Using the included remote, consumers can search their entire media library by multiple criteria including title, actor, date, genre or thumbnail images (from photos, album art or DVD covers). A High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port displays video resolution up to 1080p on big-screen TVs and optical digital audio output (TOSLINK) transmits full digital surround sound to the consumers’ digital audio receiver.

“More than half of US broadband users are interested in using a media center PC or media server to record and watch TV from any TV or PC, watch purchased/rented movies on any TV or PC, and listen to digital music on any stereo or PC in the home,” said Joyce Putscher, principal analyst for home networking/digital home research at In-Stat. “HDMI is the leading HD digital interface in the consumer electronics market, and devices such as the NETGEAR Digital Entertainer HD are poised to reap the benefits as consumer media collections grow, demand rises for HD programming, and more users desire to stream their content throughout the home.”

Tags: video, tv, netgear, technology, streaming, torrent, internet

<clipSource>http://www.netgear.com/About/PressReleases/en-US/2007/20070107b.aspx</clipSource>

Google OS?

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: www.readwriteweb.com

Did the above image shock you?
No, this is not a real Google advert! But something similar may well turn into reality.
In this sequel to our original GoogleOS blockbuster, we try to clarify our thoughts on what GoogleOS will look like. You'll have to read to the end for the exciting conclusion, but we can hint that Linux creator Linus Torvalds has a starring role to play. Please note
that these are not insider rumors, but just some educated guesses ;-)

In our first article we examined 3 GoogleOS scenarios:

It could be a WebOS (a.k.a. virtual desktop), like YouOS

It could be a full-featured Linux distribution, like Ubuntu

It could be a (optionally BIOS based) portable mini Linux distro, with the
sole purpose of establishing an internet connection and then firing up Firefox as default
browser.

However our conclusion is that the most feasible one is the 3rd scenario -
a mini Linux distro, that users can very easily install and essentially makes
Google/Firefox the default Internet services. Now let's get into some detail about that
option...

1) Purpose: Cut the Middleman – Windows

2) Strategy: Spread it via internet ads

3) The Name

4) Acquisition? No...

5) Disruptive Offering

Tags: google, os, linux, windows, vista, competition, linus, internet, web2.0, desktop

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/googleos_linus_torvalds.php</clipSource>

Wii + Opera = "Internet Channel" on your TV

clipped by: adamc
clipper's remarks: With the PS3 severely overpriced and seemingly tanking, Nintendo really has a chance to do something special with the Wii.
Praia, Cape Verde, 15 May - Cape Verde Telecom is concluding technical preparations to launch a “triple play” (television, broadband Internet and telephone) service by the end of the year, said Nuno Leite, a company director.

Speaking to Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress, Leite said that, initially the service would be sold on the islands of Santiago, Sal and Sao Vicente, with a target of 6,000 customers.

Within two years, Leite said, the entire Cape Verde archipelago would have coverage.

“At the moment we are at a stage of setting up equipment. We are going to do everything we can for the base to be set up and ready for the project launch by the end of the year,” Leite said.

The archipelago currently has only one public television channel, Televisão Nacional de Cabo Verde (TCV), along with a private channel currently in testing (TIVER), and the Portuguese channel RTP África and France’s CFI.

According to Leite, the operator’s cable television service will give priority to Portuguese, Brazilian and themed channels, in areas such as music, cinema, sport and children’s programming.

The investment made by Cape Verde Telecom in developing its cable network so far totalled US$3.52 million, Leite said.

The new phases of financial and technical investment, he said, would be set out according to “the demand for cable television services, in order to ensure a return and cover the whole country.”

CV Telecom is currently owned by Portugal Telecom, with 40 percent, INPS -Instituto Nacional de Previdencia Social, with 27.9 percent, ASA – Empresa de Aeroportos e Segurança Aérea, with 10 percent, Cape Verdean private investors (13.7 percent), as well as the State, which ahs a 3.4 percent stake and company workers, with 5 percent.
