The Hassle: I'm trying to resist moving to Vista. How can I make XP perform like the new Windows OS?

The Fix(es): You can be a holdout (like me) and use a few XP-based freebies that do a surprisingly good job of emulating some of Vista's fancy graphical features. The first three apps listed below are my favorites. You can find all of the free tools and more online at "Add Vista Features to XP."

Copernic Desktop Search: Vista's search is fast and smart--and so is Copernic's, with keyword, file content, Boolean, and wildcard searches. If you don't like the look and feel of Copernic, Google Desktop makes a good substitute.

Desktop Sidebar: Vista has a handy Windows sidebar with calendars, calculators, a quick link to your media player, and RSS feeds. Desktop Sidebar offers similar features, with zillions of add-ons, including a file browser, a weather summary, news updates, and an e-mail checker. Too complicated for you? Then try the simpler LaunchBar Commander, which lets you create multiple on-screen panels (called docks) for launching various applications and documents.

Vista Start Menu SE: This utility creates a fair imitation of Vista's Start menu, but adds functions that Vista lacks--built-in shortcut keys to frequently used Windows functions such as Reboot, Switch Users, and Hibernate. Another great alternative for organizing apps and files is JetStart Free; it's faster than Vista Start Menu SE, but less fancy. (Choose just one of these tools.)

Folder Marker: Customize your folder icons and icon backgrounds with Vista icons. Folder Marker is a snap to use, and you can visit Horizon Software to download a bunch of Vista icons. (Choose icons of the Ico file type.)

Tonights application let's you subscribe to RSS feeds and hear them via text-to-speech spoken over your speakers. After loading the application it will reside in your systray as a large red "T". Double click to open the options.

This application is again best for HOT feeds - that is, feeds you want to see (hear) immediately, then never again. I haven't written a good COLD feed reader yet. For my description about hot and cold feeds, see my earlier post on RSS/Information Delivery and my day 5 app - RSS Alerter.

You have the option to set the times it is active (can be used as an alarm clock in this case), set the poll rate, and then give it feeds to subscribe to. Seperate each feed on a new line. It will mark all items as "read" the first time hitting the feed, and then speak any subsequent items.

As it speaks, and for a bit after, you can right click the systray icon and choose "Last Item Details" to have the webpage for the last item read opened up for you. This is a GREAT application for my home machine in the evening where I don't mind the sound.

The voice used for reading is adjustable in your control panel under speech. This varies by OS version - I'd love to hear some feedback on what voices you have. Windows Vista B2 only has one voice. My XP SP2 Machine has 3 voices. You can also adjust the speed of the voice in this control panel.

REMEMBER - don't expect immediate speaking when you start this app. Enter some feeds, then give those feeds time to have new items! It does NOT speak old items. Some of my favorite feeds (10-30 minute additions):

Nofitti e.V. - antidemokratisch?

Der Verein NOFITTI wurde im Mai 1994 gegründet, wobei man direkt zu erkennen gab, daß man von der Materie eigentlich gar nichts versteht: Schon der als witziges Wortspiel gemeinte Name selbst enthält einen Schreibfehler. "Graffiti" wird mit doppel F und einem T geschrieben.

In dem Anti-Graffiti-Verein engagieren sich rund 50 Mitglieder unterschiedlicher Alters- und Berufsschichten, vor allem aber die Lobbyisten der Reinigungsfirmen, die an Graffiti jedes Jahr gutes Geld verdienen und denen wichtig ist, Graffiti soweit zu verunglimpfen, bis auch der letzte Bürger erschreckt zum "Vandal-Ex" zu überteuerten Preisen greift.

Heissa, da klingelt die Kasse schön!

Vor allen der Präsident des Vereins, Herr Karl Hennig (Foto), lässt gerne mal paar markige Sprüche fallen und zeigt ganz deutlich seine eigentliche Ideologie.
