People with bipolar disorder have disturbances in the areas of the brain that control mood, but researchers are unsure if that is a cause or a result of the disease.

Clip Source: www.everydayhealth.com

Causes of Bipolar Disorder

Like many other mental illnesses, bipolar disorder tends to run in families. People with this condition often have first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, or children) with the same diagnosis

findings thus far suggest that multiple genes play a role in bipolar disorder.

But even as they hunt for genetic culprits, researchers agree that genes don't tell the whole story

(studies in identical twins have found a 60 to 80 percent chance of both being bipolar), a finding that suggests that environmental stressors may be among bipolar-disorder causes.

One line of thinking is that people are predisposed because of their genetic picture and something happens in their lives that triggers the genes to turn on

Stressors could include things like a significant personal loss, an abusive home life, substance abuse, or sleep disturbances

Being the leader renders one a “winner”–she is strong and outspoken; she understands her potency. She is the one who gets us invited to parties and makes the decisions for herself and for her friends.

2. She is useful when any friend, in any category, is in a bad way–the doormat absorbs her sorrows willingly. The doormat yearns to belong to a group, and also seeks out intimate friendships. To this end, she isn’t critical and won’t give you a hard time.

3. It is the most common type of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease.

In the case-control study, published in the online issue of Neurology®, researchers examined 173 people in Scotland who took a test of their mental ability in 1932 when they were about 11 years old and later developed dementia.

This group was compared to one set of control participants of the same age and gender. For another group of controls, the researchers made sure that the cases and controls came from families where the fathers had similar types of occupations.

The people with vascular dementia were 40 percent more likely to have low test scores when they were children than the people who did not develop dementia. Now, a Swedish researcher suggests this characteristic is also associated with having an elevated risk of dementia after age 70.

The research is based on the Prospective Population Study of Women in Gothenburg, which was started at the end of the 1960s when almost 1,500 women between the ages of 38 and 60 underwent comprehensive examinations and answered questions about their health and lifestyle.

A follow-up 32 years later showed that 161 women had developed dementia, with the average age of diagnosis being 75. This study shows that women who were broader around the waist than the hips in middle age ran slightly more than twice the risk of developing dementia when they got old. However, the researchers could find no link to a high body mass index (BMI).

Tags: dementia, fat, weight, abdominal fat, belly fat, research, science, epidemiology

<clipSource>http://psychcentral.com/news/2009/11/24/abdominal-fat-linked-to-dementia/9759.html</clipSource>

10 best funeral songs

clipped by: foxyarse
clipper's remarks: 04 "Angels" Robbie Williams
03 "Time To Say Goodbye" Sarah Brightman/Andrea Bocelli
02 "Wind Beneath My Wings" Bette Midler/Celine Dion

What about..."Drop kick me Jesus through the goalposts of life"
or
"She got the mine...I got the shaft"?
01 "My Way" Frank Sinatra/Shirley Bassey

Clip Source: new.uk.music.yahoo.com

His comments back the view of Church of England vicar, Father Ed Tomlinson, who said last week he felt "like a lemon" whenever services concluded with a song from the likes of Tina Turner or Sinatra. "We have changed to a culture that I find incredibly hard to accept", said Strickland, adding, tellingly: "I am 68, have been a priest for 44 years, and do not want to change". Well, the words horse and bolted spring to mind, given the clear upsurge in demand. A recent survey of 30,000 services showed 58 per cent of people in England and Wales chose pop music above any other, resulting in the following Top 10 most-played:

10 "Unforgettable" Nat King Cole
09 "You'll Never Walk Alone" Gerry & How a simple scientific questionnaire can change your life!

Sometimes we may have a feeling that our life isn't quite where we would like it to be. However, we might not be able to pinpoint the source of our dissatisfaction. All we know is that our level of 'happiness' and enjoyment of life isn't quite right.

A good way to pinpoint this dissatisfaction so we can begin to effectively deal with it is to create a Life Ratings Scale.

Put simply, a Life Ratings Scale requires you to create a list of all areas in your life that you consider important to having a life of quality and enjoyment. Next using a likert-type scale from 0 to 5, with 0 as extremely unsatisfied and 5 being very satisfied, you rate each of the categories.

By using this technique you can gain a very clear picture of where your areas of dissatisfaction lay. Then you can begin to come up with ways to address them.

A sample Life Ratings Scale can be:

Family Life 0 1 2 3 4 5

Health 0 1 2 3 4 5

Finance 0 1 2 3 4 5

Tags: life, satisfaction, perception, happiness, science, rating, psychology

<clipSource>http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/communication-central/200909/how-simple-scientific-questionnaire-can-change-your-life</clipSource>

10 Top Homemade Facial masks...Read On...

clipped by: fewstingscorpio
clipper's remarks: This is great. Of Jock Straps and Conspiracy Theories

That's from an essay titled "Baseball Magic" by the anthropologist George Gmelch. As I explained in my article on magical thinking, feeling powerless increases superstition. Brains are pattern-finding organs, and when tossed into an unpredictable environment people will grasp for any straw they can get (maybe if I do A, B will happen.) As Gmelch pointed out, batting and pitching are the most fertile activities for superstition in baseball; the factors differentiating a home run from a foul ball are so hard to master that players irrationally look for other ways to control the situation. And according to a paper in tomorrow's edition of Science, skittery jocks may also be more likely to see faces in clouds, construct conspiracy theories, and make biased investment decisions.

The paper

ties together leads from several areas of research into a tight argument

lacking control increases illusory pattern perception

Tags: psychology, conspiracy, theories, cognition, happiness, perception

<clipSource>http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/brainstorm/200810/jock-straps-and-conspiracy-theories</clipSource>

Everybody Loves A Bully

clipped by: fewstingscorpio
clipper's remarks: http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/200404/everyone-loves-bully

Clip Source: www.psychologytoday.com

What's the secret?

Just how do you grill the perfect steak. You start out with a good cut of meat and a hot, hot grill. From there you need to pay attention and learn the secrets of "doneness".

Answer: The secret to a juicy steak is something people have been arguing about since the early days of backyard grills. Some people will tell you to sear the meat at high temperatures on both sides, then turn down the heat and let it finish cooking. Others will say that searing has no real effect. I've tried it both ways and don't necessarily think that high temperature fast searing does much. The real secret to a juicy steak is to get it cooked fast and to get it off the grill the second it's done. Letting a steak sit on a grill too long whether it's cooked through or not will dry out the meat.

Grilling:

Get your grill good and hot. The ideal temperature is one that will cook the steak to the desired doneness in the shortest amount

Tags: steaks, meat, grilling, cooking

<clipSource>http://bbq.about.com/cs/steaks/f/blfaqsteak.htm</clipSource>
