The Web Time Forgot

MONS, Belgium — On a fog-drizzled Monday afternoon, this fading medieval city feels like a forgotten place. Apart from the obligatory Gothic cathedral, there is not much to see here except for a tiny storefront museum called the Mundaneum, tucked down a narrow street in the northeast corner of town. It feels like a fittingly secluded home for the legacy of one of technology’s lost pioneers: Paul Otlet.

In 1934, Otlet sketched out plans for a global network of computers (or “electric telescopes,” as he called them) that would allow people to search and browse through millions of interlinked documents, images, audio and video files. He described how people would use the devices to send messages to one another, share files and even congregate in online social networks. He called the whole thing a “réseau,” which might be translated as “network” — or arguably, “web.”

HowTo: Free and Huge custom poster for your wall

Here, I want to quickly illustrate how to create, huge(up to 20 meters), awesome looking, rasterized wall posters using previously mentioned Rasterbator. It’s free and easy to use piece of software and the whole procedure won’t take you more then 5-10 min(not incl. poster printing and putting it on your wall). Enjoy!

Steps:

1. Get Rasterbator: You can either download it from here or use its web version. Although, keep in mind that online version puts some restrictions on output size and resolution

2. Run rasterbator and select source image

3. Select paper size and alignment: The rasterbated image will be automatically split onto several pages, so you need specify the format of each unit paper(A4, A3 etc) and its alignment(horizontal or vertical). If you plan to print poster yourself then make sure to select paper format supported by your printer(ex; A4)

4. Define output size: Output size is defined by the amount of papers to be used for image width or height. For instance, you can tell rasterbator to produce a poster with a width equivalent to 12 horizontally-aligned A4 papers(see poster below).

5. Set rasterbation options: Specify color and resolution settings

6. Select output directory and press Press ‘Rasterbate!’

7. Done: Print it and put it on your wall

BleachBypass is a Photoshop-compatible plug-in designed to digitally simulate the traditional “bleach bypass” technique, producing pleasing film-like results. The bleach bypass, or “bleach skip” technique involves the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching stage during the processing of a colour film. This prevents the silver from being removed from the negative, and the result is a contrasty image with muted colours. The technique is often used extensively in motion pictures, such as “Saving Private Ryan” and “Three Kings”.

Beim Anflug auf Fogo sticht der riesige Vulkankrater der Insel sofort Auge. Die Erde scheint unbewohnbar, doch der erste Eindruck täuscht, denn die Insel hat neben Lavalandschaften sogar eine grüne, nahezu tropische Seite, wo Kaffee und Zuckerrohr gedeihen.

Nimmt man die Fläche des Burgenlandes, zerteilt sie in 15 ungleiche Teile, verstreut die Bevölkerungszahl Wuppertals auf neun dieser Teile und beamt das ganze 450 Kilometer vor die Küste Senegals, dann hat man eine erste Vorstellung von Kap Verde. 1456 von Seefahrern »entdeckt«, war der Archipel lange Zeit Umschlagplatz für Sklaven. 1975 wurde das Land von Portugal in die Unabhängigkeit entlassen. Der Mangel an Bodenschätzen und eine seit Jahren anhaltende Trockenheit behindern die Entwicklung erheblich. Fast zwei Drittel der auf Kap Verde geborenen Menschen leben als Emigranten im Ausland, weil das Land sie nicht ernähren kann. Trotz aller Widrigkeiten wollen die Kapverdianer ihre Zukunft selbst gestalten.

clipper's remarks: Is there not a newer and softer form of colonialism, that of international aid? Not that aid to foreign countries is a bad thing, but it is when we treat entire nations as if they were children incapable of learning to take care of themselves. Our snide paternalism and unchecked egotism have ensured that almost all our efforts to help the developing world have instead only hurt them.

It seems that every time somebody does something for Africa, or the rest of the developing world, they are really just doing it for themselves. Which is why at the end of the day, the movie stars and millionaires get what they were looking for and go home, while Africa suffers on.

They are given Money from the World Bank, Threatened, and then introduced to an arms dealer. Just look at who are the biggest arms dealers are and the way selling to both sides is business. If they keep the locals wiping themselves out, there is a fortune in gems minerals and stones, that will need protecting. Sorry, most of that belongs to De Beers

About $18 billion a year has been drained from Africa by nearly two dozen wars in recent decades, a new report states, a price some officials say could've helped solve the AIDS crisis and created stronger economies in the world's poorest region.

"This is money Africa can ill afford to lose," Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf wrote in an introduction to the report by the British charity Oxfam and two groups that seek tougher controls on small arms, Saferworld and the International Action Network on Small Arms.

"The sums are appalling: the price that Africa is paying could cover the cost of solving the HIV and AIDS crisis

or provide education, water and prevention and treatment for tuberculosis and malaria," Sirleaf added. "Literally thousands of hospitals, schools, and roads could have been built."

That war makes economies suffer is nothing new, but few have tried to estimate the real cost across Africa.
