15-year-old amputee shines on stage for her dancing, not her disability

It was just a tiny misstep during a dance class routine. But it was enough to cause Nathalie Calderon’s right foot to spin backward 180 degrees.

“My teacher nearly fainted,” said Nathalie.

But the determined Central Florida girl just asked for a screwdriver — and with a few twists, her foot was again righted.

Nathalie, who was born without the lower part of a tibia in her right leg, wears a prosthetic, something she hadn’t bothered to mention to her dance instructor.

Now 15, Nathalie has moved on to another instructor, Georgio Fagan of Georgio’s American Dance Centre in Lake Mary, Fla., where she’s part of the senior company. She’s won three scholarships this year for her dancing, has earned the respect of her peers and the adoration of audiences when she performs hip hop, tap and ballet.

‘I want to dance’
She did harbor a dream though.

Dog makes cell phone call to save owner's life

ORLANDO, Fla. - A 17-pound beagle named Belle is more than man’s best friend. She’s a lifesaver.

Belle was in Washington, D.C., on Monday to receive an award for biting onto owner Kevin Weaver’s cell phone to call 911 after the diabetic man had a seizure and collapsed.

“There is no doubt in my mind that I’d be dead if I didn’t have Belle,” said Weaver, 34, whose blood sugar had dropped dangerously low. Belle had been trained to summon help in just those circumstances. She had been taught to bite down on the number 9 on his cell phone contacting 911.

Belle was the first canine recipient to win the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award, given to someone who used a cell phone to save a life, prevent a crime or help in an emergency.

Huge Wildlife Migration Discovered in Africa

NEW YORK -- More than a million animals, including elephants, buffaloes, ostriches, lions, giraffes and a rare type of stork, have been unexpectedly seen living and migrating across Southern Sudan, where no surveys of wildlife had been conducted for the past 25 years due to civil war in the region.

Decades of war wrought significant damage to the region, along with excessive hunting, desertification of the land and periodic droughts, so wildlife numbers were declining in the stricken country. Based on observations in other war-torn nations, conservationists thought the wildlife in Southern Sudan would be wiped out, but it wasn't.

Officials told scientists they had seen herds of animals in the region.

To their surprise, they counted more than 1.2 million white-eared kob, tiang antelope and Mongalla gazelle. They also saw at least 8,000 elephants, it was announced today at a news conference here.

Bill Martin cooks with sunlight, several times a week.

Sweet potatoes, soft and steaming hot. Rice. Chicken. Beans. Martin prepares them in a solar oven you'll often see in the yard of his East Davis residence.

“I started about three years ago, when I was living in the Bay Area, just because I believe in minimizing energy usage,” the 45-year-old grad student said.

Saving energy may have been one of his initial goals. But after exploring the solar oven's possibilities for several years, Martin now feels that it is actually the preferred way to prepare a many of foods.

“For sweet potatoes, the solar oven is outstanding,” he said. “The heat is so even. I put them in a black pot with just a touch of water, so they cook in a little steam.” His solar oven, with the glass lid clamped in place, can easily heat up to 300 to 325 degrees, sometimes warmer.

Organic farming can yield up to three times as much food as conventional farming on the same amount of land---according to new findings which refute the long-standing assumption that organic farming methods cannot produce enough food to feed the global population.

Researchers from the University of Michigan found that in developed countries, yields were almost equal on organic and conventional farms. In developing countries, food production could double or triple using organic methods

The researchers set about compiling data from published literature to investigate the two chief objections to organic farming: low yields and lack of organically acceptable nitrogen sources.

Their findings refute those key arguments, Perfecto said, and confirm that organic farming is less environmentally harmful yet can potentially produce more than enough food
