Eric Hanson had evidence introduced by prosecutors in his murder trial was used to pinpoint his location on the morning of the crime. Score one for the prosecutors on this front.

I suspect we will begin to see more of this sooner rather than later. GPS chips are installed on all new cell phones now. My new phone I recently picked up has builtin GPS navigation software which is brilliant, but knowing that the boys at the NSA's Fort Meade, MD SIGINT farm can pinpoint my location anytime they want is kind of scary.

Clip Source: indianalawblog.com

Law - "Police Using G.P.S. Some quotes:

Like millions of motorists, Eric Hanson used a Global Positioning System device in his Chevrolet TrailBlazer to find his way around. He probably did not expect that prosecutors would use it, too — to help convict him of killing four family members.

Prosecutors in suburban Chicago analyzed data from the Garmin G.P.S. device to pinpoint where Mr. Hanson had been on the morning after his parents were fatally shot and his sister and brother-in-law bludgeoned to death in 2005. He was convicted of the killings this year and sentenced to death.

Mr. Hanson’s trial was among recent criminal cases in which the authorities used such navigation devices to help establish a defendant’s whereabouts. Experts say such evidence will almost certainly become more common in court as the systems become more affordable and show up in more vehicles. * * *

Tags: gps, garmin, eric hanson, law

<clipSource>http://indianalawblog.com/archives/2008/08/law_police_usin.html</clipSource>

Massive police raids on suspected protestors in Minneapolis

clipped by: finifinito
clipper's remarks: The hammer is coming down in Minneapolis in advance of the Republican National Convention. Unlike Denver which saw no protests to speak of, RNCC is expecting trouble.

My friend Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald are covering activities by the various local and federal police agencies working in concert together to disrupt the protestors in advance of the convention.

Clip Source: www.salon.com

Massive police raids on suspected protestors in Minneapolis

Protesters here in Minneapolis have been targeted by a series of highly intimidating, sweeping police raids across the city, involving teams of 25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets. Last night, members of the St. Paul police department and the Ramsey County sheriff's department handcuffed, photographed and detained dozens of people meeting at a public venue to plan a demonstration, charging them with no crime other than "fire code violations," and early this morning, the Sheriff's department sent teams of officers into at least four Minneapolis area homes where suspected protesters were staying.

UPDATE: Here is the first of the videos, from the house that had just been raided:

Tags: police state america, protests, rncc, 2008, minneapolis

<clipSource>http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/30/police_raids/index.html</clipSource>

Feds, Indy Reach Deal To End Diversity Oversight

clipped by: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, hoping to unite the Democratic Party and cement her future in it, will gather her hard-won primary delegates Wednesday at a reception where she is expected to formally release them to Barack Obama.

In this Thursday, June 28, 2007, file photo, Democratic Presidential hopeful Sen. The New York senator has invited her pledged delegates to a reception at the Colorado Convention Center, not far from the main Democratic National Convention arena.

The high-profile gathering of political regulars who once fought against Obama serves a dual purpose for Clinton: Show fellow Democrats that she can be a team player, and display her still-formidable political strengths for the future. More of us can get behind that bandwagon, which is only about 75 years overdue.

Our "blue laws" regulating Sunday sales in the U.S. are quite a history lesson, stretching back to the Puritans and long before. Historically, some European countries refused to allow any commerce on Sundays. That was God's day, and you couldn't sell a pot or swallow a brew. Naturally the Puritans brought this part of the Old Country with them.

Indiana has its identity strongly tied up in this crusade. During the 1920s, 90 of our 92 counties had active members of the Ku Klux Klan -- and the KKK, lo and behold, was heavily aligned with the Prohibition party, if not synonymous. Hence getting rid of booze was a No. 1 Klan goal.

Tags: sunday beer, blue laws

<clipSource>http://ruthholladay.com/index.php?blog=1&title=ringing_in_sunday_booze_sales&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1</clipSource>

Layofff notices going out today at Star

clipped by: finifinito
clipper's remarks: Ruth Holladay spent many years working for the Indianapolis Star and was/is one of my favorite writers from Indy.
The process of notifying 23 people at the Star of layoffs has begun.

Employees are being notified directly; the Guild is not getting a hit list.

However, the secretive process raises concerns for the Guild that Gannett is not honoring seniority. Are older workers being picked off in greater numbers than younger ones?

Talking to Human Resources at the paper is like talking to a voice mail message, said one staffer. There is no real conversation. So right now, it's a lot of worry/wait, wait/worry.

What a lousy way to run a business. Especially a communications one...

What surprised me was the knife had a picture of a KKK member on it. Lucious told me in so many words the best way to deal with your enemies is to show them love and compassion and eventually they come around.

Tags: luciious newsome, community activists

<clipSource>http://rtv6blogs.com/rtv6_capitol/2008/08/19/lucious-newsom-rip/</clipSource>

Pence: Pelosi Gets the Drilling Message

clipped by: finifinito
clipper's remarks: Mike Pence tends to gloat a lot and especially when bloviating in front of cameras.
