Cabo Verde Telecom is cheating their customers on a large scale

[Praia, 05.10.2007] The CV Telcom, the telephone company with a Monopole position in Cape Verde is cheating their clients on a large scale.

The method is explained easily: In Cape Verde, the CVT sells to approximately 5000 clients a DSL 1024 connection but in reality only a connection of approx. 200-250 KB is delivered. This practice gives the Telecom an approx. 4-5 times higher increase of income per client.

We've been trying to get a statement from the Telcom about this illegal method for months. Our inquiries per telephone, fax and letter have been left unanswered. Part of the time you cannot reach anyone there for weeks, if you finally reach someone from the service personell then the usual answer is "with the connection everything is fine" and "there are no problems", but "we can send a Technician by".

New observatory is opened to monitor interactions between the atmosphere and the tropical oceans

A new observatory to measure links between climate change and ocean-atmosphere interactions in the tropics is to be opened today, 9 January 2007.

The international observatory, located on the Cape Verde island of São Vicente in the tropical east Atlantic Ocean, began its working life in October 2006 and has already produced three months of atmospheric data. It is formally opened today by Madalena Brito Neves, the Cape Verdean Minister of Environment and Agriculture.

The new observatory will monitor and measure changes in the chemical, biological and physical composition of the tropical ocean and the air immediately above it, the marine boundary layer. Very few scientific studies have been carried out in this region - we know more about what is happening at the poles than in the tropics - so the observatory will help to fill a knowledge gap.

Increased levels of methane, nitrous oxide and halocarbons together contribute nearly as much to global warming as carbon dioxide. But these gases survive for a much shorter time in the atmosphere and we need to know their removal rates as well as their concentration and production rates.

Tropical oceans cover about a third of the Earth's surface and the air immediately above them contains very high levels of the main atmospheric oxidant - the hydroxyl radical. These radicals act as a cleaning agent, breaking down greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. About 75% of methane removal is thought to occur in the tropics.

NASA MODIS Image of the Day: January 5, 2007 - Saharan Dust over Cape Verde Islands

Yesterday's image showed a Saharan dust storm off the coast of West Africa on January 1, 2007. At the very bottom left of the image, one small island is just visible. Today's image takes a better look at the chain that island belongs to, the Cape Verde Islands. The Cape Verde islands are in the mid-Atlantic, roughly off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal. Today's image was acquired by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on January 1, 2007 - the same day yesterday's image was captured.

Dust from Saharan storms is often caught up by the trade winds over the Ocean - here we can see the winds have brought the dust approximately 300 miles from the coast to these islands. Note the von Karmann vorticles forming off of the northernmost island. This island's highest point is is causing the wind-blown dust that encounters it to flow around it in swirls and eddies. Cape Verde Telecom to offer TV and broadband Internet by end of 2006 [ 2006-05-15 ]

Praia, Cape Verde, 15 May - Cape Verde Telecom is concluding technical preparations to launch a “triple play” (television, broadband Internet and telephone) service by the end of the year, said Nuno Leite, a company director.

Speaking to Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress, Leite said that, initially the service would be sold on the islands of Santiago, Sal and Sao Vicente, with a target of 6,000 customers.

Within two years, Leite said, the entire Cape Verde archipelago would have coverage.

“At the moment we are at a stage of setting up equipment. We are going to do everything we can for the base to be set up and ready for the project launch by the end of the year,” Leite said.

The archipelago currently has only one public television channel, Televisão Nacional de Cabo Verde (TCV), along with a private channel currently in testing (TIVER), and the Portuguese channel RTP África and France’s CFI.

According to Leite, the operator’s cable television service will give priority to Portuguese, Brazilian and themed channels, in areas such as music, cinema, sport and children’s programming.

The investment made by Cape Verde Telecom in developing its cable network so far totalled US$3.52 million, Leite said.

The new phases of financial and technical investment, he said, would be set out according to “the demand for cable television services, in order to ensure a return and cover the whole country.”

CV Telecom is currently owned by Portugal Telecom, with 40 percent, INPS -Instituto Nacional de Previdencia Social, with 27.9 percent, ASA – Empresa de Aeroportos e Segurança Aérea, with 10 percent, Cape Verdean private investors (13.7 percent), as well as the State, which ahs a 3.4 percent stake and company workers, with 5 percent.
