Kodak and the software maker Mozilla have released the Firefox Companion for Kodak EasyShare Gallery, a photo-uploading plug-in for Mozilla's Firefox Web browser. The Companion provides drag-and-drop photo uploading from a computer folder or Web site to albums on the Kodak EasyShare Gallery site, as well as to albums on Flickr, Tabblo, Marela, 23, and Smugmug. It also provides tools for adding captions and tags to photos, and for creating new albums.

The Firefox Companion is available now as a free download from the Mozilla Firefox Web site.

Get Vista upgrade, never pay full price

Many people are upset by the fact that the economical, "upgrade" version of Vista won't accept a Windows XP or Windows 2000 CD-ROM as proof of ownership. Vista Upgrade is said to install only to a hard disk that already has XP or 2000 on it.

But I've tested a method that allows you to clean-install the Vista upgrade version on any hard drive, with no prior XP or W2K installation — or even a CD — required.

The secret is that the setup program in Vista's upgrade version will accept an installed copy of XP, W2K, or an unactivated copy of Vista itself as evidence of a previous installation.

This enables you to "clean install" an upgrade version of Vista to any formatted or unformatted hard drive, which is usually the preferred method when installing any new operating system. You must, in essence, install Vista twice to take advantage of this trick. But Vista installs much faster than XP, so it's quicker than installing XP followed by Vista to get the upgrade price.

Why does Vista's secret setup exist?

It's reasonable for us to ask ourselves whether buying an upgrade version of Vista, and then installing it to an empty hard disk that contains no previous version of Windows, is ethical.

I believe it is. Microsoft itself created the upgrade process. The company designed Vista to support upgrading it over a previously installed copy of XP, W2K Pro, or Vista itself. This isn't a black-hat hacker exploit. It's something that's been deliberately programmed into the approved setup routine.

Gizmo Call is a nice step forward in VoIP, because users don’t need to download a big client and run a traditional installer. They don’t even need to setup an account. After the Flash plugin is installed, users can immediately make calls - albeit limited to 5 free minutes of calling per day “to just about any phone number”. They can get 10 minutes free calling if they register with an email address and can also buy Call Out minutes. Besides PSTN phones, Gizmo Call users can call for free Google Talk users, Windows Live users, Gizmo Project users and any SIP address/device. There’s also a feature enabling users to customize their CallerID, so when they make a web call it can appear to come from their mobile or office phone. Plus, being a browser-based service, users can integrate Gizmo Call into their blogs and social network pages.

You do need to download a 1MB Flash plugin for Gizmo Call to work, so it’s not a download-free browser app. However it’s a once-only install and it lowers the bar for consumers wanting to start using VoIP.

Readwriteweb reports: VoIP company SIPphone is at DEMO today, where it is launching Gizmo Call - an online service that makes VoIP phone calls possible from any web browser. It works via a Flash plugin, which enables users to make calls simply by typing a phone number into a text-field in a browser. Users can also use URLs like http://gizmocall.com/18005551212 (that link is an example only and will not work). Gizmo Call is separate from SIPphone’s other app, The Gizmo Project, which is a download VoIP app like Skype.

Sidebar allows you to access mini-applications called Gadgets. Sidebar is similar to Konfabulator or Macintosh OS X's Dashboard, which call their mini-applications Widgets.

Meeting Space is a teleconferencing program for small groups of Vista users.

Speech Recognition lets users control their computers and create documents using their voices. Vista has a speech-activated user interface as well as a general voice dictation application.

Windows Mail replaces Outlook Express for home users and includes anti-phishing tools.

Windows Calendar, also for home users, is an interactive calendar application. In addition to allowing users to keep track of appointments, it can be used to send e-mail invitations to events.

SuperFetch pre-loads frequently-used applications into the memory so they can start up faster.

ReadyBoost lets people add RAM to their system with a USB thumb drive.

Sleep lets you quickly resume working by storing files that are currently in use. On desktop computers, these files are saved in the computer's RAM and on the hard drive. On laptop computers, the files are saved to the hard drive only when the battery power wanes.

Social Music Overview

FineTune

Finetune is a relatively new application written in Flash. It’s my favorite out of the bunch and I covered it on my ZDNet blog. What makes Finetune stand out is that in addition to the standard “artist radio”, it allows users to build playlists of specific songs. The minimum playlist is 45 songs and you can have up to three songs per artist. With custom playlists, you can make sure you’re only listening to songs you want. Finetune also gets points because in addition to the web version, it runs on the Wii and there is an Apollo-based desktop client.

Pandora

Pandora is the granddaddy of the bunch and it’s one of the Web 2.0 applications that Mike can’t live without. It is built using OpenLaszlo and provides the cleanest experience out of all the applications on the list. Pandora uses the Music Genome Project to generate a stream of songs that you’ll like based on how you rate previous tracks. You create stations around artists, songs or albums and you can provide feedback (thumbs up or thumbs down) on the songs Pandora chooses. Tech Crunch’s coverage of Pandora is here.

Last.Fm

last.fm is another Web 2.0 veteran and is more socially-slanted than the others. Tagging is a big part of the last.fm experience and you can tag any song that comes along in addition to being able to listen to “user tag radio” which is based on tracks that users have tagged with a specific genera. last.fm has a separate desktop application that “scrobbles” the songs you listen to and generates a music profile that you can share with friends. MOG

MOG is all about a music community. It’s very blog-centric and revolves around user pages, or “Mogs”. You build your Mog around songs you’re listening too and artists you like. That builds something like a profile for you that users can browse to and comment on. It also uses this profile to suggest other people or music that you might like.
