Whites Go Out Of Their Way To Avoid Talking About Race

ScienceDaily (Oct. 7, 2008) — White people – including children as young as 10 -- may avoid talking about race so as not to appear prejudiced, according to new research. But that approach often backfires as blacks tend to view this "colorblind" approach as evidence of prejudice, especially when race is clearly relevant.

In one study, 101 white undergraduate students were paired with either a white or black female partner who pretended to be another participant.

The results showed that whites' effort to appear colorblind backfired. Black observers rated whites' avoidance of asking about race as being evidence of prejudice. What's more, when the researchers showed silent video clips of whites from the study to another group of individuals, those whites who avoided asking about race were judged as less friendly, just on the basis of their nonverbal behavior.

Mary Daly, a former professor at Boston College, barred men from some of her classes at the private, Jesuit-run institution. Administrators reprimanded Daley, claiming the exclusion violated Title IX. She was forced to retire in 1999 after two male students filed a discrimination complaint against the university, but the case was settled out of court.

“It's not segregation; it is a different instructional approach,” Reno said. “If it can benefit women and there is an interest, we will do the same thing for them.”

College class for men only is raising legal questions

Higher education looks to a 1996 Supreme Court ruling that Virginia Military Institute, a men's military college, could exclude women as long as it provided an institution of equal caliber for women.

Any prejudice homosexual music lecturer Johan Strydom may have suffered after the NG Kerk, in Moreleta Park, dispensed with his services, was due to his own publicity seeking, counsel for the church told the Pretoria High Court in South Africa on Wednesday. Judge Dion Basson reserved judgement after hearing final arguments in Strydom's R200 000 damages claim against the church for his loss of income and dignity after being sacked from his post in the church's music academy for being a practising homosexual. Strydom has also demanded an unreserved apology from the church. Strydom's senior advocate Ronel Tolmay argued that the church had infringed his constitutionally protected right to equality, dignity, privacy and freedom to work in the profession of his choice.

June 10, 2008 (Computerworld) BOSTON -- At the request of its SharePoint and Office product development teams, Microsoft Corp.'s Office Labs operation has created and is testing a prototype of an internal social network that can provide employees with feeds and updates about their colleagues.

Chris Pratley, general manager of Office Labs, is slated to disclose details of the prototype - called TownSquare - Thursday at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston. He spoke to Computerworld today about the project, which was launched in January and has already been used by about 8,000 Microsoft employees.

Couples are likely to lose such lawsuits, creating precedents that will take a long time to overturn, and in the process may alienate people the movement needs to win over, the groups said.

My studio is in the Woman's Building downtown.

Last night I went to the Getty Center to see "Without Imagination There Is No Will: The Woman's Building Tapes" curated by Meg Cranston. The audience was full of all the pioneers of Feminism in Los Angeles, Suzanne Lacy, Jerri Allyn, Susan Mogul. It was exciting to be in the presence of the matriarch. I wanted to tell them that the Woman's building lives on and that their legacy endures, but I chickened out.

California Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that same-sex marriage is legal, on the basis of a strict-scrutiny analysis of the Constitution. This will make it essentially impossible for California to keep any kind of anti-gay-marriage laws on its books, and could lead to other states abolishing their laws discriminating against gay marriage.

clipper's remarks: I would fight to the death to support women who do want this recognition by the state, although I don't agree. If they think this is the way to go, I refuse to be a negative impetus for them.

However, it amazes me that heterosexuals even want this form of state recognition. I query the focus on genitalia and the lack of focus on the quality of the sense of family. If you want to divide people (for your agenda) what better way than make them focus on irrelevant things.

I would marry, will marry, because my partner wants to. I respect that. And it may even mean something different to her than it does to me. That's fine, as long as we both focus on the sense of family and community.
