Apart from the obligatory Gothic cathedral, there is not much to see here except for a tiny storefront museum called the Mundaneum, tucked down a narrow street in the northeast corner of town. It feels like a fittingly secluded home for the legacy of one of technology’s lost pioneers: Paul Otlet.

In 1934, Otlet sketched out plans for a global network of computers (or “electric telescopes,” as he called them) that would allow people to search and browse through millions of interlinked documents, images, audio and video files. He described how people would use the devices to send messages to one another, share files and even congregate in online social networks. He called the whole thing a “réseau,” which might be translated as “network” — or arguably, “web.”

Tags: www, web, history social web, media

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/17/science/17mund.html?_r=3&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin</clipSource>

More Photoshop Disasters (I love that site)

clipped by: n2sooners

Clip Source: photoshopdisasters.blogspot.com

They watch less television, says author Clay Shirky in a fantastic, brief talk at the recent Web 2.0 conference. Shirky makes a compelling case that people are just learning how to deal with the "cognitive surplus" of free time modern life affords us. We're waking up from the "collective bender" of mindlessly watching sitcoms and instead, we're choosing instead to spend our free time volunteering, interacting, and Web 2.0'ing online. Hit the play button to watch Shirky make his case for the full effect, or hit the link below to read the text transcript of his talk. Next time your TV-watching friends make fun of you for opting to blog instead, point 'em to this talk.

Tags: television, internet, social surplus

<clipSource>http://www.lifehacker.com.au/#</clipSource>

Make vintage photos out of your new photos. The bleach bypass, or “bleach skip” technique involves the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching stage during the processing of a colour film. This prevents the silver from being removed from the negative, and the result is a contrasty image with muted colours. The technique is often used extensively in motion pictures, such as “Saving Private Ryan” and “Three Kings”.

Tags: free, photoshop, plugins, -, a, badass, list, with, many, gems

<clipSource>http://technotarget.com/free-photoshop-plugins/</clipSource>

Was steht zur Diskussion im Tourismus?

clipped by: luigifogo

Clip Source: www.fairunterwegs.org
