices), I'm excited about it because it will cause a paradigm shift in how U.S. consumers view cell phones. I believe the iPhone will broaden the U.S. market and create greater demand for other high-end phones from Samsung, Sony-Ericsson and Nokia.

“Tech-wise, the iPhone is not so advanced,” said S. Jay Yim, vice president of overseas marketing at Pantech. “But Apple makes up for that in content and software. As handsets look more like PCs, software gets more important.”

Indeed, Dr. Yim said that riding on Apple’s coattails may turn out to be the best business strategy for Pantech, which recently underwent a bank-led revamping. He said the hype around iPhone may open more Americans to the idea of paying more for cellphones, including the function-packed phones that Korean makers excel at building.

“In the past, U.S. consumers were unwilling to pay $300 for a phone,” Dr. Yim said. “If Apple can change their buying habits, then that would be good for us, too.”

Flaming SUV rams Glasgwo Airport terminal building

Two men rammed a flaming Jeep Cherokee into the main terminal of Glasgow airport Saturday, crashing into the glass doors at the entrance in what appeared to be the third attempted terror attack on Britain in two days, witnesses said.

Police wrestled the two men to the ground — one of them engulfed in flames — arresting both and taking one to the hospital.

There were no reports of injuries but the airport — Scotland's largest — was evacuated and all flights suspended, a day after British police thwarted a plot to bomb central London, discovering two cars abandoned with loads of gasoline, gas canisters and nails. Hundreds fled screaming from the terminal as one of the men poured gasoline over the Jeep and tried to force it further inside the terminal, one witness said.

Following yesterday’s rollout of Apple’s iPhone on AT&T’s wireless mobile phone network, many once-excited customers found themselves frustrated and disappointed after activation-related delays prevented use of their new $499 and $599 devices.

Discussions on Apple’s support forms now describe quoted wait times of “up to 24 hours” for activation, as well as numerous other issues relating to conversion of Individual Plans to Family Plans. iLounge’s editors are currently attempting to get activation issues resolved with 2 of our 7 total iPhones, and will update this article as appropriate.

Before you toast the findings, remember that the study was done in test tubes. So it's too soon to count on a glass of wine to chase your cavities away.

The iPhone will reset consumers' expectations about cellphones, said Thomas Thornton, a cognitive psychologist at Perceptive Sciences, an Austin research firm that tests mobile products.

Competitors taking cues from the iPhone are adding features like larger color touchscreens, user-friendly Web browsers and high-capacity music players to their phones. Verizon Wireless is planning to roll out updated phones with similar components. Last week, Sprint released its Mogul phone, with an extra-large screen and a WiFi connection. It is planning a music phone aimed at teenagers this fall.

Phones that double as music players, cameras and Web browsers have been on the market for more than two years, including Verizon Wireless's Chocolate phone and T-Mobile's Sidekick. But the iPhone's simple design, coupled with the user-friendly reputation of Apple's brand, is the biggest draw, McGuire said.

Bill Plummer, vice president of Nokia’s multimedia group in North America, disagreed with the assertion that the iPhone would bring fundamental change to the market. He said Nokia already sold high-end phones with a wide range of functions, including the N95, which has a five-megapixel camera and a hard drive to store and play music. The phone works on either the AT&T or T-Mobile network and sells for $749.

The iPhone, he argued “is an evolution of the status quo.”

According to an ad... er, story that ran in the Wall Street Journal today, the domain name/business known as Business.com is on the block and could fetch as much as $400-million. Where did the paper come up with that number? Good question. The reporter says that it came from "people familiar with the matter," which could mean anything from "the lawyer brokering the deal" to "my neighbour, who is in the domain-parking business."

European regulators have cleared use of mobile phones and BlackBerry devices for passengers while flying, Airbus announced Tuesday.

Approval by the European Aviation Safety Agency means that, from September, passengers aboard Airbus aircraft outfitted with the OnAir system will be able to send and receive phone calls, SMS messages and e-mail messages while flying at altitudes above 3,000 meters, or 9,840 feet.
