The Hassle: I'm trying to resist moving to Vista. How can I make XP perform like the new Windows OS?

The Fix(es): You can be a holdout (like me) and use a few XP-based freebies that do a surprisingly good job of emulating some of Vista's fancy graphical features. The first three apps listed below are my favorites. You can find all of the free tools and more online at "Add Vista Features to XP."

Copernic Desktop Search: Vista's search is fast and smart--and so is Copernic's, with keyword, file content, Boolean, and wildcard searches. If you don't like the look and feel of Copernic, Google Desktop makes a good substitute.

Desktop Sidebar: Vista has a handy Windows sidebar with calendars, calculators, a quick link to your media player, and RSS feeds. Desktop Sidebar offers similar features, with zillions of add-ons, including a file browser, a weather summary, news updates, and an e-mail checker. Too complicated for you? Then try the simpler LaunchBar Commander, which lets you create multiple on-screen panels (called docks) for launching various applications and documents.

Vista Start Menu SE: This utility creates a fair imitation of Vista's Start menu, but adds functions that Vista lacks--built-in shortcut keys to frequently used Windows functions such as Reboot, Switch Users, and Hibernate. Another great alternative for organizing apps and files is JetStart Free; it's faster than Vista Start Menu SE, but less fancy. (Choose just one of these tools.)

Folder Marker: Customize your folder icons and icon backgrounds with Vista icons. Folder Marker is a snap to use, and you can visit Horizon Software to download a bunch of Vista icons. (Choose icons of the Ico file type.)

Web 2.0 Buttons with Photoshop

Web 2.0 style buttons

Nowadays Web 2.0 style becomes more popular. Every day tons of sites which has simple, bright and very interesting things, appear in Network. There are no standards about creating any Web 2.0 elements, but we have several typical features, for example and clean colors, many gradients.

Today I want to show you how to create Web 2.0 styled button using Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Open the Photoshop, create new document for the button.
Create shape for future button using Rounded Rectangle tool on toolbar, specify round radius.
Right click on rectangle layer in Layers palette, choose Blending Options.
Set the Gradient Overlay effect parameters. I have following color of first and second thumb: 434343, third – 000000.
You can find Stroke effect parameters below. Stroke color is 363636.
Set the Inner Glow effect options.
As the result you will get following image:
Create rectangle using Rounded Rectangle tool, it will be used as button glare.
Right click on “glare” layer, choose Rasterize Layer.
Click Edit in Quick Mask Mode on toolbar.
Choose Gradient Tool, create gradient like following:
After leaving quick mask mode, you will get selection area. Click Delete button.
Add layer with text “Entries RSS” and RSS icon. Set Drop Shadow effect parameters.

Now you got following button:

After changing different effects parameters, adding or changing elements, I got following buttons:

Glue is a new service by Squad that lets users publish and share content on the web using a mobile device or web browser. It allows you to upload photos, publish news and share your Glue on any website, blog, or community profile (ie: MySpace). You can look at it as a miniature news publishing tool. The way it works is simple: Create an account, add news, and do what you want with the content. Now, rather than Glue providing you with a website showing your content, it offers publishing options which you can use to get the content on your own website or profile. Available publishing options include: Flash, JavaScript, RSS, PHP, ASP, and XML. The Flash and JavaScript options are ideal for users that do not know how to program requiring you to only place a small snippet into your website. But for those of you who do know how to program, Glue is nice enough to offer complete code in PHP and ASP - great for developers wanting to integrate the content in applications. I had read on another forum a few weeks ago that Myspace does not allow flash to link- the code gets changed to [allowNetworking="internal"] every single time. I tried it myself, and although the RSS and Scoreboard widgets appeared on my space, I couldn't link from them at all, no matter how I altered the code. Mind you, I'm a total n00b at that stuff! I have flash 9, BTW. A quote from another site-

"MySpace restricts the behavior of Flash embeds, limiting their ability to call external links or URLs by setting allowNetworking to internal. The files can display pictures and videos, but cannot add clickable external links to their Flash files."

Apparently this is a security measure worked out between Adobe and Myspace, and it's only implementable with flash 9. I think.

Hope this sheds some light!

Seriously, this is on the top of our minds and we push this topic internally every day. We are going through evaluations with MySpace to make sure that we have put in place the proper security measures and that we'll be able to implement the technology in a way that does not adversely impact MySpace's users.
